European Championship 1996
Paul Gascoigne celebrates after scoring against Scotland and Aime Jacquet, coach of France
Hosts England produced thrilling group wins over Scotland and Holland before beating Spain in the quarter-finals on penalties to reach the last four.

The semi-final encounter with Germany came close to matching the drama of their meeting in 1990 but Germany once again had the edge in the penalty shoot-out.

France proved similarly fragile in the art of the spot-kick as Aime Jacquet's side succumbed to the Czech Republic in the semi-finals.

Rather than win the final on penalties, Germany opted for a golden goal method of victory, courtesy of Oliver Bierhoff.
