World Cup 2002
David Beckham consoles David James after England are beaten by Brazil
With Zinedine Zidane struggling for fitness, world champions France made an early exit as they failed to reach the knockout stages.

With Sven-Goran Eriksson as coach, England reached the quarter-finals and until late in the first half were ahead, thanks to a Michael Owen goal.

But Rivaldo equalised for Brazil and the eventual 2002 winners edged past England as Ronaldinho's memorable free-kick looped over England goalkeeper David Seaman.

Ronaldinho's goal has been described as "an absolute fluke" but his extraordinary effort proved the difference.
