World Cup 1986
France bow out of the 1986 World Cup semi-finals while England are beaten by Argentina in the quarter-finals
In the 1986 World Cup, France reached the semi-finals after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shoot-out win over Brazil in the last eight.

France met their 1982 nemesis and, with Michel Platini hampered by injury, Germany won 2-0, taking an early lead after French keeper Joel Bats fumbled Andreas Brehme's shot, with Rudi Voeller adding a second.

England had gone out in equally dramatic fashion in the quarter-finals after a 2-1 defeat by eventual winners Argentina.

Diego Maradona won the match with his 'Hand of God' goal and a mesmerising second when he dribbled from inside his own half.
