Red cards and penalty shoot-outs defined the 2006 World Cup for England and France.
Wayne Rooney saw red after an altercation with Ricardo Carvalho in the quarter-finals and although England held on for penalties, Portugal held their nerve to reach the last four.
Zinedine Zidane struggled in the group stages but he was back to his imperious best as he guided France to victory in the quarter-finals against Brazil.
In the final, Zidane gave his side the lead with a cheeky penalty but headbutted Marco Materazzi and Italy won the penalty shoot-out.
