| Sunday, 5 January, 2003, 13:44 GMT Shrewsbury's precious Jem ![]() Jemson (right) is calm during the celebrations Shrewsbury FA Cup hero Nigel Jemson toasted victory over Everton with a cup of tea and a night in front of the television on Saturday. While Shrewsbury's young team would have been expected to party hard following their remarkable third round victory at Gay Meadow, their much-travelled captain headed straight for home. Jemson, who scored both goals to sink Everton, was still up for the cup - but this time it was with milk and two sugars.
"I didn't get home until after eight and it was just a case of having a cup of tea with the wife and kids and trying to keep my eyes open until Match of the Day." TV highlights gave Jemson the chance to wallow in the aftermath of the Shrews' win - and provided proof that the giantkilling act was carried out entirely on merit. "Obviously we were the underdogs but at the third round there always has to be one upset and we thought maybe it could be our day," Jemson revealed. "Our pitch isn't the best and we knew Everton would find it hard to come and play their attractive football on it. "We got off to a good start, the crowd got behind us and we made it hard for them. "We passed the ball and we were a bit disappointed we didn't go in at half time more than 1-0 up."
The goals - and the victory - helped erase a recurring FA Cup nightmare for Jemson. A burgeoning prospect who joined Nottingham Forest from his home-town club Preston, the 21-year-old Jemson already had England Under-21 caps to his name when he scored a hat-trick in Forest's march to the FA Cup final, only to find himself dropped for the Wembley date with Spurs. Having scored the Wembley winner in the League Cup final against Oldham a season earlier, FA Cup heartache was hard for Jemson to stomach.
"Saturday was a fantastic day for me personally. To score two goals against Premiership teams is fantastic. "Of course it was very disappointing when I got left out of the Forest team in the '91 cup final, but that is history and you just get on with it." Jemson still harbours hopes of dancing on football's big stage at least once more and will be eagerly awaiting news of Monday's fourth roun draw. "I never lost faith in my ability and I know I have still got it - it's just a case of putting it against the best. "The 1990 win against Oldham was a magnificent achievement and a great memory, but it's that far gone now. It seems such a long time ago. "I've been fortunate and have had a lot of success over my career and long may it continue. "I look after myself and I do plenty of stretching and that has paid off. "I've still got a few years in the old legs yet." |
