| Tuesday, 27 August, 2002, 21:38 GMT 22:38 UK Darlington 2-0 Carlisle Darlington showed great patience and composure to eventually break down a resolute Carlisle rearguard to record victory, their first home win of the season. The Quakers paraded Colombian striker Faustino Asprilla before kick-off but it was substitute Glenn Naylor who stole the show with a second-half brace. The visitors almost snatched the lead in the 27th minute when captain Richie Foran set up Trevor Malloy, but his shot was screwed wide from the edge of the area. Substitute Naylor came on at the interval and in the 56th minute, after being sent clear by Ashley Nicholls, he rounded goalkeeper Peter Keen before firing into the unguarded goal. As the visitors poured forward in search of an equaliser, they were caught out in the 81st minute. Slick combination play between Ian Clark and Ryan Valentine set up Naylor for a sweet second goal which was side-footed home from 10 yards out. Darlington: Collett, Valentine, Clarke, Liddle, Betts, Hadland, Maddison, Ford, Nicholls, Clark, Conlon. Subs: Naylor, Kilty, McGurk, Porter, Alexander. Carlisle: Keen, Birch, Whitehead, Andrews, Murphy, McDonagh, McGill, Summerbell, Burns, Molloy, Foran. Subs: Wake, Kelly, Shelley, Naisbitt, Galloway. Referee: H Webb (S Yorkshire). |
