Bury 4-3 Shrewsbury

Nigel Jemson almost rescued an unlikely point for Shrewsbury with an eight-minute second-half treble, but it was not enough as Bury held on for a 4-3 victory.

Kevin Ratcliffe's side were trailing 4-0 when the 33-year-old former Bury striker began his one-man recovery act.

Jemson's third in the 73rd minute set up a frenetic finish but the Shakers, living up to their nickname, held on to claim their second home win in a row.

It had looked rosy for Andy Preece's men when a brace from Jon Newby and strikes from Pawel Abbott and Terry Dunfield - his first goal for the club - gave them a four-goal cushion after only 56 minutes.

George Clegg also missed a penalty as Shrewsbury appeared to be dead and buried.

But Bury pressed the self-destruct button and Jemson, who missed a penalty against Rushden & Diamonds on Saturday, almost salvaged the unlikeliest of draws.

Bury: Garner, Swailes, Redmond, Woodthorpe, Unsworth, Dunfield, Forrest, Clegg, Stuart, Abbott, Newby. Subs: Preece, Nelson, Billy, George, Nugent.

Shrewsbury: Dunbavin, Drysdale, Redmile, Heathcote, Thompson, Lowe, Atkins, Tolley, Woan, Rodgers, Jemson. Subs: Van Blerk, Kendall, Stevens, Moss, Murray.

Referee: J P Robinson (E Yorkshire)
