Mikel Arteta reactsImage source, Getty Images

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to TNT Sports: "Especially in this competition, we are in the position that we wanted to be. We won eight games out of eight which is so difficult to do, so credit to the boys. We close this chapter now and we can focus on other competitions."

On Kai Havertz's importance to the team: "We realised straight away how much we missed him. What he brings to the team, his creativity, what he links with people, his intuition in front of goal as well so very, very happy to have him."

On being top of the league phase: "It gives you certain privilege, to play two less games and the home advantage in the second round so we just have to wait and see now who we get in the next phase and we will prepare that with a lot of enthusiasm because it is a competition that we love."

On making 11 changes to his side: "It doesn't matter who we put, we can sustain the level. We are disappointed in the manner that we concede both goals but the reality is that the scoreboard should have been very, very different with the amount of chances and shots that we had. Close this one, well done to the boys and we move on."

  6. 'Great result and a good performance'published at 23:23 GMT 28 January

    FT: Liverpool 6-0 Qarabag

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, speaking to Uefa after reaching the last 16: "Great result and a good performance as well. It took another player. When I said yesterday or two days ago, maybe because we won the league because we went out, I meant it because we could play with the best team. We have a lot of muscle injuries. We are doing a double program with a lot of players who aren't used to that."

On Jeremie Frimpong's injury and whether it could lead to moving in the transfer market: "He will be out for a period of time. If you have a problem and have to go off like that, that usually tells you straight away. Let's wait and see what the upcoming days can bring.

"We didn't have a bad five, six or seven minutes. That's usually how we have it in the other games but we didn't have that. We were 6-0 up and they had one counter attack but I saw my players back.

"I think I've said many times that players are developing and that's also because of them. They work really hard to be able to play every three days. I took them off to give them rest ahead of Newcastle. It is development and that's what the club knew when we made many changes in the summer."

  8. 'You have to play the best and beat the best'published at 23:21 GMT 28 January

    FT: Napoli 2-3 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior, speaking to TNT Sports: "I thought the character of the players, their resilience in the second half and their reaction to going behind was so positive.

"I wanted to go aggressive in the first half - we had win back moments in their half, but the gaps were too big, so we corrected it at half-time.

"Magnificent performance from Pedro. He has given me that since I have come to the club. For the lads to come from behind and show their character makes me very happy head coach.

"I'm learning all the time about my team, about what we're capable of. I really wanted to be front-footed today. I wanted to go out and win the game.

"Jamie Gittens come on and made a huge difference. I have outstanding players. I have a group and I trust them. I told them that."

On avoiding the play-off phase: "Massive - that is huge for us to be able to be able to work with the players on the training round. I can run them and get them fitter, which is good."

On his Chelsea role: "You have to enjoy this job. We're the luckiest people in the world to do this job. Very privileged. You have to enjoy these moments, but we want more.

"You're in the Champions League, so at the end of the day you have to play against the best and beat the best. I am delighted we are through in this manner."

  11. 'A moment of history'published at 23:17 GMT 28 January

    FT: Benfica 4-2 Real Madrid

    Benfica

Benfica boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to Uefa: "Winning or losing games in the final moment, with the final play, has happened various times, but to win you need to take risks. You think it arrives but then it doesn't, so then you have to change a few things. In the end one ball [for them] could make it 3-3. And with that we would still be out. To win against Real Madrid carries importance and is significant. In that moment we had to give it everything."

On goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin's goal that helped sent them through: "We knew he could do it. In the game at the Dragao [two weeks ago],Trubin was also there in the final action and headed it but a Porto player blocked it. You have to put the ball in there. It was a spectacular goal that independent of our future in the competition, puts us into the next round, and was a moment of history against Real Madrid. It is important for a few reasons, economically important for Benfica, and even more so from a prestige point of view.

On changes made in the second half: "I did the substitution, it was 3-2 and I did not have any idea if that was enough. The players came in obviously for us to try to win. Then when it did not arrive and they ended up with a player less, I sent Nico [Otameendi] up top because we did not have any more substitutions.

"Clearly when the free-kick was given I told Trubin to go forward and told Dahl to go on the halfway line in case they won back the ball so we could try to defend. Them going from 11 men to ten, it was still important to guard the back because winning will always be the most important. But the action arrived and we made more history at the Estadio da Luz."

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to TNT Sports: "[Making the top eight] was the first target, being so tight. We had many chances to score more goals. We could not do that and in the end was in the hands for other teams. We come back and try to improve."

On what he thought of the performance: "I think the first half was much better than the second and the second had more chances than the first. The second half still we are not at our best. We continue."

On tonight's formation: "I adapt to the players. If I have wingers, a false nine, maybe I play differently."

On Jeremy Doku: "It's a big miss [once he goes off]. Jeremy is an important player for so many reasons. We'll see."

On Erling Haaland scoring: "I'm happy for him. He made a fantastic goal, fantastic, fantastic goal."

On Rayan Cherki: "For the first season being here it is extraordinary. The numbers are really good. His composure, the way he plays, I'm really pleased."

  15. 'You fancy City to win it'published at 23:09 GMT 28 January

    FT: Man City 2-0 Galatasaray

    Michael Brown
Former Manchester City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live at Etihad Stadium

On whether Manchester City have the potential to go and win the Champions League:

I think so. I think you have to look at Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo joining that squad, that's certainly going to make them stronger. No Rodri today and loads of defensive fragility because of injuries.

With Pep Guardiola, with some of these players, you've got to fancy them. You've got to see the disappointment of last season and Champions League, the draw was cruel, but now to scrape in they don't have those extra games which would've been difficult for them fighting on all fronts.

A really good night and you've got to say they should be in and around it.

It's always important to get the early goals to get the crowd on our side. We know we can do even better, but we're pleased."

    FT: Liverpool 6-0 Qarabag

    Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, speaking after their win: "We skip two (play-off) games, which is important in a long season like this one. We were too open in the first half but we were much better in the second half and got the goals.

"I think the team did a good job.

"I like getting in the box. Maybe some people will say I'm not that good when I get there. I'm still really angry with myself because it was a really good cross from Mo and it was a good chance to score the first hat-trick of my career.

"We know that in the Champions League, we've been better than the Premier League. We need to see the positives but need to think about the next one.

"We're going to have some feedback and review the game. See the positives and the negatives because that's how you improve."
