Malik Tillman scored twice as Bayer Leverkusen confirmed their place in the Champions League play-offs with a 3-0 win against Villarreal in their final league-phase outing.

Leverkusen began the day only one point above 25th-placed Napoli, but finished 16th in the 36-team table to book their place in the play-offs as a seeded team with the victory over already-eliminated Villarreal.

The hosts were gifted the opening goal just 12 minutes in when Arnau Tenas collected a back pass from Renato Veiga but hesitated on the ball, allowing Malik Tillman enough time to close down and block the Villarreal goalkeeper's attempted clearance into the net.

Leverkusen were denied by the woodwork twice in the 26th minute as Ibrahim Maza's low drive hit the right post and then ricocheted off Tenas to rattle the crossbar before the keeper could collect.

But they were not to be denied eight minutes later as Tillman grabbed his and Leverkusen's second with a fierce shot after the ball was knocked back towards the edge of the box by Patrik Schick.

The German side continued to dominate after the interval and Alejandro Grimaldo sealed the victory in the 57th minute when he arrived at the far post to volley home a cross from Lucas Vazquez.

While Leverkusen wrapped up the league phase with three wins, three draws and two defeats in eight, Villarreal finished second from bottom with only one point.
