Late goals from Federico Dimarco and Andy Diouf helped Inter Milan defeat Borussia Dortmund in their final league phase fixture but last season's runners-up still failed to secure a direct spot in the Champions League last-16.
Dimarco beat Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with a curling free-kick from 20 yards out in the 80th minute before substitute Diouf sealed the victory for the Italian side in the 94th minute.
But with Chelsea winning at Inter's Serie A rivals Napoli and Sporting defeating Athletic Club, Cristian Chivu's side dropped out of the top-eight and finished 10th, but will be seeded in next month's play-offs.
Dortmund, meanwhile, finished 17th in the 36-team table and will be unseeded in their two-legged play-off tie.
The meeting between the two former European champions on Wednesday proved to be a cagey affair, with both sides standing a chance to secure a place in the last-16.
Serhou Guirassy was presented with the first chance of the game as the Dortmund striker found himself unmarked in front of the goal following a corner but fluffed his shot straight at Yann Sommer.
Yann Bisseck then had a shot fly inches wide at the opposite end but Inter, who began their European campaign with four straight wins but then lost three on the trot, failed to find their rhythm in Germany.
Looking for an opener, Chivu turned to the bench early to introduce Francesco Pio Esposito, who had the chance to score moments after coming on only to be denied by a last-ditch tackle from Ramy Bensebaini.
But Inter finally broke the deadlock through left-back Dimarco before they secured the victory in added time as Karim Adeyemi lost possession inside his own half allowing Diouf to add a second.
