Match Facts

  • This will be the fifth meeting between Athletic Club and Sporting CP, with the most recent coming in the 2011-12 UEFA Europa League semi-finals; Marcelo Bielsa’s Athletic won 4-3 on aggregate to reach the final, which remains one of only two European finals they’ve reached in their history (also the 1977 UEFA Cup).

  • The home team has won in all four meetings between Athletic Club and Sporting CP (two wins each), with Athletic’s two victories on home soil coming in November 1985 (2-1 in the UEFA Cup) and April 2012 (3-1 in the UEFA Europa League).

  • Sporting CP have never won away to a Spanish opponent in European competition (17 games - D4 L13). Indeed, only Celtic (21) have played more away games versus Spanish sides in Europe without ever winning.

  • Athletic Club are unbeaten in their last three European matches (W1 D2) and they are now looking to qualify from the league/group phase of a UEFA Champions League campaign for the first time.

  • Sporting CP are winless in six away UEFA Champions League matches (D2 L4) since a 2-0 win over Sturm Graz in October 2024. Indeed, six of the seven games this season involving Sporting have been won by the home side – they’ve won all four home games and drawn one and lost two of their away matches.

  • After beating Atalanta last time out, Athletic Club will be aiming to win consecutive European Cup/UEFA Champions League matches for just the third time in their history – previously doing so in 1956-57 (3) and 2014-15 (2).

  • Sporting CP have won four UEFA Champions League matches in 2025-26, their joint most in a single campaign along with their four wins in 2008-09. They are looking to join Benfica (3 times) and FC Porto (9 times) among Portuguese teams with 5+ wins in a single campaign.

  • Robert Navarro has been directly involved in four goals in six UEFA Champions League appearances this season (2 goals, 2 assists); the joint-most by an Athletic Club player (also 4 for Gorka Guruzeta). Three of those goal involvements came in their 3-2 win over Atalanta last time out, scoring one and assisting two.

  • Luis Suárez has netted four UEFA Champions League goals for Sporting CP this season, with only Viktor Gyökeres scoring more in a campaign (6 in 2024-25). The only Colombians to net 5+ goals in a season are Jackson Martinez in 2014-15 for FC Porto (7) and Radamel Falcao in 2016-17 for Monaco (5).

  • Athletic Club’s Gorka Guruzeta made 59 high-intensity pressures in the opposition half in his side’s win at Atalanta last time out – only three starting strikers have made more in a UEFA Champions League match this season: Karim Adeyemi v Juventus (62), Mikel Merino v Bayern Munich (61) and Mehdi Taremi v Real Madrid (60).
