Laurie Taylor talks to William I. Hitchcock, the american author of a new history of Europe. William I. Hitchcok reflects on the US's changing perceptions of Europe since World War II and recalls how, ten years ago, he found himself in a unique position within American academia when he decided to specialise in contemporary European history. Hitchcock believes that Europe's recent history and development has been little short of revolutionary and yet it's a revolution that's gone largely unnoticed across the Atlantic.

Laurie Taylor investigates the glamour of the 'previously owned' as he explores the routes clothes and other small objects of desire take from new to second hand to rubbish to collectible. Laurie talks to Professor Louise Crewe, from the University of Nottingham, and Nicky Gregsonfrom the University of Sheffield, authors of a six year study into second hand markets. The study explores where all the stuff comes from, who buys it and why and finds out why these second-hand worlds have become such a feature of 21st century life.
