21ST CENTURY OFFICE
Jeremy Myerson, Professor of Design Studies at the Royal College of Art, talks about one global response to rapid organisational, social and technological changes in the work place, the invention of new office spaces, built along rather more democratic lines than their Dickensian predecessors.
Today the work place is consciously being re-configured to reflect new working practises and life-style requirements. There are nomadic offices and nodal offices, neighbourly offices, even narrative offices! But can they overcome the more traditional mindset of those expected to work in them? Or will old hierarchies just repeat themselves in new ways?
WEATHER WISE
Whatever the weather - wind, rain, snow, sun everything that nature throws at us seems to be a force of fascination. In the UK for instance we enjoy our apparent obsession with the weather – we’ve been measuring rain fall longer than anyone else – but how do we compare with say the United States and why do some experts claim that weather is no longer a dominant topic in our conversations?
One side-effect of the debate over global warming has been a considerable development in the science of weather forecasting but as Steve Rayner, Professor of Science and Civilisation at the Said Business School and Brian Cathcart, author of Rain, discuss, we are notoriously disinterested in adapting our behaviour to suit the weather and may have excellent socio-economic reasons for not wanting to see too far ahead.
