CAPITAL PUNISHMENT IN USA
On Friday 18th March, Kendall Thomas, Nash Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Law and Culture at Columbia University in the City of New York, is delivering a lecture entitled "If There is Such a Thing": Race, Sex and the Politics of Enjoyment in the Killing State".
Laurie Taylor is joined by Professor Kendall Thomas to discuss how capital punishment helps to give US citizens a sense of belonging and the role it fulfils in a 'post-racial' society.
CLOTHING AS MATERIAL CULTURE
A new volume of essays 'Clothing as Material Culture' addresses the notion that the fabric and fibre of clothes, and the techniques with which they are stitched together can give us new insights in to how people think about themselves and their relationships with others.
Dr Susanne Küchler, Reader in Anthropology at University College London, is co-editor of the book and joins Laurie Taylor to discuss the cultural importance of combining the material and social aspects of dress and textiles.
GYPSIES
Donald Kenrick, Vice-President of the Gypsy Council and author of The Romani World: A Historical Dictionary of the Gypsies dispels some of the prevalent myths about the origin of Gypsies and looks at where the word comes from.
