BRITONS IN FRANCE
According to the most recent French census, the number of Britons living in France has increased by fifty per cent in the last five years. Laurie Taylor is joined by Michaela Lord , sociologist at the University of Hull to look beyond the picturesque vignettes of 'A Year in Provence ' and delve into the expectations and experiences of a group of Brits who have relocated to France's beautiful Lot Valley.
NAZI CHIC
How do we explain our insatiable appetite for information about the Nazis sixty years after World War II? Why are we endlessly fascinated by the Third Reich? Even one of the latest Barbie dolls is wearing a traditional German dress favoured by the Nazi regime, a couture dirndl.
Professor Irene Guenther believes that women's fashion is part of the key to understanding this. She explains that by looking at fashion and the fashion industry during the time of the Third Reich, and using it as a legitimate mode of historical documentation, we can learn much about a nation's vulnerabilities and insecurities, its inner workings, and its cultural confidence.
Laurie Taylor talks to Professor Irene Guenther, Professor of History and Director of the Women's Resource Centre at Houston Community College, Texas and author of Nazi Chic, Fashioning Women in the Third Reich. She will also be presenting a paper at the Nazi Chic lecture series, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts today.
