Libby Purves presents this week's edition of the Learning Curve.
Teacher Training The challenges facing those in charge of training enough teachers—and the right sort—are many. Joining Libby Purves are two people at the cutting edge of this problem: Graham Holley of the Training and Development Agency for Schools (formerly the Teacher Training Agency) and Robert Smedley, Dean of Faculty of Education at Edgehill University in Ormskirk, who has reinvigorated his college's teacher training provision and has some tips on how to recruit and retain the best teachers for the future.
A group of eight friends are celebrating forty years since studying at Maria Assumpta teacher training college in London. They’ve had reunions most years but this year the class of '67 travelled from parts far and wide - including Canada and Western Australia to recall those heady optimistic days of the sixties. Reporter Kathleen Griffin went along to find out how their training had prepared them for the classroom and how much things had changed…

Olivia Holmes Libby Purves talks to Olivia Holmes, a volunteer with Volunteer Reading Help. This year marks 30 years since Olivia Holmes first went into Brunswick Park Primary School to help children who were struggling to learn to read. About 1000 children later, she is still going in twice a week.
Volunteer Reading Help is the largest national literacy charity. Volunteers help children with poor reading and communication skills. They go into primary school and spend half an hour twice a week with each child reading, talking and playing games. The aim of the sessions is to boost the literacy skills, self-confidence and self-esteem of the children.
