Libby Purves presents this week's edition of the Learning Curve.
FOUNDATION DEGREES Foundation Degrees, which started life in 2001, are entry-level qualifications which may lead on to degree courses. They are routinely taught in colleges and effectively blur the line between higher and further education – between the academic and the vocational. The Further Education and Training Bill is currently having its second reading in the House of Commons and one of the main changes will be to extend the power to award foundation degrees to colleges. Joining Libby Purves live to discuss foundation degrees are John Widdowson, Principle of New College Durham, and Pam Tatlow, Chief Executive of the Campaign for Mainstream Universities. Reporter: Angela Robson finds out about the foundation degrees at Matthew Boulton College in Birmingham.
FRANCIS GILBERT Libby Purves talks to Francis Gilbert author of I’m A Teacher, Get Me Out of Here about his new book – The New School Rules – which aims to spill the beans on the education system and give tips to parents from inside the teaching profession.
DOG TRAINING The UK has 15 million dog owners who are responsible for 6.8 million dogs. While Dog Control Orders are being brought in by some councils, implementing restrictions on dog owners, the Learning Curve finds out how dog owners learn to manage their animals. Sue Elliot-Nicholls reports from the puppy class at the Islington Pet Dog Care and Training Centre in North London. And in the studio Libby Purves is joined by animal psychologist, Dr Roger Mugford.

The School Aid Roadshow: School Aid is a themed twelve-month education and fundraising campaign aimed at raising awareness among schoolchildren about global poverty and the issues that prevent 100 million children worldwide from receiving an education, whilst also showing how they, as global citizens can help to make a difference. The School Aid Roadshow will tour the UK during the year-long campaign, visiting schools and enabling UK children to experience learning in a ‘typical’ rural African school setting. Schools can request a roadshow visit by booking on-line.
