Olly Murs: 'I want a portrait of me for Christmas'

Olly Murs has had a huge 2016, scoring huge hits with You Don't Know Love and Grow Up and releasing his fifth album, 24 HRS.

So he'll be looking forward to a nice break for Christmas to look back on his success.

We caught Olly in a festive mood recently and found out what he looks forward to most about Christmas, the songs and films he loves and most interesting of all, why he wants a painting of himself as a present...

What happens in the Murs house on Christmas Day?

On Christmas Eve I stay at my parents' house, the next morning my dad makes his own egg and bacon muffins, it's been a tradition since we were little. We always do that. The presents are all under the tree, all from Father Christmas of course. All my family will come round, they'll probably get there about 10 or 11 and then we start opening presents.

After presents we have an hour or two to relax while my mum and dad are finishing up the dinner - which has already been slow-cooked. Then we have our dinner, play games and then everyone goes into a food coma in the afternoon and evening. Sleeping, watching TV.

Does the Murs family ever fight at Christmas?

No. We've never had a Christmas fight. I've never been at my house and seen any of the family fight. It's always been fun and everyone has always had a good time. I'd hate that, I don't think anyone would want that on Christmas Day.

What is top of your list for Christmas this year?

There's this guy that does paintings with his penis. It's really quirky, funny paintings he does and it's self portraits and that's on the top of my wish list for Christmas.

I want a portrait of me, I want it because he's quite talented at what he does, and it's hilarious but also I think it's quite a talking point. It just made me laugh so much when I saw this guy do it.

Where would you hang the painting?

If you put it in your bathroom and then asked people, 'did you like the portrait - did you know a guy painted that with his bits?', I just think that's really hilarious. By the way, I don't have self portraits anywhere in my house. That just made me laugh so much. I'd never heard anything like it, it was the craziest thing ever.

Is there a Christmas movie you watch every year?

Elf. Just because it has a really fantastic story behind it, but also it's Will Ferrell and he's funny. I think it has its light and shade. It has its real funny moments and its also quite sad at points as well. It's just a really feel-good Christmas film.

I've made a mission this year that from the first of December, every day I'm going to watch something Christmassy or do something Christmassy, so I feel like I'm getting excited about Christmas.

What's your favourite Christmas song?

Baby Please Come Home, Michael Buble did a version on his Christmas album. I could pick the classics, George Michael, Elton John, Slade, Mariah Carey and all those ones, but that's the one for me. That's brilliant.

How quickly do you get sick of listening to them?

I don't get sick of Christmas songs, actually to the point where I could listen to them after Christmas. I have to stop myself listening to them after Christmas, because if you've got a Christmas song that's a classic, it's not a classic because of the lyrics, it's a classic because it's a good song.

You don't want it in February, but what I mean is as an artist you'll listen to the melodies and the production and the actual song itself. They're songs you can listen to any time and think 'wow, that's amazing'.

Which fellow pop star would you most like to find under your Christmas tree?

I'd like Stevie Wonder to turn up at Christmas and play some songs for our family. That would be a dream come true. That would be amazing, wouldn't it. "Guys, I didn't get you a Christmas present this year, i've got this guy coming in." Then Stevie Wonder just rolls in and plays.

Merry Christmas Olly Murs!
