बोलता बोलता विषय भरकटला किंवा तुम्हाला नको असलेला विषय आलं, तर हळूच संभाषणाची गाडी दुसऱ्या रूळावर नेणं ही एक कला आहे. हेच इंग्रजीत कसं करायचं ते आजच्या भागात शिकणार आहोत. Why do we need to change the subject, sometimes?

James
Good question. If we don't feel comfortable with the direction of a conversation, we might want to change it. But we need to do this politely.

काही उदाहरणं ऐकू. काय चाललंय त्याचं... ऐका. 

Is the second speaker interested in continuing the conversation?

A)   …so, I told him it just wouldn't be possible.

B)   Anyway, moving on. Did you ever ask Sarah about our new product?

A)   …so, I told him it just wouldn't be possible.

B)   By the way, did you ever ask Sarah about our new product?

A)   …so, I told him it just wouldn't be possible.

B)   On a different note, did you ever ask Sarah about our new product?

No! None of the speakers wanted to continue the conversation. They asked a new, different question. The question they all asked was “did you ever ask Sarah about our new product?”

विषय बदलायचा असेल तर प्रश्न विचारणं हा सगळ्यात सोप्पा उपाय. पण एकदम मधेच बोलणं चुकीचंच ना. यासाठी काय करायचं, एक युक्ती आहे. हे ऐका, काही लक्षात येतंय का? बघा.

They said ‘anyway, moving on’, followed by a new sentence.

त्यांनी वापरलं  ‘anyway’. विषय बदलताना या शब्दाने सुरुवात करू शकता. ’Moving on’ म्हणजे पुढे जाऊ. आपल्याला विषय बदलायचाय, दुसऱ्या विषयावर बोलायचंय, हे यातून समजत.  

James
And, notice the pronunciation. We don’t want to be rude, so we must speak softly. Repeat after me.

We could also say ‘moving forward’, which has the same meaning.

प्रश्न विचारण्याच्या आधी काय म्हटलंय? लक्ष द्या.

They said ‘by the way’. ‘By the way’ is slightly different from ‘anyway’, isn’t it?

जेव्हा आपण ‘by the way’ वापरतो, त्याचा अर्थ असतो की आपल्याला आणखी काही माहिती सांगायची आहे. पण याचा वापर संभाषणाचा विषय बदलण्यासाठीही करतात. आहे ना गंमत.

James
That’s correct. ‘By the way’ can also be used to make a suggestion, or to remind someone of something.

आता हे शेवटचं. यात विषय कसा बदललाय बघा.  

A)   …so, I told him it just wouldn't be possible.

B)   On a different note, did you ever ask Sarah about our new product?

James
They said ‘on a different note’. This is quite formal. I can imagine saying this to my boss in a meeting! Note that when we say this, we stress ‘on’ and ‘different’, but we don't stress ‘a’. Let’s practise! Repeat after me.

Good idea. आता आपल्याला अगदी औपचारिकतेने विचारायचं आहे. काय कराल? आठवतंय?  तुम्हाला म्हणायचं आहे “did you see the news on TV last night?”

सांगा कसं म्हणाल.

Excellent. आता शेवटचं. आता तुम्हाला सगळ्यात informal पर्याय वापरायचा आहे.
