कधी कधी एखाद्या गोष्टीचं नाव माहिती नसतं, मग आपण तिचं वर्णन करून सांगतो. हे असं वर्णन कसं करायचं ते आजच्या भागात समजून घेऊ. इथे तीन लोकं वेगवेगळ्या तीन गोष्टींचं वर्णन करतायंत, ऐका आणि समजून घेण्याचा प्रयत्न करा या आणि समजून घेण्याचा प्रयत्न करा.

• It's like a clock, but you wear it on your arm.

ते कशाबद्दल बोलत होते, त्याचा तुम्हाला काही अंदाज आला का? यातली पहिली व्यक्ती बोलतीये a banana म्हणजे केळ्याबद्दल. दुसरी व्यक्ती व्यक्ती बोलतीये dirty म्हणजे घाणेरडं या विशेषणाबद्दल, तर तिसरी बोलतीये a watch म्हणजे घड्याळाबद्दल. यांना या गोष्टीँना इंग्रजीमध्ये काय म्हणतात ते माहीत नाहीये, पण त्यांनी त्या गोष्टींचं वर्णन केलंय.

So the first person used 'it's a kind of'. You can use this phrase to talk about the category of the thing you are describing. So, for a banana, we can say 'it's a kind of fruit’. And for 'a cat' we can say 'it's a kind of animal.'

हो, so it's a kind of…म्हणजे ते असं आहे... यात kind of  ऐवजी type हा शब्दही वापरू शकतो. So we can also say 'it's a type of'... Can't we?

That's right. So we can also say ‘it's a type of fruit'. So for 'coffee' we can say 'it's a type of drink', or 'it’s a kind of drink', and they have the same meaning.

दुसरी व्यक्ती dirty म्हणजे घाणेरडं या विशेषणाबद्दल बोलत होती. ती म्हणाली clean म्हणजे स्वच्छच्या विरूद्ध. हे वाक्य कसं म्हटलं आठवतंय?  आपण पुन्हा एकदा नीट ऐकूया.

So this is a useful way to describe an adjective, if you know its opposite.

So let's have a quick go – how can you describe the adjective 'cold'?  
OK, we can say: It's the opposite of hot!

तुम्हाला नीट कळलंय ना? तिसरी व्यक्ती 'a watch' म्हणजे घड्याळाचं वर्णन करत होती. होती. ती म्हणाली एका मोठ्या घड्याळासारखी म्हणजे 'a clock'सारखी दिसणारी गोष्ट.

So we can use the phrase 'it's like' plus the thing to say that something is similar to something else. You can also use 'it's similar to'.

तुम्ही पण असंच म्हणालात का? तुम्ही असं पण म्हणू शकता की 'it’s a type of vegetable' and it's similar to an onion. आता समजा तुम्हाला ugly म्हणजे कुरूप हा शब्द आठवत नाहीये, पण तुम्हाला 'beautiful' शब्द आठवतोय – मग तुम्ही 'beautiful' या शब्द कसा वापराल?
