आज बोलणार आहोत अशा गोष्टींबद्दल, ज्यामुळे आपल्याला हसू येतं. हसणं खूप महत्त्वाचं आहे. हो ना टॉम?

Tom
That's important – we all need to laugh! Shall I tell you a joke?

Tejali
तेवढा वेळ नाहीये आपल्याला. त्यापेक्षा हे ऐक.

I think jokes are really funny.

I think this book is hilarious!

The people I work with really make me laugh.

My cousin is so funny. She really cracks me up!

शेवटची व्यक्ती सांगतीये तिच्या चुलत भावंडाबद्दल. पहीली व्यक्ती काय सांगतीये ऐकू.

I think jokes are really funny.

ती म्हणाली, तो जोक अगदीच मजेदार होता, 'really funny'  होता, हे आपण आणखी कुठल्या प्रकारे सांगू शकतो का?  

Tom
Here we had the adverb 'really' – which is similar to 'very'. We can use different adverbs to say how funny something is. We can make it stronger by saying something is 'incredibly funny', or we can make it weaker by saying it's 'quite funny'.

आता पुढंच ऐका. Which word do you think means 'very funny'? कुठल्या शब्दाचा अर्थ very funny होऊ शकतो?

The word is 'hilarious' याबद्दल आणखी काय सांगता येईल?

Tom
Hilarious is an adjective that means 'very funny' and it gives us the noun 'hilarity'. Both of these forms are stressed on the second syllable – it's hilarious and hilarity.

नंतरची व्यक्ती काय म्हणाली ऐका. त्याच्या सहकाऱ्यांबद्दल त्याने काय सांगितलं ?

The people I work with really make me laugh.

Tejali
तो हसतो, कारण त्याचे सहकारी त्याला हसवतात. हसवतात यासाठी इथे make me laughs वापरलंय. 

Tom
Obviously, if something is funny it can make you laugh – it might also 'make you smile' or 'make you happy'.

Listen to these examples and repeat them:

Your jokes always make me smile. 

Seeing my brother makes me happy.

शेवटच्या व्यक्तीने एक म्हण वापरलीये. काय म्हटलंय ऐका.

My cousin is so funny. She really cracks me up!

Tejali
इथे त्याने 'crack' वापरलंय. Crack म्हणजे शब्दशः ‘तोडणे’. 'She really cracks me up!'

Tom
If something or someone 'cracks you up' it means it makes you laugh a lot. We could also use it to describe laughing. For this, we use ‘be’. I could say: 'that joke is so funny – I am cracking up!'

आता वापरायचंय 'hilarious'. तुम्हाला चित्रपटाबद्दल बोलायचंय.

I think this film is hilarious!

Tejali
एका प्रोग्राममुळे तुम्हाला खूप हसू येतं. याबद्दल तुम्हाला सांगायचं आहे. कसं सांगाल?    

Tom
This programme really makes me laugh.

Tejali
आता एक म्हण वापरलीये. आठवतीये का? तुमच्या मित्राबद्दल बोलताना ती म्हण कशी वापराल?

My friend really cracks me up!

Tejali
बरोबर. आता तुम्हाला नीट जमलंय. Now you know how to talk about things that make you laugh.
