आजकाल नातेसंबंध आधीसारखे राहिलेले नाहीत.आज आपण शिकणार आहोत आपल्या कुटुंबाबद्दल, कुटूंबातल्या सदस्यांबद्दल माहिती कशी द्यायची. आजच्या भागातले काही उल्लेख हे पाश्चात्य जगाशी जास्त संबंधित आहेत. पण आपल्याला शिकायला काय बिघडतंय, हो ना, चला सुरूवात करू. फिल, तुझं कुटुंब मोठं आहे का?

मला खूप भावंडं आहेत. दर सणसमारंभाला भेटतो आम्ही. खूप मजा येते. चला आता ही वाक्य ऐकू या.  आपल्या कुटुंबाबद्दल माहिती दिलीये यात. काय काय सांगितलंय? ऐका. त्याच्या वयाबद्दल, त्याचं लग्न झालंय का याबद्दल तो सांगतोय.

I'm married and I live with my partner. My parents live together, but my mother-in-law and my father-in-law are divorced. I have a brother and a sister. My brother is single and my sister is separated. I have a daughter and a stepson.

यात नातेवाईकांची माहिती दिलीये, भावंडांबद्दल सांगितलंय. त्यांच्या लग्नाबद्दल काय सांगितलंय ऐका.

Did you get that? They are married, they said that they live with their 'partner' which can mean 'husband' or 'wife' and we can also talk about partners who are not married.

Thanks, पुढचा भाग ऐकू. कोणाचा घटस्फोट divorce झाला असेल तर त्याबद्दल कसं सांगायचं ते ऐकू आता.

My parents live together, but my mother-in-law and my father-in-law are divorced.

So, he said that their father-in-law and mother-in-law are divorced. Can you explain what –in-law means?

Yes, 'in-law' म्हणजे सासरचे नातेवाईक. म्हणजे सासू होते 'mother-in-law आणि सासरे होतात father-in-law.

We can use this with any family relationship – we also have ‘son-in-law’ and ‘daughter-in-law’.

Notice the pronunciation – when the relationship word ends in a consonant, it joins to the 'in' in 'in-law'. Listen and repeat after me:

We heard that his brother is single – he's not married or in a relationship, and he doesn't have a partner. We also heard that his sister is separated. What does that mean?

बदलत्या काळाबरोबर नातेसंबंधांचं स्वरूपही बदललं आहे. यात अनेकदा पती पत्नी रीतसर घटस्फोट म्हणजे divorce घेण्यापेक्षा वेगळ राहणं पसंत करतात. याला separated म्हणतात.

आपण दोघांबद्दल ऐकलं. एक daughter म्हणजे मुलीबद्दल आणि नंतर stepson म्हणजे सावत्र मुलाबद्दल . Step हा शब्द कसा वापरतात ऐकू.

A stepson or stepdaughter is your partner's child from a previous relationship. Your stepfather or stepmother is your mother or father's new partner. Your stepbrother or stepsister are your stepmother or stepfather's children.

आता हे शब्द तुम्हाला कसे वापरता येतायत का ते बघणारे मी. मला सांगा , तुमच्या सासूचं लग्न झालंय हे कसं सांगाल? हे आपल्याकडे थोडं विचित्र वाटू शकेल पण ब्रिटनमध्ये किंवा पाश्चात्या जगात हे खूप सामान्य आहे. सांगा बर कसं सांगाल ते ?

आता तुम्हाला सांगायचंय की तुमचे सासरे विभक्त झालेत.
