Láimhseáil Liathróide

Is mise Conall Ó Máirtín agus thosaigh mé ar an pheil Ghaelach nuair a bhí mé ocht mbliana d’aois agus níor stop mé ó shin!

Heileo, is mise Bláithín Ní Mhurchú. Thosaigh mé ag imirt peile nuair a bhí mé deich mbliana d’aois. Inniu, sa seisiún traenála seo, tá muid ag amharc ar an dóigh le feabhas a chur ar do scileanna láimhseáil liathróide.

Tá sé tábhachtach go n-éiríonn achan duine compordach le mothú agus meáchan na liathróide. Sa pheil Ghaelach tá cead ag achan duine an liathróid a láimhseáil, ní an cúl báire amháin!

Agus anois, le feabhas a chur ar do scileanna láimhseáil liathróide, ar dtús, rothlaigh an liathróid thart ar do choim, mar sin, mar a bheadh ‘hula hoop’ ann. Sea, sin é, sin an dóigh! Agus anois rothlaigh an liathróid thart ar do ghlúine agus crom rud beag chun tosaigh agus coinnigh ag dul, díreach mar sin, an liathróid a chur thart ar do chorp agus anois thart ar do rúitíní. Sea, crom rud beag chun tosaigh níos mó le cuidiú leat agus anois nuair atá tú ansin, ar ais arís ó bhun go barr do choirp. Coinnigh ag dul, iomlán an bhealaigh, an liathróid a chur thart ar do chorp go dtí do mhuineál agus thart ar do mhuineál agus athraigh an treo nuair atá tú ansin. Ar ais go dtí do choim arís agus lean ar aghaidh, mar sin, díreach ag cur feabhais ar do scileanna láimhseáil liathróide.

Anois, seo dóigh eile chun do scileanna láimhseáil liathróide a chleachtadh. Ar dtús, bíodh do chosa leithead do ghuaillí óna chéile. Crom chun tosaigh rud beag. Anois, cuir tús ar an talamh agus le do lámh dheas, brúigh an liathróid fríd go dtí cúl do choise clé. Agus ansin faigh an liathróid isteach ag do chos chlé, thart ar do chos, go dtí an lár. Brúigh an liathróid fríd go dtí do lámh dheas, thart ar do chos dheas agus go dtí an lár arís.

Anois, leis an rud a dhéanamh rud beag níos deacra, déan é mar seo. Tóg ón talamh é agus cuir tús leis an liathróid a bhrú isteach le do lámh dheas go dtí cúl do choise clé, ar ais go dtí an lár, go dtí an lámh dheas arís, isteach go dtí an lár agus díreach ar aghaidh mar sin. Agus coinnigh ag dul mar sin, agus rud beag níos gaiste, má tá tú ábalta sin a dhéanamh. Agus anois, má tá tú cleachtaithe leis sin a dhéanamh, an treo eile, an bealach eile thart. Ón chúl go dtí an tús agus ná lig don liathróid titim, agus coinnigh ag dul mar sin - rud beag níos gaiste, má tá tú ábalta agus má éiríonn tú níos fearr, ar ais an treo eile arís. Agus anois, sin dóigh eile chun do scileanna láimhseáil liathróide a chleachtadh.

Anois, seo dóigh eile chun do scileanna láimhseáil liathróide a chleachtadh. Ar dtús, bíodh do chosa leithead do ghuaillí óna chéile. Crom chun tosaigh rud beag agus do dhroim lúbtha. Lúb do dhá ghlúin agus cuir an liathróid isteach anseo sa lár le do lámh dheas. Agus ansin do lámh chlé ar chúl na liathróide. An rud atá tú ag iarraidh a dhéanamh ná tá tú ag iarraidh go mbeadh an liathróid ag fanacht ansin, gan ligint don liathróid titim ach ag an am chéanna, tá tú ag iarraidh do lámha a mhalartú thart. Anois, díreach mar sin. An rud atá ann, níl tú ag ligint don liathróid titim. Tá sé ag fanacht ansin agus tá tú ag cur feabhais ar do scileanna láimhseáil liathróide. Agus rud beag níos gaiste, má tá tú ábalta, gan ligint don liathróid titim agus ar aghaidh leat. Agus sin dóigh eile chun feabhas a chur ar do scileanna láimhseáil liathróide.

Caitheann sibh an liathróid ag an am chéanna, caitheann duine amháin thíos faoi agus an duine eile ag caitheamh thuas, thar an liathróid eile. Tosaigh go mall, ar dtús. An bhfuil tú réidh? Tá! Is féidir liom é a chaitheamh thuas. Anois, sílim go dtiocfadh linn an druil seo a athrú rud beag, a Bhláithín, agus feabhas níos mó a chur ar ár scileanna láimhseáil liathróide. Maith go leor!

Anois an t-am seo, beidh muid fiarthrasna óna chéile. Beidh tusa ag cur tús ansin agus mise anseo. Anois, an rud atá muid ag dul a dhéanamh ná cuirfidh mise pas isteach chuig an spás sin ach caithfidh tusa theacht trasna chun an pas sin a fháil, díreach mar sin, ach ag an am chéanna, déanfaidh tusa an rud ceannann céanna. Cuirfidh tusa an liathróid isteach chuig an spás sin. Beidh mise ag dul trasna, greim a fháil air agus pas a thabhairt díreach arís. Beidh muid ag bogadh ar na línte seo, maith go leor? An bhfuil muid réidh? Cuirfidh muid tús leis. Maith go leor, i ndiaidh a trí! A haon, a dó, a trí! Sin é, maith thú! Á, tá sé agam! Ar aghaidh leat, coinnigh ag dul.

Ball Handling

My name is Conall Martin and I started playing Gaelic football when I was eight years old and I haven't stopped since!

Hello, I'm Blaithín Murphy. I started playing football when I was ten. Today, in this coaching session we're looking at ways to improve your ball handling skills.

It's important that everyone gets comfortable with the feel and weight of the ball. In Gaelic football all players are allowed to handle the ball, not just the goal keeper!

And now, to improve your ball-handling skills, first of all, rotate the ball around your waist, like that, as if it were a hula hoop. Yes, that's it, that's the way. And now, rotate the ball around your knees and bend forward a bit and keep going, just like that, put the ball around your body and now around your ankles. Yes, bend down a wee bit more to help you and now when you are there, back up again from the bottom of your body to top. Keep going, the whole way, rotate the ball around your body to the neck and around your neck and change the direction when you're there. Back to your waist again follow on, like that, simply improving your ball-handling skills.

Now, another way to practise your ball-handling skills. Firstly, have your legs shoulder width apart. Bend forward a little. Now, start on the ground and with your right hand, push the ball through to the back of your left leg. And then get the ball in at your left leg, around your leg, to the centre. Push the ball through to your right hand, round the right leg and into the centre again.

Now, to make it a bit more difficult, do it like this. Lift it from the ground and start by pushing the ball in with your right hand to the back of your left leg, back to the centre, to the right hand again, into the centre and simply keep going like that. And keep going like that, and a wee bit quicker, if you're able to. And now, if you are well practised with that, the other direction, change direction. From the back to the front and don't let the ball drop, and keep going like that - a wee bit faster, if you can and if you improve, back the other direction again. And now, that's another way to practise your ball handling skills.

Now, here's another way to practise your ball-handling skills. Firstly, have your legs shoulder-width apart. Bend forward a little and bend your back. Bend your both knees and put the ball in here in the centre with your right hand. And then your left hand behind the ball. What you are trying to do is this, you're trying to get the ball to stay stationary without it falling, however at the same time you are trying to swap the hands around. Now, just like that. The thing is, you are not allowing the ball to fall. It stays there and you are improving your ball handling skills. And a little bit faster, if you can, not allowing the ball to fall and keep going. And that's another way to improve your ball handling skills.

You throw the ball at the same time, one person throwing down under and the other person throwing up high, over the other ball. Start slowly to begin with. Are you ready?

Yes! I can throw it up high.

Now, I think we could change this drill slightly, Bláithín, and improve our ball handling skills even more.

Now this time, we'll be at a diagonal from each other. You'll start off there and I'll be here. Now what we're going to do is I'll pass to that space and you have to shuffle over to get that pass, just like that, but at the same time, you'll do the exact same thing. You'll put the ball into that space. I'll move over, catch it and pass it straight back. We'll be moving on these lines, okay? Are we ready? We'll begin. Okay, after three! One, two, three! That's it, well done! Ah, I have it! Go ahead, keep it going.
