We had an amazing All Hallows Eve - pumpkin lit in the window (then it isn't in danger of theft/rain soaking etc) and a scream mask and black cloak stuck on the inside of the glass front door - gave kids the nod that it was ok to call for goodies.

And boy, did they call!!

All had made a supreme effort, were giggly and happy (sugar overload?) - came with adults lingering by the gate for safety and only took one goodie each and said thank you!

We wanted to eat about 7pm, without being disturbed, so put out the candle in the pumpkin, took down the mask and it worked a treat -(see what I did there?) no more callers.

Either that, or it was the BIBLICAL rainstorm that battered the house that kept them away.



Back later, too much waffle for this early in the mench chase, sorry!

#54 Totally agree about the fog lights, Bingo. It seems that every idiot in Donegal who has them puts them on...



My poor dad, who also hates them, was completely mortified once when he'd turned his on by accident and was pulled in by the police. Fortunately he only got a warning! I seem to find mine by accident occasionally too, but I notice the light on the dashboard and fix the situation promptly.



Other pet peeve is people texting while driving. I thought the man in front of me was drunk the other day, but then I saw the mobile in his hand with him pushing buttons. I followed him for ages because I was afraid to try to overtake! He could have veered right into me!

Afternoon all. It's been a busy day for me running around after cherub and her friend. Had some really heavy hail earlier while we were out. Had to shelter in ELH (who incidently have started the double points exchinge this week).



Am now in need of chocolate in any shape or form.



Had I been here earlier (which of course I wasent) Id have gone with LAST NIGHT MY WIFE HOOVERED MY HEAD, a resounding favorite in our house and sung everytime I trim hubbs mop and then ge the vacum out to clean up :-)

I didn't get chance to blog earlier, but I just wanted to comment on Simon's insomniac musings (no Muse pun intended) I have struggled with sleep issues for years, and ten years of broken night's sleep with the twins hasn't helped. I've never been a good sleeper, not even when I was a child, and I've tried many weird and wonderful things to aid sleep. I've counted sheep, imagined myself climbing a staircase to a light filled room, done breathing exercises etc all to no avail. I've never taken medication, other than trying melatonin, which gave me very strange dreams. It's something I've just learned to live with, I suppose, but the weariness does get you down sometimes.



Anyway, getting to sleep tips always welcome.



Welldone anyone who got a mensh, I don't think I heard any names, too much going on!

I do sympathise with people who don't get a good night's sleep. I've had sleep problems for years too and I used to get very stressed about it. I have been known to get palpatations, and to feel afraid of not being able to function at work.



Nowadays, I waken up several times a night. But I have learned to just relax and think about how lovely it is to be in a warm bed, and not to have to be anywhere else. If you stress about it, it just gets worse! At least your body can relax, even if your mind can't, and that's something.

Well done Autumn_Gale for the mention and the various OSMs tonight.



Hideous weather here today, hailstones battering the windows at the moment as they have been for much of the day.



I always feel for Simon when he posts about his sleeping problems, it must be just awful. Just hope Nigel’s mushrooms don’t give him nightmares - never seen him look quite so disgusted!



I’ve never really had a problem sleeping - my biggest problem has always been going to bed at a reasonable time.



One of Simon’s guests mentioned recently how as you get older you stop being able to stay in bed in the mornings - I assumed this would eventually happen to me but I still stay up far too late at night and enjoy staying in bed at the weekends and struggle to get up during the week - oh well.



When I’ve had trouble sleeping my techniques (bear with me here) is to take each letter of the alphabet and try to think of a food, boys name, girls name, town, county etc for each, having to remember everything cumulatively. Worked for me anyway.

Still here....



I've never had problems with sleeping - if anything it's the reverse for me - but one thing I did hear and have tried on odd nights when I can't sleep is to have a radio on low and listen out for words beginning with letters of the alphabet in order and it's not often you'll reach 'z' - worked for me.

I always have the radio or a podcast or listen again on when going to sleep. Simply can’t sleep in a silent room.



Sal - not sure about celery juice - I’m on the beetroot juice at the moment - but late in life I am celery convert - I used to hate it but now it goes into almost everything I make - not sure my granny would approve of it being in lentil soup but I think it is fantastic - adds such a savoury note to everything, especially risotto.

Talking of spelling mistakes - sorry Jennie - I feel this is the not the first time I have spelt your name wrong.



And I meant to say - Lilac Blue - so pleased you are enjoying your holiday and especially the pizza! I can go from one year to the next without wanting ice cream but the gelato in Italy was amazing - especially the coffee flavour.

I can concur that risotto with celery in it tastes divine. I don't think I'd like celery juice, though. I can take the vegetable raw, but juice is a bit "full on".

Looks like yesterday was a quiet blog day - and I wasn't around... Should that make me worried?



Interesting day yesterday. I went to a meeting at which we were updated on our company's arrangements for hiring migrants (we recruit quite a lot of top-knotch scientists from overseas so it's quite an important issue). During the meeting, as an exercise we completed the test that people have to do before they can be granted residency in the UK. You have to get a minimum of 18 out of 24 multiple choice questions correct. I and 2 others got 19, and that was the top score from a group made up of - as far as I know - entirely British people...



I'm not a big sufferer of insomnia but it does hit me from time to time. I find a cup of camomile tea helps. Other than that, visualisation exercises do at least take your mind off worrying about not sleeping. I've tried counting down slowly from 100, and visualising the numbers as if I'm reading them. Also imagining moving to a new house and picturing what the layout would be like, how I would decorate each room, etc. And lying in a hammock on a deserted beach is a good one too.



Another fairly busy day at work, but hopefully I should find the odd moment here and there to pop in.

On the subject of sleep, I can't go to bed too early otherwise, like Simon, I will be awake around 2 am or 3 am and that's it! So I tend to stay up til around 11.30pm and hope the brain cells stay calm until 6am.



Amelia, I think it is true that as you get older the earlier you rise. I have to get out of bed as soon as I waken up...........unlike my teenage years
