One last 9/11 memory - a friend of mine flew out to Toronto on the 14th on one fo the first flights out of Manchester when they resumed. A very tense set of passengers, but possibly one of the safest flights they would ever take, ironically. They arrived, very relieved, and applause broke out spontaneously on board.

We were driving back from a weekend away in Bath I think, and it was peeing down - the show really cheered us up on the journey.

Off to a garden centre now which is a good 20 miles from home (even though there are about 5 such centres just down the road from here). The fact said garden centre does the most amazing homemade cakes in its coffee shop has absolutely no bearing on why my friend and I are going all that way. Honest ;-)

#69 - John,I read your post ending "there was a lot more energy and lively chat in those days...." Do you think it is because many of the then regular bloggers have had 'real life' interferring with their blogging and simply can't contribute as they used to, for whatever reason? Even the bloggers who contribute now, have work commitments and are not able to post as much as they would like.



Also, there has been a lot going on - 'lympics, paralympics, sunny weather, festivals etc etc distracting folk from this 'ere blog. ;0)



Those of us who can blog, do, but responses are not as rapid as they used to be and the impetus sort of peters out, I feel - but nevertheless, this is still the best blog for help and support when it is needed and general chat about the world in general.



So I suppose the message is - KEEP ON BLOGGING! I love being part of it.

I think my luxury would have to be an endless supply of paper and pencils. Being on a desert island would be the ideal opportunity to write that novel I've never got round to starting... And there are far too many good books for me to be able to choose just one - so maybe it would have to be a cookery book... perhaps one of Rick Stein's, he does a lot with fish...

Never heard of mondegreens myself before Monday's quiz show, but have suffered from years of poor home recordings on TDK tapes (other tapes are avail etc) that were over and over recorded so know full well what they are.

I prefer Kirsty on DID rather than Sue Lawley, just IMHO

I love that Radio 4 have an archive of everyone who has been on Desert Island Discs together with their choices; I think it is a great show. I don’t think there is electricity. Solar power maybe?



Book would be either Underworld by Don DeLillo (never found time to read it) or the complete Rebus series Ian Rankin



Songs would be Idioteque – Radiohead / Born to Run / West of Her Spine – Bell X1



My other luxury would be podcasts, particularly the missing early Wittertainment ones (hint hint!)



Obviously I agree with Simon that this is a fine place to hang out.



#23 Autumn_Gale - West Wing would be great. I re-watched the entire thing last winter and loved every minute of it. The early episodes are even more interesting as you know the story arc of the characters. I would happily watch it again. It was David Tennant’s luxury.



Flo – from last night – meh re digital spy, all the people won’t be pleased all the time. I love the 3-worders. As was said over the page it is fun imagining what is happening to the people and trying to condense a situation into 3 words. I’ve had a few read out and am always pleased. As for the RC comment, too daft to even comment on.



I think the “blogger / listener interaction” (you know what I mean) makes the show. I hate “phone-ins” such as the last hour of the 5 Live breakfast show or even worse Stephen Nolan. I am not interested in the (usually) ill-informed views of joe-public but 3-worders, choon choosing, homework, reaction to the confession etc I absolutely love. Mentions and OSMs are obviously great too!



I’ve just finished listening to Stephen King’s The Dome, all 34.5 hours of it. Just fantastic, great story, wonderful characters. A steal at £4.33 from a well known purveyor of audiobooks. I have more time to listen than to read so long audiobooks are great.

Two Mexicans are stuck in the desert after crossing into the United States , wandering aimlessly and starving. They are about to just lie down and wait for death, when all of a sudden Luis says:

With renewed hope they struggle up the next sand dune, & there, in the distance, is a tree loaded with bacon.



There's raw bacon, there's fried bacon, back bacon, double smoked bacon, every imaginable kind of cured pork.

"Luis, maybe ees a meerage? We ees in the desert don't forget."

With that, Luis staggers towards the tree. He gets to within 5 yards, Pepe crawling close behind, when suddenly a machine gun opens up, and Luis drops like a wet sock. Mortally wounded, he warns Pepe with his dying breath:

#54 I didn't really enjoy the dinosaur episode. I'm also finding that I'm becoming increasingly irritated by the incidental music which I believe is becoming intrusive. I discussed this with my brother. I argued it's making the show feel "sillier". He replied "it's a family show". I said "it should be darker. Will any kids be hiding behind the sofa when the Daleks are on if pantomime music is playing over the top?" His stance was the fact that they aren't aving to hide is probably a good thing.



I'm still unconvinced. I think he's got his "soon to be a parent" hat on :-)

#54 Amelia - I enjoyed 'Dinosaurs On a Spaceship', it was a slight, and often silly, tale, but an enjoyable romp all the same. I never have a problem understanding what Matt Smith is saying, but then, I am quite taken with him, so am probably hanging on his every word... ;D (The feminists who were attacking Steven Moffat would have a dicky fit!) I loved Rory's dad, Brian, wonderfully played by Mark Williams.



My Desert Island list would be...

Luxury - Internet access (solar-powered, of course)



Book - A survival guide by Ray Mears, or Bear Grylls. (Would come in very handy)

#62 Ken I don't watch Dr Who particularly, but incidental music, should form part of the atmosphere of the programme and I agree children should be watching it hidden behind the cushion or the sofa, speaking as one who did to the original series (Tom Baker vintage).



Also I watch Merlin with my 6 year old daughter and see runs off when the scary music is on, but always comes back for more. IMO children love to be scared, especially when the can hide behind the sofa!

Alice, Ken and Amelia - I think Doctor Who has always been a mix of the dark, the sublime and the ridiculous. Since Doctor Who returned under Russell T Davies' leadership, there have been plenty of silly episodes, Aliens of London & World War III with the flatulent Slitheen, or Love and Monsters (which I loved, but many hated) for example. There have been very dark episodes scattered in the mix, like Blink, which was much loved, and was written by current show runner, Steven Moffat.



I haven't been the biggest fan of Steven Moffat, I do think that the show hasn't been as strong under his tenure as it was under RTD, but I had problems with some of his writing too... I am sorry that Steven Moffat was driven off Twitter, possibly partly due to all the attacks from feminists, about his treatment of female characters.



On the incidental music issue, I've thought that the music has been OTT since the show returned. Murray Gold has done some lovely music for Doctor Who, but it can be too much, and drowns out dialogue, and intrudes on emotional moments where less would be more.



I think that this series is heading towards darker episodes, with the return of the weeping angels, and the departure of Amy and Rory. Sorry if that's spoilery info for anyone.

#58, gazza You are mistaken. The Who have had 27 British chart hits, none of which have been to Number One, but they are not even close to the record. That belongs to Depeche Mode, you have also never been to Number One, but have had 43 top 40 hits, and a further 5 that charted outside the top 40.

Zoe – perhaps silly was the wrong word because I agree there have always been good, daft episodes.



It is a huge shame that Steven Moffat has been driven off twitter. I wonder how “famous folk” cope with the inevitable abuse on twitter. I guess for most it is more than compensated by nice tweets?



I think there is a difference commenting on somewhere like here about likes and dislikes and sending a nasty / abuse tweet to the person concerned. No matter how much I dislike someone it would never occur to me to tweet them, I just wouldn’t be following them in the first place.



I liked Love & Monsters even if it was DT light.



The combination of Russell T / DT / Steven Moffat will never be bettered.



I generally like Murray Gold’s music but incidental music should add to the whole viewing experience but should be largely invisible (although not inaudible obviously), if you are aware of it then it is probably too much.



I have something important I should be doing for Friday, hence the lots of posting on here today (and why I can't come on Friday), I really need to go. I think my first ever Simon mention was a 3-worder procrastination, procrastination, procrastination ….

#69 Amelia - I think silly is o.k, but yes, there have been some very enjoyable daft episodes. I think Dinosaurs On A Spaceship was built around the title, like Snakes On A Plane was, it was silly, but I still quite enjoyed it, each to their own though. :-)



Steven Moffat's wife, Sue Vertue, said that he'd left Twitter because he found it too distracting, but I've read since that he had been receiving a barrage of hatred from self-declared feminists, who hate the way he portrays female characters in his writing (such as this article, which I think is mostly nonsense btw https://thinkprogress.org/alyssa/2012/09/06/799791/steven-moffat-im-over-your-lady-issues/?mobile=nc ) I think it's fair to say that any celebrity on Twitter receives a fair amount of both praise, and scorn. Most of them handle it with grace, and just block repeat offenders, but some celebrities deal with "trolls" in a more forceful, and sometimes unwarranted manner, by getting their followers to round on their perceived attacker. Most of the celebrities I follow on Twitter seem to handle negative comments pretty well - I'm sure the blocking feature is very useful. It must be hard to stop the more persistent offenders though - there was a TV programme recently about Richard Bacon's experience of trolls, which I found quite shocking...

Phew... just made it back here in time for a quick catch-up and to hear the start of the show. I would also like to wish Jeffrey of Maidenhead all the best for his number ones and the general knowledge questions on Mastermind tomorrow night. Any idea when it will be aired or is it one of these special lives shows? If live, I shall have to record it because I'm going to see the very funny Kevin Bridges tomorrow night, so I'm off to check the TV to see if it's live.

Re the new series of Dr Who... I too haven't watched any of the programmes this time and I still miss David Tennant, who was my favourite Doctor.

I knew that Depeche Mode were the answer to gazza's question, but had to google to find the precise number. He threw me with The Who, so I googled that bit too. Incidentally, the answer to yesterdays question (to save you searching back) was that in each of those years, the total number of Number 1 hits in each year was 17. The missing year, also with 17 Number 1's was 1972.
