Tanned and gorgous

Simon Mayo|09:22 UK time, Thursday, 5 July 2012

Well that was all ok in the end even if the voice sounded a little feeble to me. It was good to be at least 'giving it a go' rather than just lazing around moaning. The only trouble with going back to work is the long list of folk who feel they have to tell you how pale, ill, exhausted, wan, heavy eyed and thin you look. If I had a badge saying I ALWAYS LOOK LIKE THIS I'd be tempted to wear it. A lot. What a great thing radio is. I had to cancel a school talk today which is a shame but I'm not sure I could have coped with 11 and 12 year olds looking at me with concern in their eyes and suggesting I should 'take it easy' or 'could they get me a glass of water?' I shall return when I am strong and vigorous.

Welcome to new bloggers and blogvets and regulars, another day of unbridled yet politely moderated conversation awaits and as Nigel is doing some BBQ chicken, let us tempt fate and do SONGS FOR THE BARBECUE which might be easier than the Higgs particle.

Have a calm and controlled Thursday, see you after 5

An obscure one from a favourite album of mine back in my youth; from the Vindicator* album by the former Love guitarist:

HAMBURGER BREATH STINKFINGER by ARTHUR LEE

    No?

*Thinking about dividing up the record collections after relationship-splits and I'm wondering who got custody of that one?

  • Comment number 35.

#31 LF were playing in London earlier this week in the same place I was at last night Harry. I did wonder about going to see them but I can't decide whether I like the idea of them without Lowell's voice. I bought one of their post-Lowell albums (Let It Roll) and couldn't really decide if I liked it. Mybe time to give it another spin, although too late for the current tour.

  • Comment number 39.

#loveabitofSouthernRock OK, so it seems like tonight will have to be the first play this year for One More From the Road as I love a bit of southern rock as much as the next person. Neighbours may wish to insert earplugs before I start whistling along to Freebird. Will follow up with Waiting for Columbus by LF.

Enjoying a few days back in the UK and for today at least the sun.

As the barbeque is often considered a mans domain

ITS A MANS WORLD = JAMES BROWN

    Enjoy the day

  • Comment number 48.

On the pretext that one requires matches for the barbecue (lighting thereof) - how's about MATCHBOX by ADAM COHEN. Gorgeous song....

  • Comment number 49.

Morning all! I have an absence note - no internet - no idea why - could be anyone's fault - probably mine but could have been the dog, the rain, government spies etc etc....

Can I add my name to the list of bloggers who have welcomed back Mr M (obviously I am a day late and I didn't hear the show last night but excellent news that you are back in the hot seat)

Barbeques? I went to one last night. It was good, if a little wet. I would have to suggest:

BURNING FOR YOU - BLUE OYSTER CULT

    or failing that,

RELIGHT MY FIRE - TAKE THAT

PLAYING WITH FIRE - IRON MAIDEN (a fave of Mini Hoffs')

I am really grumpy today. Sorry. Need to go out and ride my bike for a couple of hours and then hopefully back in a better mood. Will read back first.

  • Comment number 50.

#12 - Harry, you have made me smile, thanks. Maybe less time on the bike necessary now.

    :^)

  • Comment number 56.

    Good morning (just),

Sorry but yet again I don't have time to have a proper read back. As I scrolled down I saw mention of Philip Glenister. Has anyone mentioned his part in the Calendar Girls film yet? Not his usual mean, moddy and smoldering role either.

Nice to "see" B&B's name popping up on yesterday's blog. That's explain why there were so many posts then. How well I remember the sparkly repartee which used to flow between B&B and Mr Snapper.

Anyhow. Must dash... Expecting a State visit later (in laws) so best I get on with dusting the tops of the doors.

    Have a good day.x

#56 Sorry Julia - you too should have been on the list of welcome backs #55

And to you and Jennie - 'lympic torch tomorrow? Take it in turn or carry it together?

    :^)

  • Comment number 59.

#12 - Harry - now that takes me back. I think I still have one of the albums somewhere (in a plain brown wrapper). Infact, that's probably about the only track off the albums that wouldn't get you modded and on the naughty step.

  • Comment number 60.

#57 Hello SunnySideUpSal! Am liking your rain radar

    *dons bikini and smothers shins*

  • Comment number 61.

    Thanks Katy.

Re the 'lympic torch, I know my name was in the frame from someone for a carry soon but it doesn't reach these parts (East Surrey) until Friday 20th by which time I shall be fighting fit and raring to go! Someone remind me to stretch first though. Hmmm wonder if PSL can lend me her white nylon track suit... I already have the Monica hair ;)

Oi Katy, Don wants his bikini back! ;-P

  • Comment number 62.

    Hello All :)

I'm late to the party today (don't ask!)

Anyway, glad to have you back, Simon, even if us mother hens are still clucking!

    TUBTHUMPING-CHUMBAWAMBA

  • Comment number 65.

Welcome back to all those who've been absent!

Doing a bit of catching up, from yesterday's blog...

Re spoilers. Autumn_Gale put it very well. I rely quite a lot on TV catchup as I'm doing other stuff during the week, but we can't start making restrictions on what can be discussed on here. As long as it isn't offensive or upsetting to anyone, pretty much anything goes. Putting SPOILER ALERT at the top of a post should be enough so that those who don't want to know to avert their eyes.

Richard Armitage - yes I can see the attraction, although I wouldn't go out of my way to watch something just because he was in it. And can I throw another name into the mix - Jason Isaacs. There's something rather alluring about a good looking actor who often plays a baddie. Not keen on the long white hair though...

    ;o)

#49 Don't be grumpy for too long, Hoffs. Hugs.

#57 Thanks for that Sal - looks like we might be getting a spot or two of the wet stuff here..

    ~X~

  • Comment number 66.

#65 Do you know what - I previewed my post before posting, and still managed to get it wrong...

    *books optician appointment*

And I also meant to say #30 great idea to include our esteemed leader in the torch carrying - it's only fair...

And #56 I'd completely forgotten about PG being in 'Calendar Girls' - yes, a completely different role for him

    ~X~

  • Comment number 67.

Afternooon all! Thats all the bits of paper stamped & I can actually have lunch.

#12 Harry and #59 Parsley I also know which album you refer to. The one with the misprinted title on the front! #49 Grumpus - bike rides are great, especially on a 125cc. I'd just like to add my vote for:

LIGHT MY FIRE - THE DOORS - above any other version.

It's getty sultry here. *opens more windows*

    #16 Nice one!

    CRUEL SUMMER

    Bananarama

Here's an annoying thing that appeared in my inbox yesterday:

    Dear Mrs XXXXXXXX

'You have been successful in the ballot to attend

The University of Oxford Olympic Torch Event on Tuesday 10 July

at the Sir Roger Bannister Running Track, Iffley Road, Oxford OX4 1EQ'

'Annoying' as knowing in advance that there were 1700 other names in the pot and not expecting to get a look-in, I booked a two-nighter away at a Spa hotel, returning late Tuesday morning after all the traffic chaos has disappeared...and I'm not able to give ticket to anyone else, as it is University card (with photo) and email ticket entry only - oh and it starts at 5.45am!!

So had to give back to the organisers for someone else to be chosen...so made someone's day...

However, just learnt that I am going to the Bronze medal decider game of the Handball competition at the 'Lympic Park, so at least will be able to see the famous Orbit. Warnings about travel to the venue inspire me to start off now.....

  • Comment number 71.

#65 Deebee - oh yes Jason Isaacs (*hello*)

    There's definitely a type emerging here! :D

  • Comment number 72.

Sunny Side Up Sal, thanks for the rain radar link and it's good to know that there's very little rain around today!

How are the Giant Egrets doing down in the West Country? Also, have you come across the Avocets that are nesting not far from you? My sister was telling me about them a few weeks ago because her brother-in-law had first spotted them to-ing and fro-ing during the Springwatch series but the three of them kept it quiet so that their nest-building wouldn't be disturbed by birders or Springwatch, epecially Martin Hughes-Games who lives in Somerset!

Perhaps the Avocets' nest is where you have been on your bike as I know you love your birds, like we do too, especially the seabirds that are around the local islands in their thousands!! I thought of you yesterday when a large group of Eiders were out in the bay.

  • Comment number 73.

#69 Viking Mo... Enjoy your early finish! When you say you work hard every other day, do you mean every day other than today, or do you mean you work hard on alternate days? ;o)

Well seeing as we are confessing our crushes mine has to be David Tennant, the eyes, the smile, the voice, I could go on …

  • Comment number 79.

Afternoon all, the sun is making an appearance today so that's a good start, although some of my working colleagues are suffering the heat of 40'C in Italy this week, not dropping much below at night!

#65 Deebee . . . I never took much notice of Richard Armitage but a woman I used to work with, was a member of his fan club and send him a pair of hand-knitted socks, she got a thank your card and a mention on his fan club page. Jason Isaac's after a short deliberation I don't think I could imagine him playing a nice warm and fluffy part, too mean and moody looking.

Meanwhile, no suggestions from me today, all the good one's have been chosen, will wait and see who gets a mension later on today.

  • Comment number 80.

#75 Harry, you should submit that to Homework Sucks ;)

Not much more blogtime for me today - getting my workload in order to have a work-free weekend. Off tomorrow to finish off all the odds and ends or wedding preparation. Local holiday on Monday means I'll not 'see' you all again until Tuesday

#74 Hilarious, KatyMatey! Especially having recently sung the 'real' lyrics... I've forwarded it to my choir secretary :o))

#79 Sharon, isn't it good when you hear that a celebrity has done something nice like that... I would love to see Jason in a romantic role (or maybe as the next Bond?) but you're right, he does seem to favour the mean and moody type.

#81 Sharon, can you also remember David Rintoul in Dr Findlay?

    Hello again all.

Busy day today, one way or another.

Before you escape home CoffeeBuzz - good luck for Sat - hope it all goes brilliantly!

My hospital app has been brought forward to next week - a cancellation apparently so that will get it over and done with a bit earlier than I thought.

Have been shopping, accompanied by RA - back to normal there then.

Mr has 2 new toys to play with - an electric garage door, so we can both open it and a new shredder as the old one tried shredding itself last week - bit of plastic cog now missing and a rather horrible noise issues forth when we try to use it!

#58 Katy I don't mind what happens with the torch - whatever is easiest!

Sal - like the rain radar map - be able to tell Mr when he can paint the next fence panel now! Did you hear "Twilight" last Fri at about 4.55 on Steve Wright's show?

cBzz - just to add my best wishes too. Have a fabulous, fun & hopefully sun filled day.

cBuzz, all the best for your big day and my best wishes to Mrs cBuzz to be.

I hope it's a great day for you both.

    #65 Jason Isaacs..yes I should say so.

Roopert P-Jones, also I should coco.

The divine Philip Glenister (spotted behind Variety newspaper at Embankment UG stop) *sigh*

Richard Armitage, yes, ooer, and not just because his initials are the same as our very own Knight in shining armour Richard Allinson.

And from completely left-field Steven Mackintosh

Recently in Luther and Inside Men - has something of the little boy lost about him that appeals...

Off work tomorrow, much-needed haircut *phuts fringe out of eyes* and the new Spiderman movie in the evening..

so GOOD LUCK to coffeebuzz and the mrs CB-to-be, the weather won't matter - as the sun will be shining in your memories of the day - our wedding blessing was on a foggy, cold, damp day just before Christmas (we had carols in the service!) and was glorious.

Uh-oh feel hayfever eyewatering welling up.

Our legal wedding was on the other side of La Manche - and for that, the sun really shone!

    Have a LOVELY lovely day!

    Afternoon all!*

Sorry for going off topic (nothing new there then) but I have to say..

Oui, je regrette tous. Tous les croissants, les gateaux, le pain et especialement (sp?) les bananes rouges.

Been out on my newly mended bike. Hard hard work up the front but discovered slipstreaming Mr H made it more bearable. Rather disappointingly, I appear to have expanded beyond my lycra kit, hence regretting all that I have eaten over the last few months. BUT, I am not grumpy anymore. Too tired.

So, a rather tardy welcome to PerfectCircle, I am sure that you have found this a great place to be already, I look forward to meeting you lots over the coming blogs..

Jennie - hope all goes well with the appointment.

CBuzz - if I don't 'see' you over the next couple of days, may I add my best wishes to those sent by other bloggerfolk to you and your missus-to-be.

Jilly - glad you are feeling better

KatyM - thanks for the blog-shout - much woo-and-a-hooing back.

Finally, rather guiltily, I will be in the car on my own between 5 and 6 - one hour of uninterrupted Drivetime. Bliss.

    See you later xx

#84 Flo, thanks for the link, had a look but I don't remember seeing him in that.

#80 CoffeeBuzz, good luck with the happy day for you and yours, just remember, you don't need too much sunshine cause the photographer won't like it, too much light can be detrimental to the photo's and it's difficult for the main players not to squint. Best wishes

#86 Jennie Wren, glad your appointment has been brought forward, hope it all goes well.

Oh, forgot to say 'thanks' to the lovely Ms D Davies for being a patient and non-judgemental listener.

Also, KatyM - on phone calls from radio stations, I had a rather unexpected phone call from Radio5Live this morning - came up as 'unknown' on my phone but I had to answer it in case it was my son's school which doesn't seem to register as a particular number. Declined to take part in the programme. Feared I might say the word 'pants' on air.

#78 amelia - David Tennant is lovely, but I've seen more meat on a butcher's pencil! He always looked skinny on TV, but when I saw him on-stage in Hamlet, he somehow managed to look even thinner! He was amazing as Hamlet though, and I still seek out things he's in on TV, although I thought the True Love thing was a bit lame.

#80 coffeeBuzz - All the very best to you and mrs coffeeBuzz-to-be, for your big day on Saturday. I have you have a fantastic time, and wishing you many more happy years to come :)

Deebee at al - I think Jason Issacs is a great actor, but he does nowt for me otherwise. But then, as I've said before, and will no doubt say again, each to their own.

A very quick dash in after seeing Jennies post about *Twilight* being played on BBC Radio 2 on a Friday, ok, just the wrong side of 5, but who cares.......

Jennie......... Have a look chuck ;)

Flo, I think you can find out about the Great white egrets by googling, I think there is news of at least one chick.

I haven't heard a thing about Avocets in West Somerset, although its nice to know that its being kept quiet...............

    IT'S RAINING AGAIN - Supertramp

A Kate Humble apology re yesterday's tennis scores to KatyMac et al....it was me who asked about Murray because I'm stuck on the wrong continent and half the BBC's services aren't available, it's a silly time zone and there's no live tennis on the telly. So my fault that the Murray score was leaked...sorry folks!
