Sole Music

Simon Mayo|08:45 UK time, Wednesday, 2 May 2012

Still here. Morning bloggers. Just checked the weather maps and it's not getting better is it? The irrational part of me thinks well if it's this bad now, it is bound to get better for the summer. Which of course is nonsense. There appears to be little relation between what happens in the spring and what happens in the summer, so we'll have to keep right on with hope. May day prancing and that 'keep calm and carry on' attitude.

Strangely empty house here with child 3 on a school trip for a few days and only child 2 to keep the empty nest thought encroaching. Blimey. I should be making a packed lunch about now or hassling for school bags to be checked or uniform to be at least the right size. But just twitter and blogging to check and fiddle with instead.

It's the Mayday Mosh today and a chance to rock and tremble on the way home and headbang over the washing up.

Oldies today please on the subject of SHOES. There's a big fancy exhibition on in London with dozens of far-out designs with glitter, ruffles and feathers everywhere (a standard day for Ken Bruce I know but he's always been a trend setter). So SHOES, TRAINERS, SNEAKERS, BOOTS, FLIP-FLOPS, SANDALS. STILETTOS and even SOCKS if you fancy.

Have a well-considered and thought-through Wednesday. See you after 5

    Morning all

Not to be too "Sex and the City" about it bu shoes are one of my passions :) Cheap shoes, expensive shoes, boots, glitter, colour and heels - I'm one of those people who just love great shoes and my spare bedroom is basically a place to store them (well that and the stairs, the dining room, under the bed....) there's a reason I'm single I guess!

    BAREFOOTIN' - ROBERT PARKER

Haven't heard that song for years, I used to have it on a 60s mix tape, I think!

  • Comment number 31.

    Good morning everyone.

No PSL? A dream theme for the domestic goddess I would have thought.

    My offering:

RED SHOES BY THE DRUGSTORE by TOM WAITS

Be back later, I need to some online banking.

  • Comment number 32.

    Oh, and:

SAND IN YOUR SHOES by AL STEWART

  • Comment number 33.

I know its not the boot/booty that Red Leader had in mind possibly but, if only for the epic opening, I'd suggest:

    BOOTYLICIOUS - Destiny's Child

  • Comment number 34.

    STILETTO HEELS by SAILOR

    would fit the theme!

  • Comment number 35.

A 'boot' search revealed a techno/rave song called Das Boot by U96 that made the chart in the early 90's, complete with KLF-style dance beat, submarine bleeps and a German fella saying 'Techno' every 15 seconds. It treads that gossamer-fine line between inspired genius and truly awful.

Why not treat yourself to a YouTube 3 minute break and check it out?

  • Comment number 36.

    Morning all,

DT Team, DT Dude (fluffing the feathers in his temporary empty nest), bloggers, and pet poppets

#31 yes, eggsackerly, she's probably out gathering her hen's eggs for the morning tiffin and will be well miffed to not get her favourite soul oldies about footwear listed!

Did someone day it's drying out? I walked home on a dry path last night by the river (feeling a tad over-done in my wellies) and when I came to cycle the self same path this morning, t'was under water AGAIN. Just enough to sneak into the shoe on the down pedal. Nice.

    Re theme,

2nd/3rd whatever KIRSTY McCOLL IN THESE SHOES (I don't think so!)

BRILL song, felt JUSt like that this morning on seeing the river covered pathway and me in my court shoes..

plus already tweeted Elvis and Blue Suede shoes (not appropriate footware around these parts either today)

Off to try and think of something else, back later for craic, save some for me!

  • Comment number 37.

    Morning All,

No suggestions from me today. Loadsa good ones already.

Just done the Michael Johnson Test. Apparently I perform better when I'm happy and I suppress negative thoughts when I shouldn't. I also score high on Efficiency. Had to LOL when I saw that, hehehe.

Has anyone else done it yet?

    Maybes back laters

    A.

  • Comment number 38.

Morning Simon, team, NYM, and well-heeled bloggers,

Late for me. I have an excuse. Pauses for effect, puffs out chest while trying to sound nonchalant, oh yeah, did I mention I went for a 20 mile bike ride first thing this morning?

Smiles serenely, waits for compliments, only to get wisecracks about men in lycra and somewhere to keep their packed lunch.

So. where are we? At this point I would like to confess I find it hard to read from the top down, and much easier to scroll upwards reading backwards.

Would like to second Zoe's choice of Robert Parker Barefootin', and everybody's Paolo Nutini's New Shoes.

    And I'll add...

HEAD OVER HEELS - Tears For Fears

HIGH HEEL SNEAKERS - Stevie Wonder (love it!)

  • Comment number 39.

  • Comment number 40.

    What would shoes be without...

LEATHER AND LACE - Stevie Nicks and Don Henley

  • Comment number 41.

A proper hello now - sorry for brevity earlier. Still busy at work and likely to remain so for a while at least.

From yesterday's blog - Julia (and anyone else), don't worry about others having already picked the songs you wanted to suggest. It's been said many times before but worth repeating from time to time - none of us "own" the songs and it would be very unfair if only those who have the opportunity to get on the blog first thing with their suggestions got the menshes. If you've thought of a song, and you think it's a good 'un then by all means post it!

#37 I haven't done the test yet Alice, but I'm planning to.

#38 Congratulations John! Although I have to ask - why?

    ;o)

  • Comment number 42.

    LOOSE FIT - Happy Mondays

and please resist any requests for something by Tight Fit.

May be back later for some much missed lunchtime punnage.

  • Comment number 43.

#41 Deebee - long story. GoodChild#2 announced he wanted to bike to school - I think there have been some "bus issues". As it's an 8 mile journey on traffic clogged roads, I said I'd go with him. We took the scenic route, through the park, along the river, over the common. Then I collapsed for a coffee, read the paper, and did the whole thing in reverse. One of the benefits of working at home. (But if he says he's doing it again tomorrow, I may no be so eager...)

  • Comment number 44.

    Morning all.

Expect its above ^^^ but no time to trawl through...

You picked a fine time to leave me loose heel - Kenny Rogers.

    Gotta fly :)

  • Comment number 45.

#37 Alice - I've just done it (quiet day in the office) and got the same scores as you!

  • Comment number 46.

SWEET SOUL MUSIC - ARTHUR CONNOLLY

    O SOLE MIO - ??

Sorry, going to ELH....................Richard has been waiting for ages.........

    Slinks off..

  • Comment number 47.

    Morning all,

Some great suggestions above. I particularly like Paul Simon's Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes and Kirsty MacColl's, In These Shoes? Best out of the box suggestion The Driver's Pump it Up, great stuff :)

    One suggestion only from me

WHO'S GOING TO SHOE YOUR PRETTY LITTLE FEET - RICHARD HAWLEY (love it and worth a listen if you've never heard it.)

    Have a good day all.

Will be back for some punnage smiles later.

    Jilly xxx

  • Comment number 48.

    Morning!

Tweeted my suggestions earlier but forgot Paulo Nutini's New Shoes - I love that song!

#38 - JBG - Congratulations on the bike ride! Excellent! Yes, do it again tomorrow!

Just a quick poop by - doing everything at 90mph today - went into town to get a few things and was waylaid by a coffee and a quick book reading session. It was caffeinated coffee, not my usual tipple. Shopping finished in record time, now off to mow the lawn, Benny Hill style. Might even fit in a bike ride myself, later, before I collapse in a large grumpy heap....

  • Comment number 49.

#48 - By Benny Hill style, I meant going up and down the lawn in a 'speeded-up- sort-of-way'. Not running around with my hat on sideways, followed by scantily-clad-women.

Also, apologies for using up today's blog quota of exclamation marks in one post. Just me today.

  • Comment number 50.

OK, as my mind can't come up with any more sensible suggestions, it's time to get silly:

ELTON JOHN - Sandle in the Wind

JIM REEVES - Heel Have To Go

    LORD ROCKINGHAM'S XI - There's a Moose Loose A Boot This Hoose

KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND - Flats The Way I Like It

GEORGE MICHAEL - I Want Your Sox

  • Comment number 51.

SHOES by REPARATA. She had hit with CAPTAIN OF YOUR SHIP as REPATRATA & THE DELRONS.

John Waters the movie director bought an expensive pair of shoes, a heel broke the first day he wore them, so he took them back to the shop and the salesman said "You're not supposed to WALK in them, sir."

  • Comment number 52.

Happy Wednesdays all round and hello Simon, the Driveteam and Constructors.

Late on parade today - nevertheless would love to hear the following:

  • Comment number 53.

#38 Oooh Tears For Fears, John. A fab song. I'll second that one, please

#45 - Tortie, did you find the musc putting you under more pressure? Was that on a purpose do ya think? I wanted to leave a comment about it but there was no coment box. I didn't 'get' the visualisation thing either. Do you want to know mi Grid scores or will that have an adverse effect on other test takers, do you think?

    A.

  • Comment number 54.

I'm afraid I'm 'seconding' others' songs too

TRY WALKING IN MY SHOES - Depeche Mode

IN THESE SHOES - Kirsty MacColl

VENUS IN FURS - The Velvet Underground (shiny boots of leather)

    DANCING SHOES - Arctic Monkeys

DOCTOR MARTENS BOOTS - Alexei Sayle

with a couple of my own suggestions in there at the end.

  • Comment number 55.

Cheers punsters - laughing out loud - but some of us haven't had chance to make any proper choices yet!

    :^D

  • Comment number 56.

POSITIVELY FOURTH STREET - BOB DYLAN

(I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes)

  • Comment number 57.

Love your Richard Hawley choice. Did you see him on Later With Jools last night?

  • Comment number 58.

    #50... brilliantly done, Driver!!!

#47 Jilly... I'm a fan of Richard Hawley and I enjoyed listening to him last night chatting to Janice Long. Janice played three of the songs from Richard's new album 'Standing At The Sky's Edge' ...... 'She Brings The Sunlight', 'Don't Stare At The Sun' and 'Down In The Woods'.

For Janice's Spoken Word Session, Richard recited an extract from 'The Epic of Gilgamesh', said to be the oldest written story on Earth, originally written on 12 clay tablets!

  • Comment number 59.

    More footwear songs:

IF IT WASNAE FOR YOUR WELLIES - BILLY CONNOLLY

WALK A MILE IN MY SHOES - JOE SOUTH

  • Comment number 63.

lol, can I second, third, fourth (whatever) KINKY BOOTS ?

I expect he won't play it (trying to deny responsibility for it's popularity). Go on Simon, you know you wanna :-)

Hope you all well today. Day 3 with no bathing facilities in our abode, I might end up in the garden under the hose pipe at this rate.

Looking like a dry day in Wigan today, so washing on the line. yippy !!

  • Comment number 65.

Just thought of a few more ...

ALL TIME HIGH - (Spectacularly off-key) Rita Coolidge

    HIGH - Lighthouse Family

THE WINKLE PICKER STOMP - Earl Guest (lovely bit of pointless 60s instrumental!)

THE WEDGE - Dick Dale and his Del-Tones (They don't name bands like that any more. "One Direction", Zzzzzzzz)

  • Comment number 66.

#65 When I say "thought of", I use the term quite loosely. My encyclopaedic knowledge of winklepicker songs is not my usual party-piece

I can, however, safely report there are no decent songs about sandals.

    But I did "find" these:

    IT'S A MOCCASIN - Pet Shop Boys

I CAN'T LOAFER THAT (NO CAN DO) - Hall & Oates

    I STILETTO FOUND WHAT I"M LOOKING FOR - U2

  • Comment number 68.

    #57 & #58

Didn't catch the wonderful Mr Hawley on Jools or Janice but hopefully I can iThingy both of them.

I really love his voice. His album Truelove's Gutter is a particular fave of mine.

  • Comment number 69.

    Afternoon all

BURGUNDY SHOES - a very fine song by PATTY GRIFFIN

  • Comment number 73.

Loving all the punnage kicking around on the blog (in the words of Deebee, did you see what I did there?).

Katy, I hope the Billie Connelly song "If it wasnae for your Wellies" gets picked!!

Can anyone come over to my house and remove a daddy-long-legs from the bath please?

  • Comment number 74.

    Hi Simon,

Here's an oldie challenge - bet you haven't got this one...

SHOO SHOO WAH - The World

I'll be amazed if you play it!

    Thanks,

  • Comment number 75.

    Hello All,

Not much time for blogging today, but like

    'Get On Your Boots' U2

    Have a good day everybody

  • Comment number 76.

Did the unusual (for me) thing of seeing a live act last night of whom I didn't know a single track before the event - namely Newton Faulkner. Took up on a spare ticket - absolutely top drawer. Mesmerising, engaging and songs with hooks aplenty. The venue was Scala in Kings Cross and it is a great little venue., Definitely see Newton again, definitely go to Scala again. Watch out for blogging song suggestions from his canon....

  • Comment number 77.

Incidentally mention earlier of heels made me think of

    HEAD OVER HEELS - Abba

    and

    ACHILLES HEEL - Toploader

    both of which I love.

  • Comment number 78.

A few last minute suggestions ...

And I Loafer - The Beatles

Shoe Were Made for Me - Freddie and the Dreamers

Slipper Sliding Away - Simon and Garfunkel

    ;)

  • Comment number 79.

#71 Harry - knew you would rise to the challenge! Carrot successfully dangled. Nice, but probably not a DT toon/

#77 Rostron - haven't heard that Abba song for ages. Reminds me of my older sister, singing with a hairbrush!

Loving the punnage Jilly, Dryver, and Madchick (#14)

    How about...

I DON"T WANT YOUR FREEMAN HARDY & WILLIS - Wham!

YOUNG CLARKS RUN FREE - Candi Staton

  • Comment number 80.

#76 Glad to hear you've found Newton Faulkner, he's on at our local small fleapit venue (standing only, sticky carpets, you get the picture) next Thursday - SOLD OUT, of course....pants

    Some great punnage today!

#76 #80 Mr B went to see Newton Faulkner a few weeks ago - a pal had a spare ticket and offered it to him. He came home absolutely raving about him. I know he's going to be on in Bournemouth some time in the near future as Mr B was trying to persuade our Daughter to go and see him.

Had to go to a 'bright' (thanks, Shona) meeting.

Stopped only for a quick bite to eat (and a few coffees) and return to pun-central. ;)

Now I'll throw my suggestions into the mix:

Last Trainer to Transcentral - The KLF

    Sandalous - MisTeeq

(Hush) Puppy Love - Jimmy Osmond

Shona - I'll take care of your daddy long legs if you'll shoo away the bee that's managed to insinuate itself between the window plane and blind in my office.

Yesterday I suggested CLOG DANCE for Mayday by Violinski. Was I a day too early?

#79 JBG, I'm disappointed that I'm so predictable but I do like Sia Furler.

I thought "Soon We'll Be Found" was a wonderful song. Radio2 did their best to ruin it by playing it every few minutes but I still like it. Her albums are a little inconsistent but there are some gems, including, although I agree not really DT, "Little Black Sandals".
