My best mate gets up at 4.30 each day as he is a postman and on Saturdays we teach from 2.45 so he always misses MOTD as in the land of Zzzzzzzzzzzz.

Continuing the "shuffle" conversation from yesterday. I was talking to a friend at the weekend who's a bit of a 'muso' and his opinion what the the "shuffle" feature was the devil's work! He felt it was sacrigilious not to listen to whole albums and even skipping over less popular songs wasn't really in the spirit of album listening. For myself, I use shuffle almost all the time now and like Deebee will tend to simply purchase songs I like rather than the whole album but I do still feel a bit guilty about it. I think if you've been brought up with the idea of an 'album' - especially on vinyl with the cover and sleeve notes etc there is something important about the entity that never quite leaves you. There are a number songs from artists whose albums I played a lot in years gone by (whether on tape, vinyl or CD) where when a song finishes on shuffle or the radio, I automatically start singing the next song on the album.



Anyway, after that conversation my resolution is to try to go back to listening "by album" rather than on shuffle when I'm on a long car journey or at home and don't have the radio on for whatever reason. (That said, I'll report back about the first 3 'shuffle' songs later)

Deebee - I think you're right about modern albums and of course there is no 'turning over' now either so the need to balance sides is also lost. However I do think it's a bit of a shame that there are some great songs on albums which perhaps I miss as I only download ones I'm familiar with. I know album tracks is something we've talked about before on the blog with regard to the R2 playlist.



I may have mentioned this before, but when I went to see Brad Paisley this summer he commented how much he loved playing in the UK because he's had no hits here and therefore there's no pressure to play particular songs and he can play what he wants. I thought that was really interesting from an artist's point of view.

#48 #52 Not sure about the "collection of songs" thing. I believe lots of artists will spend many hours agonising over which song goes where on an album to get the right flow.



If I'm sitting down to listen to music I will normally play an album all the way through. Shuffle play would mostly be used in the car or if I've got some sport on where I'm not fussed about hearing the commentary.

#63 Harry, saw that on the Radio 1 website yesterday and had great fun quizzing my office colleagues on the rest of the Top 10 best selling UK albums ever. She's up to number 5 and surely heading for 4, past Oasis?



Reggie Yeates gets great amusement on the chart show (my sole Radio 1 listen these days - I'm just too old) from doing the Top 5 albums and every week without fail saying: 'Who in the UK hasn't bought this album yet?' when he reaches Adele. She's selling 20,000 every week. I wonder how many on this blog haven't got it yet but might?!

#65 It is an incredible achievement. I have it although I must confess I've rarely listened to it end-to-end. I like her voice but on in small doses.

#66 I think Adele's success Harry is that she's a pretty good singer who writes pretty good songs, and isn't some slightly dodgy sex kitten. I try and tell my kids that "back in the day" there were actually lots of these kind of artists knocking about! The difference today is that the market can't sustain more than one original and one copycat, so there is little breadth in the music that gets played on the radio. Out there in the venues and on the live circuit, or in the "they don't sell many albums" world, there are actuallu loads of good singer songwriters knocking about I think...

#65 I don't have it and doubt I ever will. She is just not to my taste. But hats off to her for what she has achieved. I must be wrong on this one. It has happened before ;-).

#61. Richards new album is certainly different, yet unmistakably him. At first hearing, I thought it seemed a little harsh on the ears, but it is a grower. No obvious single, and more 6Music than R2, but I have to say, I really like it, and it may well become my favourite Hawley work ever, and I can go back to The Longpigs with him, and Simon Stafford. What is it like? I've heard it described as psychedelic, and that would fit. Think Perry Como meets Wierd Scenes Inside The Goldmine.

When I play a CD, unless it's in my car, I often play my favourite track first and then listen right through in the order that the artist/s chose as I presume they had a reason for placing them in a particular order.



Like Katy and Billie, I also don't have an MP3 listening device (I tried it) as I don't like listening to music through earpieces or headphones and want to pull them out after five minutes!

Continiung the debate (before IE6 at work throws me out) I found myself sorting through 5 year's worth of accumulated paperwork last Wednesday. To keep me amused I located a Tube of records from the 80's and 90's and just kept going over to the computer & picking the next recommended choon. It was great music to shred by & felt like I was putting 45 single on each time.

I imagine it may have been discussed on here previously...

I think that the trend in the rise of older bands playing whole albums in order rubberstamps the notion that albums were in an order for a reason. I have tickets to see Heaven 17 do The Luxury Gap live in November and love the fact they will be performing songs that they rarely (if ever) have done live before this concept became popular.

What a morning! Tree man came to remove the fallen tree and do general surgery on other trees. The sound of chain saws filled the air! He waspaid part cheque, part cash and part rhubarb. Then we found an injured bird of prey in the yard. Not sure what kind. Waiting for the RSPCA now. Mr P is attempting to keep Rosie away from it. Then the Big Blue had botty problems again. In between all that, I finished my Terms of Reference. Phew!

Sir Tel's big hit was in 1978 apparently and it was The Hanwell Band that accompanied him - nearly the 80's then!!
