Keeping the flame alive
We start the new year with our jolly boiler deciding to take some more time off. Either that or it's dead. And we're cold. And miserable. So I might not linger on this blog if that's ok with you. Boilers are just rubbish really. All they have to do is stay working but they wait for your time of maximum need and just give up. We have called the man with a bag of spanners and healing hands.
Good show yesterday I thought and back in the swing of things. Rust and cobwebs blown away (does that work? maybe rust or cobwebs but unlikely to be both) and looking forward to 2012; it promises to be quite a year. And once everyone has gone back to work, we can get this party started. You send an email and back comes the automatic reply 'I am not working till the 18th. Try my underling who might be back on the 14th.' Kids? Back to school! Go Now! Even if term hasn't started! Wait in the playground and show willing. Students? Back to University! Your parents need to rent out your rooms! Take your washing, your late nights and lie-ins and get thee hence. See you at Easter. You'll be fine. We should know, we are paying for it.
(There. That's better)
Now I'm thinking of IRON LADY oldies. You'll have seen the ads for the film and the reviews and posters. Meryl Streep does indeed put in a fantastic peformance and it is a fascinating film, well worth your time. Please send in as many broadcastable songs as possible. You know what I'm saying. Balanced, nuanced, smart. Like you are normally essentially.
Have a magnificent and sure-footed Thursday. See you after 5.

Laters, enjoy yourselves, but NOT too MUCH.
PS here's a recipie for you all to try:
Once again this year, I've had requests for my Tequila Christmas Cake recipe;
1 cup of sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1 cup of water
1 tsp salt
1 cup brown sugar
Lemon juice
4 large eggs
Nuts
1 bottle of Tequila
2 cups of dried fruit
Method
Sample the Tequila to check quality. Take large bowl; check the Tequila again to make sure it is of the highest quality. Repeat. Turn on the electric mixer. Beat one cup of butter in a large fluff bowl. Add 1 tsp of sugar. Beat again. At this point, it is best to make sure the Tequila is still OK. Try another cup just in case. Turn off the mixerer thingy. Break 2 eegs and add to the bowl and chuck iin the cup of dried fruit. Pick up the fruit up off the floor. Mix on the turner. If the fried druit getas stuck in the beaters, just pry loose with a drewscriver. Test the Tequila for tonsisticity. Next sift 2 cups of salt, or something. Check the Tequila. Now shift the lemon ice srain your nuts. Add one table. Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink. Whatever you can find. Greash the oven. Turn the cake tin 360 s and try not to fall over. Don't forget to beat off the turner. Finally, throw the bowl through the window. Finish the Tequila and wipe the counter with the cat.

I was a milk monitor in my second year of primary school. I and another girl had to give out all the little bottles to the class at break time. Very responsible job it was too.

Actually, have never drunk milk, detest the stuff. Dont drink tea, coffee, have dry cereals, jam and butter on weetabix, if I ever have weetabix that is. However, I do like a nice thick yoghurt!
Is this wind ever going to die down?
I still have half a tree to remove from under Noggin, before I venture out today. Landslides on the way up to the lab as well last night, so not sure if will be accessible today or not!
Getting back into the work routine is a bit of a struggle, guess a full week next week, will motivate me more!
Has anyone seen Mcw?

Working at Mansfield General hospital during the strikes, I saw some very ugly injuries from the picket lines. I used to get stopped by the police going to work on an early shift and had to reasure them I wasn't a flying picket!

BTW, my resolve to stick to Simon's 'balanced, nuanced, smart' edict has nothing to do with any political views I may or may not hold. Truth be told, I'm a bit of a fence-sitter. I like to listen to what the various politicians have to say and take a balanced, reasoned view based on who I think is talking the most sense. Which is actually quite hard these days, with our current crop...

What I got from Simon's blog, was broken down boilers and Maggie Thatcher. I will leave it to others to make comparisons, or not! ;)
Like Harry, I can't bring myself to suggest any oldies in honour of 'Lady' Thatcher, her name is akin to a swear word in these parts.
I lived very close to Orgreave colliery during the miners strike, and it was a dreadful time. When the surrounding collieries closed down, the place was left to go to rack and ruin. Things only started to get better during the (late) 90s.
Apropos of nothing, I was once in a lift with Arthur Scargill, he became as hated as Mrs Thatcher around our way.
I'm sure the film is full of Oscar worthy performances, but I'm afraid that wild horses couldn't drag me there.

Not that I necessarily practice what I preach - I still have Son's cuddly toy lamb that was given to him by some good friends on the day we came home with him. Double poignant, as the lady half of the couple is sadly no longer with us...
#91 Maybe he's going to rustle up something with the Christmas leftovers. Sprouts, anybody...?
I'm looking forward to hearing what Simon and Mark have to say about the film this week in their Wittertainment show. But, (unless they absolutely hate it) on balance I probably will go and see it. It was certainly a very interesting time in history - and at the time I was too young/naiive to pay it the attention I probably should have.
