FFFFFFriday

Simon Mayo|08:07 UK time, Friday, 9 December 2011

And good morning to you. Up early, too much to do. Seems calmer and colder around the estate, not that I've walked it for long. Inside, the Christmas tree is up and rather lovely, though unadorned. The delicate negotiations about decorations have begun; everyone has their own ideas. Some are flexible, others intransigent - it's much like the Eurozone discussion really and I'm Herman Van Rompuy (I think). Child 3 breaks up today which seems excessive but it does mean that Christmas is pretty much arrived around these parts.

I'm off to a screening of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" this morning (the new one with Daniel Craig) and appears to take up about 2 and a half hours, then to 5 Live for some movie chat. Antonio Banderas and Selma Heyak talk "Puss in Boots" and also an intriguing Frenchman called Michel Hazanavicius. The name is pronounced Michel Haz-ana-vi-shoos, and he is the director of "The Artist" a new, black and white and (nearly) silent movie. Unbelievably, bearing in mind how out of step it is with every other film around, there is Oscar talk and is in with a chance of being the first silent film to win Best Picture Oscar since Wings in 1928.

Then a merry jaunt on the Central Line to Radio 2 and your very own All Request Friday. I'm thinking already of a pulsating, head-turning slice of music to get things going and that is where you come in. Though talk of blog-parties and the Oxford comma deserve attention, so does the ARF crown. Over to you.

Have a tantalising and satisfying Friday, see you after 2&5.

A nice early blog this morning Simon.

    Good Morning to you too.

    Hi Simon,

Seeing as it’s the end of the first full week of December, with the party season really kicking in, and with many of us either having put our decorations up or thinking about it this weekend, can I suggest your first Christmas-themed All-Request Friday Opener?

As of 5’o’clock Friday, I know that the kids are on their way to their Nana’s, whilst my lovely wife Karon McFadyen is getting ready to paint the town red, with all at Wigan & Leigh Housing and with her best mate Jane along for the ride too. I think she’d admit herself that she’s no particular fan of the album this comes from (Hark The Herald Sings done in LATIN???!!), but we both love this particular one & I think it definitely fits the bill as a pulsating, head-turning slice of music!

So, if (bad) taste permits, can you play...

Must Be Santa, by Bob Dylan?

Thanks & I will be listening in myself, whilst doing the considerably less exciting job of commuting home from work, in time to to take the party girls to their “Do” later...

    All the best,

    Paul McFadyen

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

Taking us all by surprise with an early blog this morning, Simon! We were still chatting in yesterday...

For a pulsating and head-turning start to the show, how about:

DEVIL GATE DRIVE by Suzie Quatro

YOU'RE THE VOICE by John Farnham

    or

LESSONS IN LOVE by Level 42

Good morning Simon, Team, NYM and blogpoppets all! Wow, it's been a while since I typed that. Shouldn't really be here but I am ;-)

    ARFO for today

The Who - My Generation (please don't confuse it with "Won't Get Fooled Again)

Pretty calm & mild here at the mo. Long may it last!

    Catch y'all later.

Morning Simon, team, NYM and party-planning bloggers

End of term here too today, so it all kicks off tonight. Thank you kindly for last night's mensh for I Want It All, and apologies for being so greedy and demanding.

"Well if you're doing pulsating and head-turning, you have to start here..."

Morning all - sat at the keyboard doing last minute revising on the 'Show me, Tell me' questions I'm going to get on my driving test later. How about:

CRAWLING FROM THE WRECKAGE - DAVE EDMUNDS/NICK LOWE.

    I can't believe how nervous I am.

  • Comment number 7.

'Yikes' for song choice Lady S!

Best of luck to you for your driving test. I took mine in rush hour traffic in Swindon. Deep breath and go and show them how its done.

    MTF :)

  • Comment number 8.

#6 Lady Stormrider - curiously, that's the very tune that I woke up with in my head this morning....

My ARFO suggestion, I've said it before and I'll say it again...

    CHICAGO - 25 or 6 to 4

Back in the day Chicago were a fantastically upbeat, sassy, funky, rocky kind of group. Hard to believe that most of my generation know them as the perpetrators of "If You Leave me Now" and those sloppy ballads in the 1980s.

  • Comment number 9.

#6 - Forgot to say good luck with the test! I took mine at 9am the day after getting back from a holiday abroad, so i hadn't driven at all for three weeks. Still managed to pass, though, thankfully.

I was lucky when it came to the examiner showing me his little book of signs - the first one was the countdown markings to an exit on the motorway. The second was the A-road equivalent - two for the price of one! The third was a level crossing - easy peasy!

All the best, take a deep breath, and just do what you and your instructor know you can do already. Fingers crossed!

  • Comment number 10.

I wonder if the Floorboards will creak in with an ARF suggestion?

    MTF :O

  • Comment number 11.

    Morning all

    Sunny and calm here today!

Lady S - good luck with the driving test!

As it's our Christmas 'do' tonight, can I suggest:

    MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY - Slade

I was wondering, is having a 'do' a northern thing, (remember the series "A bit of a Do") or is it something southerners say too?

    Back later

    Morning all,

DT team, bloggers, poppets dogpoppets, and of course the slightly more seasonal DT Dude himself.

Glad to hear that the Mayo house is now entering the advent spirit as #3 child starts his L O N G Christmas hols - our students 'went down' a week ago today!

Question to bloggers: as a child, did you prefer the Xmas holidays or the long summer break? Personally, I always preferrred the February 1/2 term to any other as my birthday always lands during that time.

My sister's birthday is in August so NEVER had to go to school on her birthday either - and I now have 2 friends with Xmas day birthdays which they like now, but of course hated as children.

Onto the important subject of the *ARFO*, and I would like to propose a song that helped me to feel less of a gawky podgy kid, for which I will be forever grateful to...

*SIR ELTON JOHN and his song CROCODILE ROCK*

    if only for the lines

"Oh Lawdy mama those Friday nights

when Suzie wore her dresses tight

and the Crocodile Rocking was out of sight"

What fun was there to be had at the St Alphege church hall discos in the 70's when that came on and I mimicked 'wearing a tight dress'

He's been played mid-show afore, but I didn't see him once on Katy Mac's ARFO list t'other day.

My Sunday name being Suzanne, Leonard Cohen kindly wrote a lovely song about my predilection for riverside wandering, but it's hardly an ARFO, is it?

Have a loovely weekend all, we will be 'treeing' next weekend, when #3 child can help with the decorations (and yes, I will have to pre-count the chocolate baubles) - so this weekend it's just visiting friends with a very new baby, a Mother-in-laws 89th birthday, an evening Christmas party in Pimlico - and hopefully a little bit of Christmas card writing, whilst sampling this year's batch of Damson and Sloe gin....hic

  • Comment number 13.

Morning to bloggers one and all

Lady_S - good luck with the driving test

I didn't get any time to contribute to the 'punctuation' discussion but am a big fan of the Oxford comma. I don't like too many short sentences as I sometimes feel it makes the narrative very 'choppy'. I therefore find myself using commas and semi-colons (with the occassional full colon) quite a lot; the Oxford comma comes in very handy.

Now onto the serious business of ARFO. I will be braving the M1/M25 on my journey down to Sevenoaks this evening so expect to hear all of ARF (plus everything following it for hours and hours). Maybe I'll text in for a mensh....

Anway, I'm not ready for Christmas yet so I'll stick with the traditional rockin' choices (still female in order to break the 54 week drought):

I Love Rock and Roll - Joan Jett and the Blackhearts

    More later .....

  • Comment number 14.

#6 I thought the driving test was the SCARIEST thing I ever went through - having given birth to 3 children, that's got to be something.

I remember my legs shaking so much I had trouble pressing the pedals down - sorry, that's not helping, is it?

However, I did pass and it was on 21st December, so a lovely early Xmas pressie.

    Bon chance!

  • Comment number 15.

#6 you've gotta do better than this lady

it was literally five minutes from our house!

    Good morning,

    #6 Good luck M'Lady!

#12 Suzzzziiieee, My favourite holiday was October half term which was usually spent down in Hampshire with my favourite aunt who sadly is no longer with us. I am going to make my ARFO suggestion in memory of that aunt (even though I know it won't get played:

RABBIT RABBIT by Chas and Dave

    Love you Aunty Dollxxx

Off to yet another kids' Christmas party this morning.

    Have a good day.x

  • Comment number 17.

Top of the morning to you Simon (or is it Herman nowadays), team and party loving poppets!

We are back to clear blue sky and cool bright sunshine here in Surrey. Glad everyone survived the weather and I hope there isn't too much damage to roofs, gazebos and the like.

Thank you for the card Gazza, nice to see you up in the middle of the night again!

Good luck with the test Lady S, great song choice!!

TC - I used to love A Bit of a Do with David Jason and a whole host of other talented actors. I don't ever remember it being repeated - would love to see it again.

And to answer the question us Southerners do say we're having/going to 'a do' - so not just for those north of the watford gap ;-)

Autumn Gale good luck with your journey, you're travelling to my neck of the woods. I live about 20 minutes away from Sevenoaks just over the Kent border in Surrey.

So to the all important ARFO, think I'm going to stick rather than twist this week so my choice is ..

ONE WAY OR ANOTHER - BLONDIE

    Have a lovely Friday all.

  • Comment number 18.

I've been ruminating on what constitutes a 'pulsating' opener. So my nomination is...

LOVE IS A WONDERFUL COLOUR - The Icicle Works

    or

ALL TOGETHER NOW - The Farm (which also slightly introduces Xmas with its Christmas Day trenches reference)

  • Comment number 19.

Good Morning Simon NYM and Poppeteers

Good luck with the driving test Lady_S!

    My ARFO today is

When I Saw Her Standing There - The Beatles

Thank you. Now I really must get some work done today. I should be heading to Glasgow this afternoon for a meeting but seemingly the trains are a bit iffy and there is still a fair bit of debris on the motorway. Coupled with the fact, everytime I talk, the coughing and spluttering start - so my input would probably not be welcomed anyway. So that settles that then.

Have a good Friday everyone and

    catch you later

  • Comment number 20.

    Morning everyone

Thankfully the awful winds of yesterday have disappeared and other than the gazebo laying on its side, the only damage I can see is a couple of roof tiles laying on the path and my Lavatera has taken a battering. I hope Shona is also finding it much calmer today!

The English schools break up for their holidays quite early compared to the schools around here that don't break up until our Blog Party day, Thursday 22nd December, returning on 10th January... teachers are back on the 9th for an in-service day.

Simon, since it is now one year and two weeks since a female voice opened your Friday show.....

Morning all .. we too have a naked Christmas tree up, waiting to be decorated tonight .. due to various diary clashes the only time we could all be together to choose it was after work last night (it's a tradition that the Masters from Eastleigh accompany us to the same farm every year to selcect 'the chosen one') ..

So there we were, in our wet weather gear, with torches, choosing the right tree to come and live with us .. my boys are off to Australia for a year next September, and have agreed that this will be another Christmas memory to relive when they are on the beach in 2012 ..

My ARFO request is A LTTLE RESPECT by Erasure please .. have a fab Friday x

Suzie #12, what a lovely, cheerful upbeat post! Really put a smile on my face. Good luck with 'Crocodile Rock' - Mr B had it played when he got on the show as the first caller, but I think you're right - it's never been the ARFO.

My favourite holiday was always Autumn half term, as it usually coincided with my birthday!

    Hi Simon and everyone.

Really bad throat today...alright to work but quality of voice going downhill rapidly!!! Good job the blog communication does not require vocal skills!!

Driving tests? Good luck by the way to Lady S on yours, it can't go as bad as my 1st test...put it this way I didn't finish it as the examiner said " I am terminating this test in the interest of public safety" and made a sharp exit for the mile walk back to the testing centre!!! Incidently I passed 9 months later in July 1989 on the 3rd attempt!! ( 2nd attempt was completed with only 2 fails..a marked improvement!)

Anyway my ARFO for today is:

1, COME UP AND SEE ME MAKE ME SMILE - Steve Harley

    2. GENO - Dexys

    3. LIVING IN PARADISE - David Lee Roth

    Have a lovely weekend.

I am also very good at humming.

Good luck for the driving test, Lady Stormrider

Glad to hear that our Scottish bloggers survived (mostly) intact, from yesterdays windy weather. It was rather blowy here, at times, but I don't think we got it anywher near as bad as further North.

I liked the Christmas holidays as a child, but I think I prefered the Easter holidays, or spring bank, when the weather was better (well sometimes!)

Something pulsating for the ARFO, eh? I have a trio of disco tracks to offer...

My ARFO. I have to say, by lucky hap, I am in a particularly arfy mood today, and I would really like to hear the show open with a bit of lovely rock, perhaps something a bit punky, something along the lines of...

'Baby, I Love You' by The Ramones

  • Comment number 35.

#26 Deebee... I had wondered about it possibly being a private school after I had posted my message, but they still have longer holidays than the private schools up here because my friend's son is at Edinburgh Academy and he doesn't finish until the Wednesday before Christmas and a neighbour teaches at the Rudolf Steiner School in Edinburgh and she also doesn't finish until the Wednesday.

We don't put up our tree until around ten days before Christmas and a few weeks ago I won a 6-7ft tree in a local raffle and it will be delivered about ten days before Christmas so I hope it will have roots so that it can join another in the garden from a few years ago.

I hope all goes well for your test, Lady Stormrider!

I'm off to clean the downstairs windows and doors as they're looking distinctly grubby after yesterday's wind and rain because when it's very windy, we get salt air from the sea in the air so the windows are looking 'salty'!

#24 The Driver there is a most talented selection of band members on the blog, most definitely not including me, so a proper knees up is in the offing!

I passed my driving test on the first go and I always say it was because I was determined not to have any more lessons with my Instructor who I didn't really like. However afterwards I developed a real fear of driving. Living in London it was easier to get around without driving so I pretty much avoided it and only drove when I absolutely had to. I didn't even have a car and my then boyfriend did, so it was easy to let it slide completely. But life happens.. I moved, ditched the BF and needed an alternative to public transport. So I took a short refresher course with a lovely Instructor, bought a little car and have never looked back. Now I really enjoy driving but I still have moments (after 25+ years on the road) when I am in the car and think to myself..'wow, look at me I can really do this!' lol

Shona, you could really get used to this working from home lark, couldn't you? ;)

Mandy, hope your throat feels better soon.

Madchick, welcome back. Hope you had a lovely time in the Maldives :) (hmmm thinking how could you NOT have a lovely time in the Maldives .. jealous much.. me!)

Got some boring chores to go and sort so back later for some chat.

Just back from the garage with a shiny new tyre on Noggin, just the one needed!

Hopefully, I should be able to get up the 1 in 4s around here again now, instead of rally style driving, in an attempt to climb them! The tyre was still legal, but wouldn't make contact enough to gain any grip on the road, plus, the lanes around here are knee deep in mud and leaves, water etc....

For my ARF, I would love to hear an ELO track Simon.

*** Twilight *** would do very nicely. One can only hope :)

    PASSED FIRST TIME

Wahoo! Thanks to Rob my instructor and everybody at Heckmondwike Test Centre. Watch out DeeBee I'll hae to take my trailer test next to tow my boat! I had 6 minor errors - but because I was being careful in sleet & snow I was forgiven - the instructor's failed someone before on one of my so-called 'minor' errors. Off for a hot tea and a hob-nob

#73 #82 Florence Alan I sure am planning to have a great time then again it would be hard or even impossible to find anyone who didn't have a great time at an SD gig.

Florence I know what you mean about not playing any Saw Doctors on Radio2 the only one's to play Downtown have been Janice Long Hardeep Singh Kohli sits in for Aled on Good Morning Sunday and Paul O'Grady. There have been comments about this on the SD facebook wall as many people have said they have requested it.

  • Comment number 92.

Thanks Paul of Sheffield for the welcome - first (but hopefully not last) appearance here! You can't get any lower than Bob Dylan doing seasonal polkas, can you??

Fetive moods abound here (as I type, "Secret Santa" gifts are being opened in my workplace) so, as a backup choice, I also offer Brooooce, with his own unique take on Santa Claus Is Coming To Town...

Thanks to all the kind words as well as the cup cakes, KT - I shall have to make more this weekend & pass them round. I now feel like a fully-paid up member of Drive time now that I can drive.

    Hi Hoggydoggy - welcome along.

I think you're swimming against the tide with Christmas songs at this stage ........ although I stand to be proved wrong -as usual!

I'm actually quite surprised that Lord Ammo's got his tree up. I had him pegged for being a bit more of the "one week before" type.

#91 Johno.... you mentioned the non-playing of the fab SD's Downtown on Radio2, other than by Hardeep, Paul O'G and Janice, the latter having played it about six times, she has good taste and an extensive knowledge of music.

Had Terry Wogan still been on Breakfast radio, I'm sure he would have played it several times by now, but in a way, I'm 'blaming' Chris Evans for not having yet played it as he has banged on endlessly about the Military Wives' song for two weeks and plays it twice a day... and perhaps if he was to play Downtown, it might just be too popular with his many listeners!!!

Also he did say that up until this weekend, he has the exclusive right to play the Military Wives' song, but other DJs will be allowed to play it after this weekend.

I would have thought that had it not been for the MW's song, knowing that Petula Clark is 79-years old, he may well have been championing her to be the oldest (?) person to have a #1 record, but he's concentrating on the one he will take credit for popularising and getting to #1, as I think it will do and I hope it raises a lot of £s for charity.

Having said that, I do think it's unfair not to play other songs that would probably be popular and do well at this time of year. I like the Thames freezing over song that Simon plays but have not heard Chris Evans play it, as perhaps like the SD & Pet's song, it might just draw some attention away from his 'chosen' song!

I'm glad that the Irish radio statiions recognise a good/catchy song when they hear it and I hope it gets to number one for them as they are a brilliant band to see live and they clearly love what they do and love their audiences too!
