Well another crazy day

Simon Mayo|09:05 UK time, Wednesday, 26 October 2011

Ah there you are. Dark and stormy here (which if I remember right is a rather dangerous drink involving rum and bitter lemon) and no estate walking expected for a while. Feels like camping on a miserable weekend with nothing but instant soup for cheer. But no, it's a half term week, so silence in the house apart from yours truly rattling around with papers, grapefruit juice and keyboard tapping. A creative time, if only I could avoid the myriad temptations of on-line fun and games. The trouble is, it offers gems like this from the New York Times. The question their science team was asked is 'if an e-reader is loaded with thousands of books, does it gain in wait?' Now I've been asked similar questions by les enfants terribles in the past and always dismissed the suggestion as ridiculous. Well I was wrong. The answer is yes, though only just. The increase in weight is an atogram which is so tiny as to effectively unmeasurable but heavier it is. Trapped electrons have a higher energy than untrapped ones apparently and E=MC2 will explain the rest (don't ask). Anyway, that's why your bag seems heavier and you're more tired I reckon.

Enjoyed yesterday's show as it hurtled off the rails due the lateness of the mead-what a drink. Fermented honey-who could ask for more? Then Steve Earle who sounded great and as unstoppable as ever. Creative chaos.

Today it is Anthony Horowitz who has written "The House of Silk", the new Sherlock Holmes novel. Yes that's right, another adventure for the most famous detective in the world. Anthony has always been a huge fan of Holmes and I know is really thrilled to get this extraordinary job. Quite how you adapt your style to be faithful to the original, heaven-and presumably Anthony-only knows. He will explain more today. But let's do SHERLOCK HOLMES tunes anyway! There is so much to go at, your creative juices will be flowing already.

Have a magnificent and wholesome Wednesday, see you after 5

Is the little chap going to be one already? What day is his b'day?

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 26.

#17 Cutbushers - as has been said many a time in here - we merely suggest the songs - we don't 'own' them. Besides which, many of our prolific choon choosers choose them in direct messages to Simon in Twitter at the same time as we're posting in the blog. The more who suggest the same songs, the better. In my book anyway. Exclusivity doesn't really exist in this blog. lol.

    :^)

#20 MTF - sounds lovely! And am I correct on thinking there's a very special birthday occurring this weekend?

#19 Harry - I was thinking about Sherlock's 'reacreational substances' with Pipes of Peace but yours is better ... am sure there must be a song somewhere entitled 'Dear Stalker ..'

    ;^)

  • Comment number 27.

    Hi Katymaty.

Yup, an 18th on Friday. Me Laddo is finally going to be able to go out and sup his first pint (ahem!)

    Morning all

Very late to the party today - so no original suggestions from me, but given the title of the Blog, can I second/third, please:

    Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty

'Tis a beautiful day here after a dramatically stormy night; lots of thunder, lightening and power cuts!

    Back later

    Tortie x

PS Is anyone else having problems with the blog, or is it just me?

  • Comment number 29.

Yes Tortie, blog problems here too. Have to keep reloading to get to post.

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 30.

Hi Tortie - glad the weather has calmed down up there.

I am certainly finding the blog a bit unpredicable today, but I thought it was my dodgy laptop misbehaving.

FOR THOSE THAT MAY HAVE DIFFICULTY POSTING:

TRY PREVIEW - THEN POST - then if it looks as though it's thinking about it and the whirly thing is still whirling - REFRESH THE PAGE.

You may find that your post has appeared. Then again - all the above may be completely unhelpful ..

    :^/

  • Comment number 31.

#25 MTF, he'll be one on Friday. Time hasn't gone by quite as quickly as you're thinking, this is Grandson no. 1; I announced Grandson no. 2's birth in August.

#26 Katy, you’re correct, there is a song called “Dear Stalker” by the Amplifires (sic) ............... I’ve just had a quick listen on Sp*tify; starts off quite nicely but deteriorates once she starts singing.

  • Comment number 32.

#26 Hear, hear KatyMatey! I was going to post something in reply to someone's comment in yesterday's blog (can't remember who) who apologised for suggesting a song that had already been suggested by someone else. But you've summed it up nicely. Also, if only one person was 'allowed' to suggest each song, it would be rather unfair on the bloggers/tweeters/emailers who are unable to get online in the first 20 minutes after Simon's posted the theme...

Seems as though I missed a treat at work yesterday. We had a fire in our MRI suite - thankfully not a very serious one, but the firemen who turned up to deal with it had to de-metalise themselves before entering the facility. Which meant taking off most of their clothes, apparently...

    ;o)

  • Comment number 33.

#27 MTF - Heehee - it's such a very special birthday for SO many reasons. I will build a supersize cupcake and post it in here on ARFO day, then it'll be here all weekend for us to have a nibble x

#31 Harry - two grandsons - am guessing not actually from the same mother? Sorry if that sounds overtly biological. I know it's possible.

Altho' I was just savouring the play on words - thanks for finding that song 'Dear Stalker'. Can't listen on this contraption so will accept your opinion - anyone who requests Show Of Hands and Horslips on the same day has got to be a kindred spirit - and not bother.

    :^D

Madness here, less than one week before the HRH visit and the organisers have requested that the fold down seat she sits on in the lecture theatre is oiled as it squeaked when they tried it out....made me giggle. We didn't do the other 214 seats though, so with any luck there will be a cacophony of squeaking and she will sit smugly on her silent seat...

Morning from a cool dry Horsforth. A fantastic atmospheric Baskerville-esque mist rising up from the river around Kirkstall Abbey's ruins on my way in at 8am. If you remember they used it as a backdrop for a special outdoor televised version of 'Frankenstein' earlier this year. You cannot take a bad picture of it!

Anyway - special birthdays theme continues. Say hello to nephew No1 born at 12:45 this morning and weighing in at 7lb 10oz - mother & baby doing well (as are proud grandparents). He's already been named but he sounds like he is going to be 'Oor Willie' from now on. I am reet chuffed :-)

Has - WHO WERE YOU WITH IN THE MOONLIGHT? by DOLLAR - been suggested yet?

Do I detect a swagger as you type that word 'fecund' ? LOL

Reminds me of when I was researching my family name way back when - before t'interwebs.

Virtually the first paragraph informed that after reaching English shores "..the D-------- family settled mainly around Cheshire and were known for their fecundity"

  • Comment number 59.

Just for the record, we are not after a solo mensh, not trying to outdo anyone, and not considering owning any songs as such. Just want to come up with something original. In addition to the tunes we suggested, we also considered:

    Cocaine - Eric Clapton

Watching the Detectives - Elvis Costello

    Whodunnit - Tavares

Looking for Clues - Robert Palmer

Our main aim in all this is to get one or two of the more unusual tunes played, especially those that we wish to hear - though it is great to get some recognition along the way :o)

On a personal note, I would love to hear "Just the Two of Us" by Grover Washington Jr & Bill Withers played. I think it's an inspired choice.

    Cheers,

    Paul TMFM.

  • Comment number 60.

Okay, we'll lighten up a bit now folks :o)

  • Comment number 61.

Further to my #19 and #59 Cutbush Crew, of course Cocaine wasn't used by Sherlock Holmes as a recreational drug, he believed it enhanced his deductive powers. Therefore, we could go for another of his 'habits':

    GOLDEN BROWN by THE STRANGLERS

He used morphine and opium to give himself relief from his over-active mind.

If any kiddies have wandered in here by mistake from the CBeebies blog .............

    Just say, "NO!"

  • Comment number 62.

#50 Paul the man from Milton

Oh dear - hope we haven't got our lines crossed. By exclusivity I meant Exclusive SONG CHOICES. There was a time when the blog was full of apologies because several people 'missed' seeing other peoples choices, and duplications weren't exactly frowned upon, but some folks raised an eyebrow here and there.

Being a somewhat genial and self-regulatory bunch of enthusiasts, a soft warm blanket of tolerance was thrown over the proceedings with a tacit agreement to all pile in, whatever had gone before!

Menshes are different. They don't concern me - a well-documented fact throughout the last 20 months. LOL

  • Comment number 63.

Oooops - my last post reference should have been #59 for Paul and The Cutbush Crew.

Typo Central for me today - I seem to have scattered them through my various musings like nobody's business ...

  • Comment number 64.

And another of Sherlock Homes' 'habits':

    Afternoon All;

Get well soon JillyM, Jennie and Billie - We do seem to have a few poorly bloggers just lately :(

KatyMac - Hope your mum keeps making good progress, and is soon home with you :)

#62 - And there I was thinking you were trying out the sure-fire mensh formula this morning ;)

#57 Harry - Hope your grandson has a lovely 1st birthday & Yes, teh limericks do seem to have dried up, don't they? :-/ I wonder if I can summon up another one...I need inspiration though...Maybe I could have a go at a Kate Bush one, Simon's got a soft spot for her, hasn't he? *Goes to ponder rhymes for Bush...or Kate!*

    O.K, here goes....

There once was a songstress called Kate Bush

Who in her day, turned many young men's brains to mush

    Some called her singing screechy

But they though she was just peachy

And now she's a fondly remembered first crush

I think that one is my 4th entry, and as we are limited to 5, I hope it might get the ball rolling again for everyone else... I don't want to swamp the competition!

    PEACH CHUTNEY

    1 Tin Peaches – approx. 400g - diced

1 tablespoon of juice from the tin

    1 tablespoon each –

dried cumin, dried coriander, sultanas, whole black peppercorns

    3 tablespoons sugar

    5 tablespoons vinegar

    5 tablespoons water

Stir all ingredients together in a saucepan. Bring to the boil then simmer steadily until a jammy consistency. Pour into hot sterilised jars.

We found we could easily cope with 3x this amount - giving 6-8 small jars.

  • Comment number 76.

The donkey, Hootey, I've mentioned afore,

Re-appears in this rhyme. Yup, he is back, once more.

The reason he's here is to let you all know,

That he's named after D. Rucker, and his fishband that blow,

Thus enabling his consideration in the competition, as he was feeling that he might be left out, due to not meeting the criteria which was mentioned before.

That was rubbish, but at least I got Darius Rucker (from Hootie and the Blowfish) into a poem, without getting myself modded for an obvious potential misdrmeaner.

    This post - the 4th time I've tried submitting it - here's hoping ...

#52 LadyStorm - congrats on Auntiedom!

#53 Jennie - glad to hear Man With The Lamp is taking care of you. I also missed the ARFO - I'll update the tune itself on the ARFO list and post some time between now and Friday

#55 Sparky. Lucky you - James are great. An erstwhile Mayoblogger is also a great fan - Deevski's other half, NicRolastic. I think they caught the act in Brum the other night. Oh yes - special birthdays .... a cupcake for your 18-yr old poppet will also appear on Fri alongside MTF's new adult cupcake.

#56 Billie - sorry to see you're not feeling too good. Also meant to say the other day - re. your sore feet thing. My stepdaughter has been suffering exactly the same thing for the last couple of months. Spooky!

#66 .. catching up with Zoe.

Yes - I'm laughing at the mensh formula! I had pretty much the same list as everyone else and no real competition, so I managed to pop about 20 songs in here. Just because I could. I felt a bit dirty, mind

    ;^)

Yes, you've posted 4 Lims: Tom and Kate but also Matt and Sally from Drivetime.

    A LIMERICK

As the ARFO each Friday she’d ask

(It not being an onerous task)

For “The Beat” by The Look

    With its opening hook

But in glory she did not bask.

  • Comment number 80.

I'm supposed to write a limerick about a band or musician,

I've already tried Hootie and the Blowfish, an'

    That didn't really work.

    I am such a jerk,

I should have gone Wayne Hussey's 'The Mission'

I now feel doubly pleased with myself, having mentioned both Rucker and Hussey, without any descent into double entendre or somesuch. ;0)

    DARK SIDE OF THE MOON

US AND THEM ON THE RUN - SPEAK TO ME

BREATHE in TIME - it's BRAIN DAMAGE you see

    An ECLIPSE will belie

That GREAT GIG IN THE SKY

ANY COLOUR YOU LIKE - MONEY's free

  • Comment number 82.

It's been one of those days... that'll teach me to take time off.

Trying to catch up - Congrats to Auntie Stormrider, and a very happy birthday to Harry's grandson. Get well soon to Jennie, JillyM and Billie.

I'm afraid my one attempt at a limerick will probably be my only entry. Still, it's quality not quantity that counts...!

#66 #78 there's a mensh formula? Wish somebody had told me - I generally just throw a few likely song suggestions in to the pot and see what happens. Probably why I can never come up with more than about 5 or 6 at most... and that's on a good day!

    Peach Chutney @ #75

  • Comment number 84.

Man am I late to the blog or what ?

lol, hubbs is gonna kick himself when he gets home and realises what the subject was today (he was offered some extra hours this week at the shop).

Did I mention he writes Holmes scripts for the radio ? Of course I did (shut up woman, they dont want boring with this stuff) :-)

  • Comment number 85.

    Mmmm Chutney sounds yum !

Had I been here in time to choose a choon, id have gone with NEEDLES AND PINS - THE SEARCHERS, you know 9% solution and all that

  • Comment number 86.

    Hello poppets,

Well, what a lovely bunch you are ... thanks so much for all the well wishes and for the lovely card LuciesMum. I hope my fellow poorly blogsters, Jennie and Billie are feeling better (Billie your oxo moment sounded like the perfect feel better snack, felt jealous not to be able to have the same!)

Went down hill a bit yesterday and had to get an emergency doctors appointment (after being told the next regular appointment was on Friday!). Was having a lot of trouble breathing, so now have a pump inhaler thingy and lots of steroids (!!) to add to my hoard of antibiotics. And to think I just started with a bit of a head cold. Hey-ho!

So, having endless time to do nothing but wheeze and cough (can't sleep through the noise of the building works) I managed a weak attempt at a couple of limericks.

Seeing regular blogger John B Good (aka Misstra JGB) sneak back on here (good to see you) and also Brandon's choon choice today thought this might be appropriate ..

There was a young Wonder called Steve

Whose music was great I believe

    Although he did cause dismay

    With his lyrics one day

The word MISSTRA really did peeve!

And a blog based one rather than music/band etc. which might not count but just for the fun of it ...

This blog I discovered one day

And whilst working I do tend to play

    It's never too soon

    To suggest a good choon

And if menshed I come out with a YAY!

Well, that's me tired out. Just caught a few snippets of the show last night but hopefully will hear more today, some great tunes suggested, so looking forward to hearing a few fellow blogsters menshed.

Keep well out there folks and felicitations to all births and birthdays hereabouts... hopefully I will be well enough for some celebratory cakes on Friday!

    Jilly x

p.s. Deebee your Fireman story really made me smile :-)

  • Comment number 87.

    nice poem Jilly :-)

There once was a Manchester band called James

who with 'Sit Down' had oodles of fame

    Their fan base is huge

    But hit singles a scrooge

Who cares, they're my fave, is my claim!

Ok, this is my effort! a bit lame.......not quite getting over the emotion when Tim Booth sings 'Sometimes'!

Get better soon all the sick bloggers!

    Love Sparkyhunter

And there was me thinking only Ken Bruce played this song :-) !!

  • Comment number 91.

    Hellooooo

Inspired by a beautiful walk in the autumnal sunshine, here's my limerick:

There once was a singer called Elvis

    Who became allergic to shelllfish

    When eating the critters

    It gave him the jitters

Which wiggled and wiggled his pelvis!

  • Comment number 92.

Three word Wednesdy..... 'waves deep today' or something like that when I was down at the sea front with the hounds!

Harry Snapper's recommended book "Darker than the Deepest Sea" by Trevor Dann looked very appropriate today while I was out walking my dogs (see pic #92)!

It's strange to be listening when I haven't suggested anything!

The heavens have opened - was that thunder?

    Missed the menshes! Bums!

  • Comment number 95.

    #84 Gill - well, I'm impressed :^)

#83 Thanks Billie - have popped the Limerick into the LIMFILE. Also ta for recipe for peach chutney.

    My Anti-Recipe for the

SPICED APPLE CHUTNEY - that I mentioned yesterday.

Will be ready in time for Christmas giftage

Makes lots if you want - so if you do:

chop up LOTS OF COOKING APPLES

chop up EQUALLY LOTS OF ONIONS

Boil up LOTS OF VINEGAR - any colour. I used whatever I could lay my hands on

adding LOTS OF SUGAR - BROWN PREFERABLY but I added some white when I thought it needed more

Add DATES - about a third the amount of the apples and onions

SPICES TO SUIT - a bag of Pickling Spices hanging in the mix works well. Or a sachet or two of Mulled Wine Spices. Just add what you like. I also added some

FRESH GINGER [optional] and a few CHILI FLAKES [optional]

Cook it all together in a huge pan for quite a long time. Hours rather than minutes. Taste as you go along. The datesadd a natural sweetness as they melt and join it all together nicely.

It should be apply and sweet initially with a nice deep back kick of spiciness.

tee hee thanks KatyMac, it's an american radio series - rubbish rate for dollers at the mo though :-(

Lol, hubbs loves this song (who done it), but mostly because it mentions Ellery Queen one of his other favs :-)

  • Comment number 97.

Here's the link to the website for the group he writes for. He, writes quite a lot of things for them and has just released a book through 'kindle' to tie in with the Sherlock stories.
