Tin Hats At The Ready

Simon Mayo|08:47 UK time, Friday, 28 October 2011

Good morning to all. A cloudy dampness rules at the moment with a hint of sun for later.

It looks like it might be a weekend of Halloween related business. I'm not sure when it became such a juggernaut. Bonfire night was always the big one when I was at school and Halloween a mere curiosity. A few years ago we used to cringe when October 31st came around as our evening callers were not pleasant. It was essentially licence to terrorise the street. The knock on the door usually meant 2 or 3 lads in masks demanding sweets with a hint of menaces. Neighbours either cowered or pretended they were out. But in the last couple of years things seem to have improved. We've had more families and more smiley kids who have clearly enjoyed making an outfit and put some effort in. Maybe things are calming down and a tradition is adapting.

Although I loved the fireworks we had as a family, many bloggers will remember the jumping-jacks and bangers that were widely available and often ended up in exhaust pipes and letter boxes. Every November 5th had a catalogue of injuries reported on the news so the switch to organised events makes sense. And maybe two 'festivals' so close together will always battle for our attention with one losing out. And with the Americans not really in the Guy Fawkes camp, it'll be November 5th.

Maybe there's a hybrid event with ghosts and ghouls running the bonfire and apple-bobbing offered to house-callers. In the meantime, fangs are being made, cloaks dusted off and pumpkins hollowed out. This will then go mouldy, hang around too long and fold in on itself. And so a weekend of fireworks and fiends begins...

How great to have Rebecca back yesterday! The team reunited and all is well with the world. Particularly with all those new listeners around! Thanks for all the best wishes and congratulations yesterday. A pat on all our backs!

So the All Request Friday entices us into the weekend and here's yet another invitation to pick your toppermost song for the 5.05 moment. Go on, surprise us.

Have a sparkling and tantalising Friday, see you after 5.

    Jumping jacks, yikes!

They were terrifying and finally banned, quite rightly so.

Off to ponder over my ARF...

Good morning Simon, Team, NYM and blogpoppets. And a special "welcome back" to Rebecca. Hope Simon comes up trumps with some fab biscuits/cakes today ;-)

    ARFO:

Rip It Up And Start Again - Orange Juice

I know, it's not a "traditional" ARFO song but it would be fab to hear it.

LOL at MTF #1. Don't ponder too hard m'dear.

Yesterday was a bit of a disaster thanks to my own stupidity. Today hasn't got any better. Fingets crossed I shall be all refreshed and back to normal after my hols. Just got to get back to Aberdeen in one piece tomorrow ;-). Really looking forward to meeting Harry "the Breeze" Snapper.

Back for more chat later. Hope all good in blogpoppetland.

    ARFO

LOVE SHACK - B52S go on you know you want to do the impersonation of Kenneth Williams as you sing along to this (cos the lead guy looks like him).

Busy weekend, eldest daughter has stuff in art exhibition at a posh school miles away so that's Saturday then she is 18 on Sunday then away back up to halls for her same night laden down with cake for the flatmates....also need to cram in pumpkin carving (a vomiting pumpkin has been requested), birthday cake and lunch cooking and a Ron Weasly outfit for 15 year old daughter (she can manage that) as all her Ranger Guides are going to the Brownie Halloween part as the cast of Harry Potter - should be a hoot (a Hedwig kind), then the ironing and usual weekend catch up...!

We don't get many guisers as we live in a street which only has 7 houses in it so we usually just get the neighbours kids and that's it. This year my pumpkin is staying on the inside window cill as an eejit stole my Jack the Pumpkin King I lovingly carved last year and smashed it all over the road...it looked so cool too!

Hope everyone has a great weekend and poorly people are getting better.

loved the carbonara last night - had my mouth watering...must try that one!

    Love Sparkyhunter xx

PS have you got Rebecca a Val Doonican cd for Christmas!

How many points did Simon end up with in the quiz last night?

Fingets crossed for you Mo, doesn't it seem the way, that when one thing goes wrong, then other things seem to follow the same pattern?

How exciting for you and Harry to meet up. Harry, whats with the 'Breeze?' I know I am probably being thick, but thats me all over!

    Now back to my pondering...

    Morning All

#2 Hope you and The Breeze have a nice time Mo.

ARFO-----Bang Bang by BA Robertson, what with all the talk of fireworks n' stuff.

When I was younger and living at home in Hackney, all the youngsters from the estate used to build a big bonfire on Well St common and it was a real community effort. All the families would then take their own fireworks over and set them off. My poor mum had a jumping jack go up her skirt once! Luckily she was fine but always wore trousers after that!

    Have a good day everyone,

    Love Mrs B x

    Good Morning All :)

I don't mind all the Halloween stuff, much prefer it to the constant banging of fireworks at all hours, and Bonfire parties etc that seem to go on forever. Mind you we haven't heard so many fireworks this year, so far at any rate, maybe it's the credit crunch in action :-/

My ARFO request for today was going to be...

    THRILLER - MICHAEL JACKSON

But then I thought, maybe a little kid will ring in requesting that one, so I ran through a Halloween inspired playlist and was reminded of...

    FRENZY - SCREAMIN' JAY HAWKINS

But then I thought that one might be a bit obscure for some. Then I remembered a chat I'd had with a relative about music, and his favourite singer of all time. I know he would appreciate hearing this song, and so would I...

NO MORE MR NICE GUY - ALICE COOPER

Phew, I got there in the end :D

Have a fun filled Friday one and all xxx

Morning Blogpoppets one and all. I’ve just ridden in on Blackie – gosh it is cold, possibly for the final time this year. She had to be dragged out of a nice warm garage and took 5 goes to start. The ‘puter at home is still discombobulated, so I’m posting during a break from stamping the bits of paper.

As an ARFO tune how about:

CRAWLING FROM THE WRECKAGE – DAVE EDMUNDS

I’m not here on Monday as it’s the day of the funeral so a peaceful weekend to one and all. XXX

    Just a quick poop in.

I forgot to say - welcome back Rebecca!

I will definitely try the Carbonara, especially as it is without cream (much better IMHO!)

Good Morning All from the North Western tip of Essex, where the sun is shining and the sky a beautiful shade of blue.

So glad that Rebecca has recovered, although it was also great to hear 'part-time' Pauline and 'stand in' Steph.

Well I cannot believe that this tune is not on Katy's list of ARFO's. Fabulous track and one of Mr Madchicksters favourites:

CAN'T GET ENOUGH by BAD COMPANY

Off to the hospital later, to see the consultant about my poorly ear. Little bit anxious, but will be glad to get a diagnosis. Also I have a ten hour flight next month, off on my happy hols, so I need to make sure it will be ok for that.

Loved the show yesterday, some great blog mentions. And yes, MTF, I admit that I did Woo oooo oo oo along to Plastic B!

Have a great weekend all. Counting down to CiN....!:-)

    Hi Simon and everyone

I think the whole explosion of the Halloween celebrations stems from the USA again... it was them that gave us that stupid school system; eg year 1 to year 13! What's wrong with 1st to 5th year in the High School?!! And also they brought the idea of the Prom which causes parent stress and expense to outdo each other...what's wrong with shirt signing and being egg and flowered on the last day of school?!

As to fireworks never have and never will buy any ...except SPARKLERS, how fantastic are they?!!!

Anyway, maybe Katy can do a double cake for Deebee and myself as we are birthdaying tomorrow?

I will suggest a Halloween themed ARFO ..it is quite loud ...even if it does not get chosen I suspect it will be in many oldies lists on Monday if Simon chooses ..HALLOWEEN as a theme!

THERE'S A GHOST IN MY HOUSE - R Dene Taylor.

    Have a lovely day peeps.

    Mandy ;)

Hey Mo - hope today is a better day! x wave as you past my road end on the M74 if your driving.....I'm waving now.....

Happy birthday to Mandy and Deebee for this weekend - just got the jist from Mandy.

Lady Stormrider I am sorry I missed your sad news as I was not blogging for a few days but thougths are with you for Monday x

PLASTIC BERTRAND! forgot about him -me and the 15 year year old were po-go-ing around the kitchen, poor grandad did not know what was going on (even more than usual)!

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

Misty here early this morning, but the sun has now peeked through. I've been told that it's going to be nice tomorrow too :o)

My ARFO suggestion - I haven't heard this on the radio for a while:

LAYLA by Derek and the Dominoes (the full version, of course.)

would start my weekend off very well indeed.

I remember jumping-jacks, bangers, catherine wheels and Roman candles and it takes me back to the village I grew up in where Bonfire night was a huge bonfire on the village common when everyone gathered together and the bonfire was lit by a group of youngsters carrying 'torches' which were empty baked bean cans, stuffed with a paraffin rag fastened to the top of a pole followed by villagers letting off their fireworks for a couple of hours whilst eating bonfire toffee and various goodies.

One particular night has always stuck in my mind when everyone had their boxes of fireworks, but one girl, who was snooty and always had everything bigger and better than everyone else, arrived armed with a big biscuit tin crammed with fireworks and quite a few rocket and was bragging as usual!

It was't long bbefore a 'naughty boy' saw her tin of fireworks sitting on the wall while she moved to let off a rocket and he put a penny banger inside and ran off and the whole lot went up in an amazing display of cracks, bangs and whooshes, and I think the 'naughty boy' should really confess to Simon as she never found out who did it!!!!

    ARFO?

    FOCUS - HOCUS POCUS.

Fits in nicely with a Hallowe'en magic vibe too.

Mind you, if we get a Hallowe'en themed Drivetime on the 31st October (which seems a distinct possibility), bags I get to nominate this one on the day!

Off to buy a new (well, used) car this weekend. Joy...!

Good morning Simon, team and poppets all from a gradually brightening up Surrey.

Thinking that a corner may well have been turned overnight as I actually got some sleep and definitely feel a little brighter today. Didn't have to use my puffy inhaler thingy once during the night and although I'm still hacking away like a ninety year old who has smoked a hundred a day all her life I can see a light at the end of the tunnel.. hurrah! Thanks again for all the well wishes you lovely lot :-)

I am definitely in the Bonfire Night over Halloween camp - cannot even remember Halloween existing as a child (agree with Mandy, definitely an American import!) ... but Guy Fawkes night was always something special. In the build up we always used to make a Guy and sit it on the corner of the street. I am the youngest of six siblings and the day used to start out with us all enthusiastically calling 'penny for the guy' until one by one the older kids would wander off to more interesting pursuits and invariably I would be left holding the fort on my own until Mum came to rescue me. However as the youngest I always got the barest minority share of any takings!

Bangers and jumping jacks used to scare the life out of me as we always had the naughty kids chucking them around. I remember my dad nailing catherine wheels to the fence and burying bottles in the garden for the rockets. We always had sparklers and I know they are simple and some would say rather pathetic in today's world but they seemed magical to me then and even now I am still rather enchanted by twirling a thin stick and watching it flare and sparkle on a cold dark November night :-)

And so to pressing business ... Happy Birthday to MTF the younger and to Deebee and Mandy for tomorrow and Sparkyhunter for Sunday, hope you all have wonderful days.

Lady Stormrider - hope all goes as well as it can on Monday. Thinking of you.

And finally for my ARFO, a nice bit of Kelly Jones would make me feel much better for the weekend so ...

    DAKOTA - THE STEREOPHONICS

    please :-)

    Hello Everybodypeeps!

Rotten week at work but hoping with EVERYTHING crossed that things are about to change for the betterererer.

I think come Monday evening the occupants of ChezNic (that'll be me and him!) will pretend to be out, or will actually be out - maybe an evening swim/sauna. I don't mind the cute little ones painted up as black cats with whiskers, it's the bigger teens that clearly use Trickle Treating (see what I did there!) as a means to terrorise householders to hand over any sweetie stash one may be holding onto! There's nothing more scary than opening the door to a 14 year old dressed in a tracksuit, growling in a low pimply mumble "trick or treat" when you're trying to cook the tea!

As for fireworks, it's organised displays all the way for us, and isn't it lovely that Guy Fawkes Night actually falls on a Saturday this year. Must get some sparklers actually .....

Will think about ARF and pop back later.

Morning Simon , Team and fellow bloggers

For my now once a week visit to the blog for ARFO , although i did pop in early this week . I would again like to thank Simon for playing the very wonderful Common People by Pulp as the show openner on Monday's programme , it made Monday feel like a Friday and lossen those "Post Weekend Blues"

I have now decided as Pulp have been played , the song was always was more important than the mention it time to move on from my usual request.

After listening to the new Half Man Half Biscuit Album I could choice many of those fine tracks, any song with lyrics featuring swarfega or the fantasies of Glenda from Crossroads has got to be worth a play !

Being realist Half Man Half Biscuit seem never to be on the Radio 2 playlist , therefore are an unlikley ARFO .

So my new choice for ARFO is :-

    LITTLE SISTER - RY COODER

For those who don't know this fine song it's a rock and roll song written by Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman. It was originally released as a single in 1961 Elvis Presley, but the Ry Cooder version is far superior !

#24 LuciesMum - Mental as Anything, great choice. Esp with HRH and the PM down under today. That song reminds me of my gap year hitching round Oz. Happy Days.

#59 Lady SR and #60 MTF in my younger days I spent about 10 years and many cold November nights (thank goodness for thousands of lightbulbs to keep us warm) on those Carnival carts going through Bridgwater, North Petherton, Highbridge, Burnham, Wells, Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet and the last one at Weston.... some great nights of boozy fun had by all!

Mustn't forget also, every night for two weeks taking part in the Carnival Concerts on Bridgwater Town Hall stage in October, before the last rush to finish building the cart (traditionally called carts, not floats, because when the processions first started, farm carts were used, towed by tractors). MTF mentioned the squibbing, in which giant squibs were tied to coshes (like poles with a flat end to tie the squibs to) and in my days squibbing was done by every club having their own display in a competition, but in later years, all the clubs stood together in the high street for a simultaneous display.

When we got married, lots of our club members were dressed in that year's costumes and held up an archway of freshly painted squibbing coshes outside the church for us to walk through... happy days of Carnival!

#28 I've just realised I meant to request

ROCKIN IN THE FREE WORLD - NEIL YOUNG

at the end of my message, because 'Like A Hurricane' at 8 mins was too long for an ARFO

I guess it's too late now. I'll try again next week.

  • Comment number 67.

#64 Deebee, it's not dangerous as long as the squib coshes are held upright after being lit!!!

In the 'old days' of squibbing when clubs did it individually, every squib had to 'explode' at the same time at the end or points were lost, but as time went on, everyone stood together in the high street to do the squibbing and I'm not sure whether they bang loudly at the end like they used to (probably health and safety rules)!!!

Before the squibbing took place, all the clubs walked along from their pub headquarters carrying the coshes (as can be seen at the start of the clip) with the huge squibs tied to the flat end, then they are held down to the ground for lighting then held up all at the same time!

    Afternoon All :)

Happy Birthdays all round for Master MTF (for today), Miss Sparkyhunter (for Sunday), Deebee and Mandy (for tomorrow)

It's my step-dad's birthday today too, so many birthdays all at once! :D

Lady Stormrider - I hope Monday goes as well as it can ((hugs)) to you all.

KatyMac- What news on the limerick front? Have they been passed on to an independent adjudicator?

We received our local newsletter 'The Parish Natter' this morning, which was advertising the annual village Bonfire event on the local park/playing fields. It's free, and we can see it all from our back garden anyway, so no need to go and stand in a muddy field! The twins aren't all that keen on loud bangs, or crowds, anyway, but they do quite like to look at the light displays. As for Halloween, we don't have a letterbox, we have a separate postbox on the wall, so no fear of undesirable things coming into the house. We also have security lighting, and bolts on our gates, which we could use in the event of surly youths demanding money with menaces. To be honest, as we live on a cul-de-sac with only five houses on it, we don't tend to get much Trick or Treat traffic anyway.

Great stories, LuciesMum. Have to admit I am one of those who usually hides at Halloween. Was different when there were young kids I knew who lived round about. Seems to be a big deal here but will be en route to Israel on Monday. Can't see them celebrating it there!

As for fireworks, i was rudely awakened about 11ish on Tues night by one of the neighbours across the field having a fireworks display. Seems to happen quite a lot and they don't seem to worry what time they do it.

Glad the passport has been found, MTF. He'll be off to the pub tocelebrte then!

Hi to everyone else. Going to read back again.

Don't think Simon will play one of my ARFO suggestions "Don't Be Cruel" by Elbow Presley as SW has just played it. Ah well, at least I heard it.

MTF, Glad you found the passport. Young Master MTF can now enjoy his evening - and tell him to keep the passport safe tonight.

#71 heard that Shona. Great song though and worthhearing twice.

Ooh, clocks go back tomorrow. Apparently there is a bid to get the UK on Central Euro time. Can't see that going down well in the far reaches of certain bits of the country.

    Good luck for arfo.

I hope young Mr Tooth Fairy enjoys his night at the pub and doesn't lose his passport if he has one or two too many to drink! Seems silly expecting youngsters to carry a passport... surely there are other means of ID they could be issued with that is less valuable if it gets lost!

Pleasantly surprised to see Patrick Hernandez "Born to be Alive" has only been arfo once before. And quite a while ago. Well done to the chooser. Didn't catch the name but not a blogpoppet.

Wow Lucies Mum, you really do know all about 'carnival season.'

When the kids were little, we used to try and do the Taunton one. We would park at the top end of town, huge flask of Tomato soup (yes that one) and a big loaf of freshly baked homemade bread, still warm from the oven. Then would be able to exit town, before anyone else and get home at a reasonable time.

Shona, I hope your trip goes ok. I have got a friend who has myopia/nyctalopia? I dont think there is anything that you can do about it.

A lovely one it is too in West Somerset. The sky is tinged with pink hues. At least I think that is the right terminology.

Off to Exeter this morning with my Daughter. As one birthday passes, so another one looms. She has got her eye on a coat and would like my approval, or should that be purse?

Happy Birthday Deebee and Mandy I hope you both have a lovely weekend, is your Mum still with you Deebee?

Wishing all bloggers a great weekend too. Hope the airport run went ok Shona.

Right, best dig out my strongest walking boots, I have a feeling that its going to be quite some trek!!
