I was at work on September 11th 2001, and it was a very confusing and chaotic scene at first, and the panic spread everywhere with planes being grounded etc I remember that day very clearly.

I forgot the pleasantries - Good Morning each and everyone! I remember that day too - we were on holiday in Cornwall and on returning to our caravan we spent the whole day watching the terrible event unfold on the TV - very disturbing.

I was working in Local Government at the time and as soon as it was announced that it was a terror attack, we were all sent home immediately and the offices closed to the public. My drive home was some 20-25 minutes and I didn't see one single vehicle on the road from leaving the town I worked in, to arriving home.



I recall watching in horror as the day unfolded, 27/7 blanket news coverage adding to the disbelief of what was happening.



That day changed so much, and affected so many people in so many different ways on a global scale.



I will never forget it.

9/11 I was in Chesterfield for a meeting. As we finished one of the girls in the office told us that an aircraft had crashed into the tower. So I then had 2 and a half hours in the car back down to Hertfordshire listening to Simon's coverage.



Obviously an awful thing to have to broadcast but I think it was probably the making of 5 Live, which I hated at the start (including Simon's show) as I really liked the shows that preceeded Simon's arrival (i.e. Tomy Boyd and then John Inverdale in the afternoon slot on the old Radio 5) and also liked the old breakfast show on there as well. Grew to love Simon's show and was as unhappy at his departure as at his arrival. Which I guess is what makes radio station controllers' jobs difficult :-)

9/11 - Left work in the City of London at about 5pm. Was eager to know what was going on but couldn't get a copy of the Evening Standard anywhere. Jumped on a train and no one else had one either. Suddenly a young lad hopped on clutching a copy in one hand and a pasty in the other. My fellow travellers and I looked at him in anticipation... First he sat on the paper and took his time eating his pasty. When finally he picked the paper up we all craned our necks to try to see the headline - but our fellow traveller opened the paper and went straight to read his horoscope.

9/11 My day was mundane really - I was on holiday and was visiting the local refuse tip to get rid of a load of garden rubbish. When I returned my wife had the TV on and we just left everything else and watched the coverage on the BBC.



However, my friend Scott had a very lucky escape. He worked on the 98th floor for an investment bank, and on the previous day he decided to take the day off - no reason, just fancied a day off. 95% of his colleagues died....fate, eh?

Damn, a bloomin meeting has eaten away at my morning blogginess...would like to 2nd #64 Kate Bush, great oldie.



On 9/11 I was working as a civilian for Thames Valley Police and of course we had no radio (either on a PC, or even as a REAL stand-alone radio!) so got snatches of info from various ashen-faced people who shot in and out of the office with titbits, but it was only when I got home and saw the coverage that I realised how really really REALLY big a deal it was.



Even in just ten years, with the technological advances that have been made to phones, cameras etc I think there is a change to how we all see events unfolding, like the CNN coverage of the reporters hostage situation in Libya was gripping

Still can't beleive we have to wait 3 minutes to post again!



9/11 thoughts.



Like most people I was at work but on the day I was out at clients. I remember getting a phone call from my wife who had seen the pictures on TV. The clients immediately let me log onto the internet (I think this was the first time I thought it was a useful tool) and we watched what would have been still photos of the twin towers with planes hitting them.



Only one word to describe it, surreal! Even now seeing the footage and especially the excellent ITV documentary last week it is hard to believe it really happened.



I'm sure prayers for all those who were directly affected in any way will be offered in most places of worship this Sunday.

Like everyone else, I remember clearly the events of 9/11. Watching the TV pictures, not quite believing what I was seeing. I visited the site in April this year - New York is full of very tall buildings, and there's this gap like someone's knocked a tooth out. And the memorial site close by, with an eternal flame burning, is incredibly moving.



Really looking forward to Simon's tribute show on Saturday, although I'm hoping it will be on ithingy or podcast as I have a date with Sir Terry and some Prommers in Hyde Park.

9/11, I was having a lunch time pint with my boss and colleague and we looked up and saw on the tv the plane hitting one of the towers, like many others it was surreal and our first thoughts were of a really bad accident but then it dawned on us that it was planned. When we got back to the office for the rest of the afternoon we got updates on the web.

that day will always stay with me for all the wrong reasons along with when Princess Diana got killed in the car crash.

My 9/11 story:



I was on a business trip to the West coast of the USA. My hotel phone rang at 6.45am and it was my wife in London who told me to turn on the TV. Half asleep, we watched together in horror as both towers collapsed, knowing many friends in NYC having lived there some years before. The rest of the day was spent glued to the the TV, surrounded by distraught American colleagues, trying to make any sense of it all. It then took over a week to get a flight home, which involved an expensive taxi trip up to Canada, as US airspace was still closed. Boarding that flight in Vancouver was one of the scariest experiences. Everybody was scrutinising the other passengers’ faces, to see if they looked suspicious. At take-off, we knew our fate was now in somebody else’s hands. The whole flight was very quiet, only a few people slept. Every time there was a slight noise, faces turned to see what was happening. Many looks were exchanged between passengers. I know I was not the only male adult on the flight who looked into the eyes of similar men, with a knowing look that if anything were to erupt, we would need to work as a team. I have never been so grateful to see the grey buildings of Heathrow appearing the next morning.

I was in New York a month later on a trip to see the Breeders Cup which was at Belmont Park that year.



There were queues everywhere to get into buildings because of security checks - I popped into Madison Square Gardens on the off chance to see if there were any return tickets available for U2 who were playing on the Saturday night and I'd worked out that I'd be able to get back after racing in time for the show if they had any tickets.



I had to stand in a queue and get searched before they'd let me past the entrance foyer up to the ticket sale windows. Can you imagine having to be searched before popping into the box office at the Hammersmith Apollo? Although I suppose not many people buy tickets directly at the box office these days. Nipping down to the Reading Hexagon at 2am on a Sunday to queue for tickets to see U2 at Wembley stadium is consigned to history now.

#92, cant remember John Lennon or Jill Dando but I know its not the same circumstances but remember the day that Elvis died, my brother was/is a huge fan of Elvis and he was so upset. I am too young to remember JFK.

Clearly remember Diana's death as it was my youngest daughters 1st birthday and we switched the tv on at stupid o'clock and Sesame Street was not on....



9/11 as we sat dumbstruck watching the news that night, the same daughter, now age 5, ask us to stop watching it as it made her sad.... such an awful thing to have taken place.



For a son I think it may have already been done

eldest daughter had good day yesterday - met rest of first years in the studios where they had an exhibition of their work and found people whom she had been at other interviews with, they retired to the Union after, she then shared tea with a housemate, then a ceilidh in the evening with housemates and new friends. I got a 'ceilidh was really good, big smiley face text' last night - made my evening.
