Nobody on the road, nobody on the beach...

Simon Mayo|08:49 UK time, Wednesday, 31 August 2011

Well that was a little better. A relatively normal night, with most of it spent in the land of nod I am glad to report. I had started to wonder if every night was going to be spent, fruitlessly, counting backwards from 500 in twos. Or other routines vaguely remembered over the years. Anyway, a hot bath and my own bed did the trick. Oh yes, and a night out with the Drivetime team helped. Nigel had found a quite wicked Mexican restaurant and we ate and ate as more and more extraordinary dishes arrived. Then some aged tequila arrived and sat imperiously at the head of the table. Apparently it was great but your host felt that a tequila-fuelled sleep was no help in the long run. That, and driving home. So it was left to the rest of the team to do it justice. The great thing about eating with Nigel is that he orders for everybody and you just take what arrives. I'm thinking of asking him to move in with us.

And wasn't Ryan Adams wonderful? Quiet, thoughtful and wonderful tunes. His Iron Maiden cover was terrific-even the Maiden fans said so. It sets up the End of Summer Mosh today so hold on to your air-guitar (doubtful bloggers can take refuge in the knowledge that our mosh-spectaculars will rest till Christmas).

And on the oldies, I think we should do the END OF SUMMER/END OF HOLIDAYS theme which some of you were blogging about anyway. Last day of August seems the right time to me, so lets serenade the end of summer with some great tunes.

Have an inspiring and reassuring Wednesday, see you after 5.

Glad you had a good night in the land of nod Simon, I, on the other hand, got slapped in the face and rudely awoken by my mister at 4am as he thrashed around in his sleep! :( I know have a bad back and a stiff neck!! Maybe I should just give up on sleep altogether!

I flatly refuse to accept that the summer is over. You can almost guarantee, that the day the kids go back, that the sun will come out and we will have a couple of weeks of glorious weather, it happens every year.

Mind you, having said that, I am thinking of getting the thicker duvet ( which has only just been put away!) back out. Was a tad chilly in bed last night.

Right, I am now paying the price, for taking four days off and have a lawn full of apples to contend with. Strangely enough, there still seems to be the same amount still in the tree.

Ken - thank you X 2. For the Ryan Adams clip. And for reminding me that the Bill Nighy drama was called 'Page eight'. I agree - there's really not enough of him on our screens, a very fine actor indeed.

Shona - re the eye thingy phone. I agree it's very sensitive - when I first got mine I kept accidentally sending texts before I'd finished writing them, so the recipients would get half a message. Still do it occasionally, actually. I love it though - thinking of getting an upgrade when the new one comes out.

#43 It was nice to watch something on the box that wasn't afraid to use a well-written, intelligent script.

One review I read suggested it was well-written and performed but the story perhaps lacked something.

I didn't really agree with the last bit, but even if I had I would still have loved it for the fact that for 100 glorious minutes of superb, witty and clever dialogue we weren't all treated as if our attention spans can't last more than 5 minutes (Flog-it, art gallery/flogging shows hosted by Chris Hollins, etc. etc. etc. ad-infinitum please take note).

  • Comment number 47.

I'm in danger of bursting here. How do you stop yourself from laughing out loud when a very refined, older lady picks up a book called "Popular Poultry Breeds" and then turns to her husband and says, "Oooooo, that's just like Cecil's cock".

    Honestly, it has just happened!!!!

Hi all. Know what you mean about lack of sleep- the three worder of the day has to be "awake all night" for a number of reasons, mainly trivial. In the spirit of the end of summer then, Why not try "Forever Autumn" from Justin Hayward, a defiant" And I am telling You I'm not Going" by Jeniffer HOLLIDAY, no one else.Or, Housemartins "I Smell Winter" or, one of the greatest records of this or any other era,"Changes" by David Bowie.

Welcome back Tortie - how was France?

We watched 'The boy in the striped pyjamas' last night. Amazing film! It's a fairly well known film/book, but for those that don't know it's about a young German boy who's father becomes the Kommandant of a Jewish 'work camp', and the boy befriends a boy in the camp by talking to him across the perimiter fence. I won't say how it ends, but it was quite harrowing and not what I'd expected at all. Mr B and I just sat there stunned, while the credits rolled. I think as well that having been to the holocaust museum in Jerusalem earlier this year, I got more of an insight into what it must have been like.

It will be news to no-one that this Summer has been the coldest one we've had for almost 20 years https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2011/08/31/uk-weather-this-summer-se_n_942882.html

It hasn't really bothered me that much, because I'm not one for heat, and it's been mainly dry here, in fact our lawn is looking the worse for the lack of rainfall :(

Still haven't got everything the twins need for starting back at school either *rolls eyes* 6 weeks holidays, and I have to leave it all until the last minute as usual!

    ;o)

I like the thought of the Drivetime team going out for the evening together. Do you suppose they take their partners with them? Or is it like any work-based outing, with the colleagues talking shop and the plus ones feeling a bit like spare parts, not really knowing what to say to each other and trying desperately to find some common ground...?

#82 that last sentence makes a bit more sense if the word 'or' is replaced by 'and'...

#82 It sounded like a work jolly to me! Maybe the tequila might not have been flowing so freely, if their other half's had been around to cast them a disapproving eye ;)

    Afternoon everyone.

#47 Harry, that made me burst out laughing - thankfully I'm at home now. You couldn't make it up, could you! V Funny.

#67 Deebee, I read the book before I saw the film. The book is such a quick and easy read. Written like an 8 year old boy but def not for 8 year old children!

#75 Sadly Duncan, I suggested that song earlier - brain lacking a bit and it was one of a few I could think of at the time.

All of a sudden, nearly pitch black here. Ready for a downpour. Will wait until after 5.20 before I go swimming with the dogs - hopefully no rabbits in our wake!

Here we go with the show

    Good luck everybody
