I'm just popping out...

Simon Mayo|08:05 UK time, Friday, 29 July 2011

...and I may be a while. Well 3 weeks anyway. Holiday beckons. Compulsory family fun is on the way. The children won't argue, the travel plans will work, we won't need the insurance, no one will be ill, I'll read all my books, and no one will tell me I'm no fun. Oh, and no strikes. Or military coups/financial meltdown/outbreaks of bird flu. Is that everything covered? Probably not but it'll do for now.

The blog stays up and running for 10 days apparently. This will need brief holiday mini-blogs from me very now and again so everything can shuffle along nicely. Hope that works.

Busy final Friday with the movie show on 5 Live talking to Bradley Cooper, star of the Hangover films and Limitless and then a summery, holiday -strewn All Request Friday. Even if it's a little on the cloudy side, the temperatures are on the climb apparently and all is set fair. That song idea of yours might be a good one you know. The ARF crown can be yours to treasure for a while, just think of a little belter and pop it down below (meaning post it on the blog rather than any other connotation).

Be nice to Liza and I shall return refreshed, rejuvinated and full of chips on the 22nd.

Have a really rather relaxing and satisfying Friday, see you after 5.

    Morning All

Good week this week , after spending last weekend in Northern Ireland , which i must say it is a wonderful part of the world and then Simon playing the marvious “People Get Ready “ by The Impressions on the Olympic theme day.

My good mood was furthe improved during the drive into work this morning by hearing two great British pop songs bridging Vanessa and Chris’s shows , these being “It Friday , I’m in Love” and “Cars and Girls”.

Anyway another Friday and a week off after today , the only black spot being trying to complete all my paperwork for the month end and then try to leave things originised for other to cope with my during week off !

As for my request for ARFO it is as usaul another great British pop song :-

    COMMOM PEOPLE – PULP

it seems very lonely here !!!

  • Comment number 3.

Hi Andy... (and hello to anyone else who pops in while I'm thinking of a song) I'm here as well!

Nice of Simon to sort out the blog, to update us with brief holiday mini-blogs!!! I'm not sure whether to go for a holiday type ARF today or not, but I may as well include one for Simon and Rebecca's holiday

    SUMMER HOLIDAY ~ Cliff Richard

BORN TO BE WILD ~ Steppenwolf

Have a great holiday everyone who's off next week!

    xx

  • Comment number 6.

Morning Andy, Luciesmum, Tortie :-) hope everybody goes well today.

I've never been to Northern Ireland, nor indeed the Irish Republic. Should address this sometime soon.

May everybody's Friday be merry and bright, and can I just pop an ARFO down here:

Queen and David Bowie - Under Pressure

    Deasant Play

    MP

  • Comment number 7.

    Hi Andy,

You are not alone, I'm here too, albeit briefly!

Simon, have a great holiday. How can they say you are not 'fun'? You always sound as if you are having great fun on the Drivetime show, and that is one of the reasons it is such a success. Children can be so cruel sometimes! ;-)

Anyway, I am going to request two of my favourite tunes. I do hope that you and the NNYM give them some thought and consideration. Like MTF, I have never been

lucky enough to wear that elusive ARF crown. (Mind you I must admit I don't look good in hats!)

    Please consider:

LIGHT MY FIRE by THE DOORS (a fab song to drive home to)

    or:

EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD by TEARS FOR FEARS (because it is just great!)

    Have a great weekend all,

I also forgot to wish holiday-goers a wonderful time, so will do so here.

That should keep him busy til I pick him at 4.30 as he has a private lesson at 5 then we had kids sparring at 6 and then our session sparring at 7! Morning LuciesMum , Shona_W , Malcolm_Powder , madchick , Tortie-cat, and any one else who is now on line

Malcolm , you will not regret going to Ireland , accept that last time i was in Dublin Guinness was 5 Euros a pint ! it a lot cheaper in the north ! about £2.30 in a Belfast bar last week end.

#11 noted Andy - it's on the list of places to go at some point. Got a few friends over there, so visits will be in order some time.

    Good Morning Bloggers All

Happy Holidays to Simon & Family and to all other holidaymakers.

    Please may I request

THE BEAT - by The Look ?

A wall of sound from the beginning.

It is the most rhythmicallyinspiringsteeringwheelanddashboardthumping song from the very first second to the very last..

    AND – as I’ve said before –

IF IT WASN’T FOR THE BEAT – THERE WOULD BE NO MUSIC AT ALL!

    Thanking you

  • Comment number 18.

    Good morning, good morning.

Very grey here on the West Somerset coast, but hey ho, what can you do?

Have a great holiday Simon and enjoy yourselves. The idea of pooping in with a mid hols blog is such a thoughtful one.

    For my ARF......

    *** Twilight *** by ELO.

Like MCW not really a hat type person, but would be willing to give it a go.

Pity Lisa cant drop by on the blog from time to time, I think she might enjoy some of our discussions.

Right then, thats me, off to pick the first plums, a huge variety called Edward! Its a bit of a battle trying to beat the blackbirds to them, so must look sharp.

    Bring on the weekend :)

    Morning all

Nice to hear about everybody's holiday plans - and very good of his Lordship to be so considerate of our blogging needs in the coming weeks. You are indeed a top dude.

For today's ARFO, I give you:

SINCE YOU BEEN GONE - Rainbow

    SHE'S NOT THERE - Santana

DO ANYTHING YOU WANNA DO - Eddie and the Hotrods

    and of course...

JOHNNY BE GOOD - Chuck Berry

Good Friday to one and all.

  • Comment number 20.

We would really like to hear 'Ace Of Spades' by Motörhead. Thank you Simon and have a great holiday.

  • Comment number 21.

    Morning all,

And especially the escapees - I'll be away week after next, then again the week the DT dude gets back - PANTS!

#1: I stayed with a friend in NI in Coleraine, he took me to Portrush beach, Portstewart, Bushmills (best Guiness ever) and of course the Giant's Causeway, where his ancestors used to ply the tourists with 'invigorating waters' in the 19thC...till they were turfed out as Charlatans.

As regards the ARFO, I like to stick to one, or at very most two of my very favourite tub-thumpers and I know that traditionally, following a mensh, (as I had last night- touches forelock in deferential way), it's polite to take a back seat - but this is the LAST shot at the ARFO crown for me, let me see, for four weeks!

So going to give it my bestest shot:

    DANDY WARHOLS: BOHEMIAN LIKE YOU

    OR

I LOVE ROCK AND ROLL: JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS

(because clearly, we do or we would be listening to another station/programme!)

Have a lovely weekend, y'all - and especially those who are hitting the roads/skies/seas - hope your travel is smooth and your holidays are a tonic.

  • Comment number 22.

    Morning!!

#17 I like that one too Billie!!

    ARF idea

  • Comment number 23.

#22 THINK WE DO NEED AN EDIT BUTTON

As I was going to say

VIEW TO A KILL- Duran Duran.

have a good day each and nice hols those that are going away today & over the weekend.

    Mrs B x

  • Comment number 24.

#18 MTF: you never know, it could be ELO's week!

Don't forget they are played on BBC R6, so it's not like the BBC have banned them, or anything!

Re picking plums - isn't everything early this year?!

The dratted birds have pecked away at our 'bumper' crop of pears (by which I mean 7, 4 up on last year) which are now rotting on the tree.

Anyone know how many bunches of grapes it might take to make a bottle of wine? Our vine is particularly fecund this year - and we might give it a go, James May stylee, with a plastic bucket and some eager feet!

  • Comment number 25.

Hi Suzie, fortunately I cope very well with disappointment :) Really must check out this R6 at some point.

The blackbirds have taken a lot of my figs too, even with a protective fleece style cover, they just go under it.

Can someone request MUSIC TO WATCH GIRLS BY -ANDY WILLIAMS.

My money so far, is on KEV. Sounds like the kind of rocking good tune that will kick the weekend off.

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 26.

I've just realised, when I'll only have 3 days with Simon before I go on my hols again - must work on my timing!

    T xx

  • Comment number 27.

Morning one and all. Ditto ditto ditto to all of the lovely warm wishes sent over the blog this morning. As the majority are abaout to go on holiday my suggestion for the ARF crown is:

BORN TO BE WILD - STEPPENWOLF

.......get your motor running..........head out on the highway.........

Mr Dougal would like his suggestion to be (again)

    GET IT ON - T.REX

Warm wishes for a safe and satisfying Friday.

    Dougal x

  • Comment number 28.

    #23, ooooh what a tune!!!

I will also go for Duran Duran - VIEW TO A KILL or another James Bond classic by Carly Simon - NOBODY DOES IT BETTER., or even LIVE & LET DIE by Wings., I feel a theme for my Friday is set - hurrah!

    Happy holidays to all!

    Squiffless x

  • Comment number 29.

    Good Morning all

    Have a great holiday Simon.

Suggestion for the start of todays show and for your 3 week break:-

HOLD ON I'M COMING - SAM & DAVE

  • Comment number 30.

Morning all :-) happy holiday Mr M, already had mine but fingers crossed may get a sneaky second after eldest GD's wedding...yikes only 9 days to go!

....useless info the drummer with The Motors was from The Shire too Bram Tchaiovshy (just plain Pete Bramall back then!)

THIRD FINGER LEFT HAND MARTHA REEVES & THE VANDELLAS

Sorry Simon and other holiday makers. I forgot to wish you a nice holiday earlier!

Have a nice holiday one and all!

  • Comment number 32.

    Good Morning All :)

Firstly, may I wish all those departing on their holidays, a Bon Voyage! May you all have lovely weather and great times, and return to us safe and sound at the end of it all :)

I have 3, yes 3 (I'm greedy like that!) ARFO suggestions...

DON'T LEAVE ME THIS WAY - THE COMMUNARDS

THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT - TIGHT FIT

    ROCK ME AMADEUS - FALCO

All because well, I'm in an 80s cheese mood today, and the first choice is for those off on their hols...Don't leave me this way! :(

Seriously, I shall miss you all, but as I'll probably be up to my neck in twin shenanigans for the next 5 weeks, I dare say i won't get that much time to blog anyway.

How lovely of Simon to think of blogging on his hols though, to keep the home fires burning, so to speak! And of course, that is why we love him so, and will miss him whilst he is away. But the break is well deserved, and I have noted that Mr Mayo isn't one of those DJs who is always off on holiday at the drop of a hat *cough* *mutter* unlike some!

Hope everyone has a fabulous Friday and a super spiffing weekend! xxxx

  • Comment number 33.

Top Dude Simon! Hope your family appreciate you as much as we do.

Looking forward to your occasional 'holiblogs' - perhaps you can drop in a clue and then we can guess where you are at that time?

You know me - any excuse for a quiz or brain teaser

    :^)

Dear friends of the Mayoblog - congratulations on all the fine menshness this week - and enthusiastic Bon Voyages to all those who are vacationing and staycationing over the next few weeks ...

... this blog was magnificent in all its creative self-generation during Simon's summer break last year and set the bar with many fascinating, illuminating and OK ... downright silly - long-running threads. Good Morning All - oops, it's nearly afternoon!

Simon, it would be lovely if you could give us the occasional holiday blog. Maybe you could write it postcard style, along the lines of 'Weather's lovely, wish you were here'.

Trying to get everything done this morning so I can leave work at lunchtime to start my own holidays, which is why I wasn't around earlier.

So, for that all important ARFO request - how about:

NUTBUSH CITY LIMITS by Tina Turner

Or of course there's always the brilliant:

SOMETHING ABOUT YOU by Level 42

I'll try and poop by later.

    Deebee ~X~

  • Comment number 35.

    Yes - it's me again.

Did I mention that, during my travels, I managed to get my dongle to work on my netbook - the netbook that has my Mayoblog File with all the hats and cakes and scarfs and b'day banners and little flourishes and blogpics and lists I've designed over the last 18 months ...?

My bids for the ARF Opener Crown - ARFOC doesn't really work if you say it out loud - are:

SUMMER IN THE CITY - LOVIN SPOONFUL

Hmmmm, midday count up tells me only 41 and a half requests so far.

    Anyone done a roll call?

Katymaty, whats your weather doing up there?

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 37.

#11 Wharfedale Andy... you mentioned that Guinness is cheaper in the north and having worked behind the bar in the West Country, Cheshire and Largs in Ayrshire, I learned that prices do vary between north and south for pints! This set me wondering about the price of fish and chip prices around the UK!

Where I live, the last fish and chips I bought about six weeks ago, were £5.50 each and seem to have been that price for some time (so the guy told me when I said "how much") - since if we get them, hubby usually goes out for them!

Yet a while back when we were in East Anglia visiting my sister-in-law, we got fish and chips when we were out walking and they were only £2.75 and some time back when we were in Newcastle they were £3, so the other day at work we were chatting about the price of fish and chips (or fish suppers as they call them up north) and wonder why there seems to be such a variation in the cost of them!!

What do they cost where bloggers live (that is if any of you buy them now and again)? I think £5.50 is a rip-off, and must cost a fortune to feed a large family on holiday or whenever!

    x

  • Comment number 38.

#36 MTF - how can we have half a request?

  • Comment number 39.

    Morning all

Not enough Moody/Marsden era (proper) Whitesnake on the radio. So how about for today's ARFO:

    "Don't Break My Heart Again"

Saw a later incarnation of them at Wembley (all American guitarists and big hair) and hated it. Really would have loved to have seen them at Hammersmith early on.

  • Comment number 40.

    Tortie # 25...

Half hoped that someone might follow it up.

Anyway, whatever happens, lets hope that one of our bloggers is sporting the crown, for us to admire for the next coupla weeks. Where is it at the moment?

#30 Posh sould lady - you say you daughter is getting married tomorrow.....Hmmm Maybe as a loyal subject, Marm I should curtsey & wish Zara and Mike all the best!!! :-)

Anyway my ARFO is a surfing song as I'm off sailing & surfing this weekend:

BEACH BOYS - WOULDN'T IT BE NICE

Happy holibobs every one of us!

  • Comment number 43.

Hi everyone. This weeks ARFO: I guarantee that if the following song is played, you will have thousands of people in a wrung out, emotionally floored mess, all deliriously happy with a definite "What in the name of.......Just happened?" dopey grin on their face. I know, it happens every single time I hear it. it is....

And I'm telling you I'm not going- By JENNIFER HOLLIDAY. Accept no substitutes, (particularly Jennifer Hudson....Doesn't even come close. )This performance is nothing short of sensational.

  • Comment number 46.

    Good afternoon one and all,

Hope everyone who’s pegging it away on holiday has a wonderful time – remember Edina’s mantra in Ab Fab: ‘Money, keys, passport… money, keys, passport…’

Whilst I’m staying firmly put in Robin Hood county for the foreseeable future, I will be having a taste of the exotic this evening as I’m cooking a Middle Eastern mezze for friends for dinner tonight. Will be using aubergines I’ve grown myself, don’t ya know. I’ve spent a fair bit of time diving in the Red Sea over the years and love the local Egyptian cuisine; you can’t go wrong with a good falafel I always say.

Anyways, I’d like to suggest two songs for the ARFO this week – probably far too late now but here they are anyway:

Give Me Some Lovin’ – Spencer Davis Group

Slightly holiday inspired with the line “So glad we made it!”

Night Boat to Cairo - Madness

Inspired by many great days and nights in Egypt and my culinary exploits this evening.

Have fun on your holibobs people – and don’t forget the sunscreen. :-)

#27 Dougal... you and I (#3) have both chosen Steppenwolf's Born To Be Wild for our ARF today, so on the rare (highly unlikely) chance of it being played, would we get an ARF crown each, or is there just the one? Has it ever happened that two people have shared the ARF tune?

A belated well done from me Nadine - heard your request and smiled wildly.

I will also check out how much a "fush supper" costs here. I think around £4.75?

Also, I said that the weather wasn't good here this morning but just want you to know that if Toots made it up the motorway, she was heading into the warmest, sunniest weather in Scotland!

What a blast in the afternoon!

We don't actually sell "fush" in Scotand. I meant "fish"

    Night night!

    Happy weekend

    Evening all,

Not been around much this week, but heard the start of the show, heard the ARFO, heard the mensh, and well done to Nadine for keeping the bloggers on top.

Fish 'n' chips is around a fiver in these parts. But a special small portion can be had for £2.75 which is better for your wallet, your waistline, and for avoiding that bloated "seemed like a good idea but now I'm not so sure" feeling.

Have a nice weekend all, and hope the weather behaves better than the cruddy greyness and dampness we've had today.

All polished and shiny - the ARFO Crown for Nadine_C!

Well ... it resembles a crown on some servers ... but not all - so if you're receiving a mish-mash- never fear, the thought was here

    #80 Hi Shona!

...and yet - if you say 'fush' rather than 'fish' - it sounds Scottish. Try it out loud and you'll see what I mean.

[Trust me - I married a Scot - which is where the Mac part of KatyMac comes from]

    Yikes!!

Paul, you made me jump out of my skin.

Nadine, whoop whoop, was coming back through Wellington at the time. Great choice, hope evening is going well.

Another ELO second song, ho hum, actually was really pleased to hear it again.

Dark here, but didn't really get light today.

Have booked a decent weekend for everyone. Nice to share eh?

    Hello All,

Well done Nadine, and good luck with your evening gave a big cheer stuck in a jam outside Chichester,

Simon, thanks for another good week of shows. Hope you and all the family have a great holiday.

Thanks also for letting us know about the mini holiblog, its very nice of you to think of it

Yikes, spare a thought for the poor blog moderators who have been deeply dropped in the brown smelly stuff by their lords and masters today.

In finest political style the Beeb sent their Head of F1 over the ramparts to try to justify the F1 decision, after the Director of Sport had already ill-advisedly proclaimed this as a great deal for everybody using the "we want to be at the heart of the national events" argument they've consistently used to justify their sharply reducing live sport portfolio.

He was like a lamb to the slaughter. Comment count 2283 and counting - on a pre-moderated forum!

For some reason, I often get the 88 post!!

Nice to see you Brandon. I missed all the holiday traffic that poor Sally was reporting on.

Been a very quiet week for people needing teeth.

    Evening all.

    A very quick drop in...

I love glamping in our garden. Down comes the kingsize vi spring mattress and all necessary comforts.

Its a lot of fun roughing it when the kids are tiny, but I think you reach a certain time in life, when you need a better bed to lie in, so to speak.

To wake up to the sound of the birds singing and the tide lapping in, priceless.

    Have a lovely weekend all.

    Good Morning All

Finally got to Mum's at 7.30, having left home at 3. The only up side was we were able to listen to the whole of Simon's last show for a while. Will miss him.

A bit overcast here this morning, but it's supposed to be brightening up later and the wedding isn't till 2.30. Fingets crossed.

Had a surprised phone call just before we left home yesterday, from a pal I used to work with BC - we kept in touch when our children were small but sort of lost touch when I went back to work and she didn't. I haven't seen or heard anything of her for about 10 years. It was lovely to hear from her, and I was only sorry I couldn't chat for longer. We're going to meet up when I get back from my hols.

I'll try and poop by now and then over the next week. I've got my laptop and I think there's free wifi in the hotel we're going to be staying in.

Hope everybody has a good weekend.

    Afternoon everyone!

Once again, apologies for absence. Welcome to bloggers new, and big congrats to NadineC!

New job starts Monday. Initially a 3 month contract but could go on for 18 months. It is with a well known bank with a black horse and I suspect their internet security will preclude blogging. I will pop in whenever I can but I may be an absentee blogger for a while.

In other news, house still not sold. Big blue cat is wearing a big blue satellite dish and seems to making a good recovery. Stitches (30 of them, bless her) come out next Friday. Bloods showed indication of malignancy but we will cross our fingets. She is only 6 years old and I am not prepared to lose her. All else in our world is good, except that I am missing you all hugely.

Hope everyone is well, enjoying the sunshine and being good. Happy holidays to all!

    Good Morning All

A special hi to Alex_G - lovely to 'see' you, and congrats on the job! Fingets crossed for the house move and your gawjus mogpoppet. X

The wedding yesterday was lovely. Possibly one of the poshest I've been to - the service was held in the choir stalls at Salisbury Cathedral, an amazing setting. The acoustics were fantastic, and as some of you know I love to sing! The bride looked lovely (it's a rule) - her dress was ivory, fairly plain and straight, sort of 1920s style. And the sun came out as we left the cathedral. The reception was held at the bride's parents' home, in a big marquee on their lawn. There was an 18 piece jazz/swing band and a disco. They cut the cake outside at about 9.30, to the accompaniment of fireworks. Oh, and I have to mention the 'facilities' - because there were about 150 guests they'd hired a portaloo. And in keeping with the rest of the wedding, that was fairly posh too!

The holiday proper starts today - off to Shropshire for some ancester digging. There was quite a bit of discussion amoungst Mr B's cousins yesterday, so he has something to work on.

    Have a good day!
