Best laid plans...

Simon Mayo|06:13 UK time, Friday, 3 June 2011

Morning all, a sunny Friday here and a sunny Friday where you are I imagine. Looks like a lovely one for most of us. The weekend will be spent in the car driving to pick up child 1's stuff from University (but not child 1, he has things to do) and then driving back again. It is a joy and a privilege of course and I shall invest in some audiobooks to keep me company (no room for passengers of course). Might have chocolate halfway just to keep the spirits up.

(This mornings blog music:Neil Young at Massey Hall 1971 where he plays the Harvest stuff for the first time. It has some of the worst chat ever "Here's another I wrote about my ranch" but the songs are top notch. Me singing 'Old Man look at my life' etc at 6.15am is something my family respect me for.)

Well Mark K and I had great plans for today as it's the 10th anniversary show with guests, bells, whistles etc. Stephen Fry, Jason Isaacs, Michael Sheen, Paul Greengrass and David Morrissey were all lined up and ready to go. And then Andy Murray went and started playing decent tennis and got himself into the semifinals in Paris. Well done and all that Andy but really, some respect for the BBC's flagship film show would have been in order. He shimmies his way on court at 1.15 so we have moved to 12.00 and will squeeze in what we can. Which will be as much S. Fry as we can fit in and the odd review. We'll keep the rest for the 20th. Ho hum.

So that leaves the immovable, untouchable ALL REQUEST FRIDAY and all the calls, texts emails and tweets to inform the nation of your weekend hopes and plans. `choose your opening tune wisely, the ARF crown could be yours for the week.

Have a well supported and crease-free Friday, see you at 12 and/or 5.

It is indeed a lovely day; Mr T has threatened to barbeque tonight, of course, with Drivetime as a backdrop!

    Back later

Yes, the sun is out, the sky is blue, there's not a cloud to spoil the view. Weekend plans have been made (BBQ Saturday and then off to Worcester Sunday to watch a T20 match against Durham, complete with picnic, naturally!

So, to open ARF and guide me to ELH where the weekly shop awaits ....

    Morning all.

A beautiful morning here in Chetenham too.

I'd like to suggest YOU TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH by Meat Loaf as the opener for ARF. (all the references to "a hot summer night..." seem appropriate.)

    Morning Deebee and Deevs!

Now I know that I can post (had problems earlier)

PENCIL FULL OF LEAD - Paulo Nutini

    Good morning everyone.

Sorry to start with some sad news but I’ve had a message from the blogger formerly known as B&B and he has to take his leave of this here blog. It isn’t anything we’ve said, it’s just that work is getting in the way. He will maintain a presence on FB so anyone who wants to keep in touch can chat with him there.

Don’t know about you lot, but I’ll miss him.

    Catch you later.

  • Comment number 9.

Good morning Simon, Team, NYM and blogpoppets!

Beautiful day here again although the forecast is only for 24C ;-)

    ARFO for this week

Road to Nowhere - Talking Heads

Although I do hope Lord Ammo is actually on the road to somewhere and comes back again in time for the show!

And I for one am glad I don't have to choose between the tennis and Wittertainment so thank you for being so accommodating. I wish the person who arranged a meeting for 1pm could be quite as considerate!

The ARFO - not for me this week, but I'm guessing it'll be from the USofA.

Harry - have just refreshed and seen your news about our friend in the north. Sad - but it happens to all the best ones

    :(

  • Comment number 12.

Thanks Harry. That is sad news indeed. His interaction with you was great fun to witness. Shall be keeping in touch with Jim on the other side.

I am so excited at the thought of meeting Toots tomorrow.

Have said it before but the people who make this blog what it is (and I include Noisy in this little tribute) are fantabulosi!

Ok, I previewed and can see my "him" has been changed to "Jim" by spellcheck but I can't change it back. Jim is actually BandB!

Hi Simon and everyone on this very warm sunny morning.

..... would be a good start to the weekend, until I hand over the ARF crown later!

#11 Katy, not ALL the best ones ......... you're still here! :-)

  • Comment number 17.

Morning all, lovely day here in Oxford - and dentist avoided, so all is good in my world.

We are randomly having a curry tonight (considering it being the 'hottest' day of the year) - with some old friends who have had a very hard year with illness, bone marrow transplants, etc and finally can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I've got some spare Eurostar points with which we're sending them to Paris this summer for a much-needed break (the hotel is up to them, sadly!)

For a suitable ARFO I would like to request

'DANDY WARHOLS' and 'BOHEMIAN LIKE YOU' mainly as I remember when the friend who is coming tonight rushed in and said 'have you heard the great song by the 'Andy Warhols'...his ears had made a name association all of their own.

    Failing that, howabout

    'NOW I'M HERE' by QUEEN

As blatantly, by then, Lord Ammo will be in the Drivetime hotseat.

Enjoy your weekends everyone, I hope the rain forecast by the BBC on Sunday is a myth..

  • Comment number 18.

    Morning everyone,

What a glorious morning it is here - hope it is wherever you are.

First want to say a massive thanks to Simon for playing TWO of my suggestions yesterday - nearly fell off my seat when the second one came on!

At the risk of accusation of becoming a mensh-hound I do have an ARFO suggestion, brought on by the weather:

Sun hits the sky - Supergrass

    Have a fab Friday everyone,

    N x

  • Comment number 19.

Good morning Simon, Team, Andy the NYM and fellow blogpoppets!

Gorgeous here in London this morning. Mr P is unveiling the Ozpig again tonight so we will be filling SE London with the aroma of woodsmoke and chicken & bacon kebabs.

Apologies for absence yesterday. As Lord Ammo would say, life got in the way.

Sad news about B&B indeed. Will miss him. Harry, do tell him that he can return any time.

To usher in the ARF, please play:

WHAT IS LIFE - George Harrison

    Back in a bit.

    Alex-Girl

PS Love that Lord Ammo knows we have an ARFO crown!!

  • Comment number 20.

    My ARFO is:

JUNE IS BUSTIN' OUT ALL OVER from the CAROUSEL movie soundtrack.

    Or JUNEBUG by the B-52s

Or ODE TO BILLY JOE "It was the 3rd of June, another sleepy dusty delta day" by BOBBIE GENTRY

  • Comment number 21.

#19 I thought it was great, too Alex, about the ARFO crown!

It is sad about B&B; hopefully he will be able to pop in occasionally.

    PS Blog jumping already here!

  • Comment number 22.

#21, yes blog jumping for me too, and also the posting issue where it never seems to load properly after you press the "post comment" button, but when you refresh it has actually posted.

#23 Katy, you are a marvel.

Bruce Stringbean / Queen sweepstake (if we are having one):

    Queen - 2nd song

    Bruce - 5th song

I would also plump for Guns & Roses being played at some point - possibly Knockin' on Heaven's Door. Not sure why.............

  • Comment number 25.

None times for The Ramones or Joey Ramone.

    Shocking!

    Absolutely shameful. And shocking!

#24 Alex, I'm sure there'll be a hen party somewhere and, with breathtaking originality, someone will request Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Want to Have fun :-)

  • Comment number 27.

    Morning all.

Yes I heard the opening song yesterday ;)

So, as all good things come in threes, lets go for the hat trick....

Today Simon as an ARF opener and one that REALLY deserves an airing, could you please play.....

    *** TWILIGHT by ELO ***

Even the blog is nodding in agreement, boing boing.

Morning all, sorry to hear about B&B, hope its only a short term departure.

Had a word with Gazza last night, see he hasn't appeared yet!!!

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 28.

MCWs post made me smile. I wonder if Simon read that far down and took note of her 'stern' words!!

Great list Katy, can see one group in particular, still missing off it.

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 29.

Boing, boing, don't go to work yurt MTF, it's earlier than you think ;-)

#23 thanks Katy, I have been trying tO keep a list but don't always hear ARFO.

#19/21 thanks! I missed that in his post. Makes you wonder what else he knows about us ;-)

Think I need to do a MCW type text tonight to advise him of the mini blog meet in Dundee tomorrow. Do you think he would invite the world to that?

    X

  • Comment number 30.

Sorry to hear about B&B. I hope he can poop by occasionally, as others do (eg Spike)

#19 and #21 I didn't notice that! Must admit I tend to skim through Simon's blog in the morning as I'm usually in a bit of a rush, then read it through more carefully later.

#23 And every one a top tune. Although I don't see any Level 42 on there either. It would be lovely to hear SOMETHING ABOUT YOU one of these days...

#26 Surely not, Harry. How did you get so cynical so young... ;o)

    ~X~

  • Comment number 31.

#29 Mo, you should definitely do that! I think it's important for Simon to know how he is bringing people together through this lovely blog and helping friendships to form.

    ~X~

  • Comment number 32.

Phew thanks Mo. Love the word 'yurt!'

We're in the process here of transporting Child ones belongings back home. I think I may need another shed. (I have two already!)

Fabulous day, so off to potter amongst the peonies. First sweet peas are ready for the picking too. There's a smell you cant beat IMO.

    Fab Friday one and all.

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 33.

    Morning All,

    Suggest for the ARF

'You Make Me Feel Like Dancing' Leo Sayer

Hope B & B will pop when opportunity allows

#23 Great list Katy, think I have a compilation CD somewhere with that track list

    Have a good day everybody

  • Comment number 34.

MTF, loving "potter amongst the peonies". Bit like tiptoeing through the tulips. And I agree, the scent of sweet peas is a special one.

    Harry, you cynic!

Mo & Toots, hope you have a lovely time together tomorrow!

Just had a coffee with a chappie who works for the company I have an interview with on Tuesday. Really useful to get some background on the people I will be meeting but must admit, I am even more nervous now! I think competency based interviews are grand if you are the interviewer but not so good if you are on the other side of the table!

Did anyone hear CLP from Hay this morning? I heard the winning story for the Under 9 category and thought it was excellent! Really rather scary.

  • Comment number 35.

Is anyone watching This Morning today? Remember Foreigner who sang "I Want To Know What Love Is"? I haven't seen them for ages and they're singing live later in the programme!

The lovely Matt, from The Hub, is presenting today with Jenni Falconer and I think they make a nice team... and Matt has such gorgeous eyes too!!!

  • Comment number 36.

Can I wander through the weeds .....!?!?

    x

  • Comment number 37.

#25 Deevs, I've asked several times for 'Something To Believe In' by The Ramones but whoever chooses the ARF song ignored my requests, then seeing a list Katy made up a couple of weeks ago, made me realise the songs chosen all have a similarity or have been played several times before, so I changed my tack and went for one such song... and sure enough it was last Friday's ARF song!

It's a pity that some songs have been played three or four times, while other really good tunes never ever get selected!

Maybe for a change, Simon could occasionally make it a blogger's choice for ARF where we all have a vote from the suggestions listed and the most votes win... and maybe then The Ramones or ELO will get played!!! :o))

  • Comment number 38.

That's a good idea LuciesMum! Although my taste can't be "that" bad - when Chris was doing ARF I got picked 3 times!

    ;-)

  • Comment number 39.

"Yurt" does sound like a West Country word, MTF! to avoid getting on the wrong side of the IT peeps I blog from my iPad. Unfortunately I am not so good at typing on it LOL.

Can I have another go at ARFO?

    10CC Good Morning Judge

It's just been played on "shuffle"

Rampaging through the roses doesn't have the same poetic touch to it, does it

  • Comment number 40.

ELO have started at least two shows in the last fortnight. I reckon the bookies will get rich on any bets for ELO as an ARFO today! :-)

  • Comment number 47.

Ken, twice this week, so far!

    Blimey, its hot out there.

Mo, yurt rhymes with gert, another well used term down yer!

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 48.

#48 Two this week? Knew I'd heard them yesterday at the top of the show, and remembered hearing them some other time recently but didn't realise it was this week as well!

Odds reduced even further for today them. I reckon there's a subliminal message gonig out with each ELO play - Simon and/or producer quite like ELO but maybe don't like Twilight!

  • Comment number 49.

Sorry Billie, hope you dont mind me borrowing this.....

    WAH!!!!

Everybody must be out enjoying the sunshine. Those that don't have to work, that is :(

  • Comment number 53.

Oooh - was not expecting to be here - what a treat.

Shopping with Mumma. Had the option of going back to hers or staying here with sledgehammering. It is calm at present. They're skipfilling.

By the 'eck it's hot out there [made me feel a bit nauseous but that's my wonky thermostat] so glad to be back in my cool officy top kitchen.

So yeah - that list of ARFOs - agree Deevski, 'tis criminal that Ramones are missing. [I'm rather partial to the Foo Fighters but perhaps they are too current].

Another glaring omission is Britpop. Where are Blur, Oasis, Pulp, etc etc?

    Larking in the Lupins

  • Comment number 54.

I'm here Deebee! Just had lunch with a friend who became a Daddy for the first time 2 weeks ago. I have looked at photos, can tell you to the minute how long labour took, how many millilitres of formula vs breastmilk the baby is having and how the cat is adapting to the new arrival. I think I need a nap.

  • Comment number 55.

Very hot here too. Been like this for two whole days now so we'll soon be able to start complaining.

    Petting in the petunias

    Afternoon all.

    I'm here too Deebee!

    #54 sounds riveting Alex!

  • Comment number 58.

#54 LOL! Why is it that new parents always think everyone wants to know the minutest details of their baby's arrival? Just think yourself lucky he didn't dig out the video of the birth - I've heard of that happening before!

    ~X~

  • Comment number 59.

Alex ... I think a large gin would be much more beneficial than a nap ...!!

    ;-)

  • Comment number 60.

#58 The joy of iphones - I WAS shown the video. Ugh.

Harry, I think the sun has got to you my friend. All this "frolicking" and petting. I would stop there before you get near the orchid garden.

Re the ARFO list, no Beatles or Rolling Stones either. We could go on all day about who is not on the list!!

  • Comment number 61.

#60 hopefully you were shown the video after you had eaten your lunch, Alex?!

  • Comment number 62.

#60 Good point, Alex! After a cold shower I'm now celebate in the celandines :-)

  • Comment number 63.

Good ARFternoon Each! B and B, life can get in the way, but if you aint gonna be a regular, keep popping in when you can. You're always worth a gleg.

#11.Katy, I'M still here! Oh, hang on, I see what you mean. How foolish of me! ;0)

And, whilst we are at it, come back gazza, and stop it with your mardy strop. And yes, you can consider this a bo*****ing.

Ooh, I seem to have "got one on". Anyone else, come on, come on...! (Titters gently behind hand)

ARF! I wonder if the writing is already on the wall, and MTF is about to go into meltdown. The signs are there. However, just in case the lovely lady gets passed over again, can I ask for a bit of Dr Feelgood. I quite like the sound of 'Roxette'

  • Comment number 64.

    #56 Deevski

Song 2 - yup, I've requested that one. And Don't Look Back In Anger ... altho' What's The Story probs rocks more ..

I think the key to a successful choice is the rocking element. Anyone who gets to see Wittertainment 5Live can see that Mr Mayo would be riding an adrenaline high by the time he arrives at R2 studio - that sort of energy needs a quick fix.

It works for him. It's a cracking show the Friday one - like Christoff, Simon has a natural ebullience when in dialogue with the phoner inners.

    :^)

  • Comment number 65.

    Hell All,

Just a quick dip in today

#8 - Harry, that is sad news about BandB. Between you and BandB my musical horizons have expanded well beyond the...err, horizon.

#50 - Deebee, the loverlee Mr Isaacs is in this the newest The Radio Times. Youngest Boy didn't believe it was the same person as plays Lucius Malfoy. Said he didn't look bad enough, hahaha!

    Sees ya.

    A.

  • Comment number 66.

I was just thinking, what the reaction would be if 'Twilight' were to be the show opener, and the credit for its choice went to someone other than MTF. A tweet, maybe. And no, I haven't. I was tempted to put that particular cat amongst those pigeons, but even I am not that cruel.

    Mwuhahahahahaaa!!!

  • Comment number 67.

    Good Afternoon All,

I hope it's a good one for you all anyway, I have spent the day mostly asleep or dashing to the bathroom!

I am probably too late for the ARFO now (and it is lovely that Simon knows there is a crown :) ) But because I really enjoyed the recent Queen documentaries...

    RADIO GAGA - QUEEN

Hope everyone has a great weekend, I just want to get better really.

Hope to be in finer fettle next week.

#50 Yes, I've seen that Alice! He does seem to play 'baddies' most of the time, so it will be good to see him playing a detective for a change.

#67 Sorry to hear you're still poorly Zoe. Great choice of song.

For anyone interested in the tennis (and if you're planning to watch later, look away now), Nadal won the first set 6-4, and it's currently 5-5 in the second set.

#73 Thankfully, in the beginning of time, there were no such things as videos or iphones. I think the human race might have died out if there were. My friend (the father) has this proud but slightly bemused look on his face - bless him. he has already bought the baby an ipad...... I expect to be friends with her on FB imminently!

A meeting at 4pm then homeward bound. We have a second viewing on our house this afternoon - last time, she was there for an hour and a quarter. I fully expect her to be still at the house when I get home. I wonder what she likes for breakfast?

Good luck with the ARFO and the Queen/Bruce Sweep!

Will pop by over the weekend.

#53 Katy Mac... re Blur, Oasis etc missing from ARF list, last week I asked for Come On Feel The Noise by Oasis, because I love their version... but Simon played it by Slade.. still, mustn't grumble as I've worn the ARF crown all week and I have got it ready to hand over in less than an hour! :o))

Does anyone know what the midweek middle-aged mosh was on Wednesday. I was trying to work it out from the playlist and decided there didn't seem to be a usual contender that sat with the way that Matt usually announces them :-)
