Padded saddle please
Another early start after a late night of revision 'advice' and counselling. What a miserable time of year this is for exam takers/families of exam takers. We are experiencing our 2nd wave of academic angst with one more to come in a few years time. I am inclined to say it is more stressful for the families than those taking the exams, but child 2 might hit me with her Geography text book. More cake needed (and it would have to be the king of cakes. Those who suggested otherwise yesterday are wrong. A moist, ginger cake is still the lord of all it surveys).
2 shows today. This is because 5 Live have moved the movie show to allow them to wallow in the Scottish/Welsh/Northern Irish/local/referendum results as they come in on Friday. So today from 2 Mark and I will talk to Joe Wright the "Atonement" director who's new movie is an action thriller called "Hanna" and also "Chico and Rita" director Fernando Trueba. Plus assorted reviews as ever.
Then it's on the taxi bike to R2 for Drivetime and Nigel promises a lemon and mint pea risotto. Now this is my favourite risotto of all time so expectation is high. I suspect that risotto might be one of those dishes you grow in to. It feels healthy, it doesn't need chips and you only need a fork. That'll do.
And songs today please around the theme of NATURISM. Yes that's right. Edinburgh has said it's hosting another Naked Cycle Ride cycle in June as a "fun and peaceful protest against car culture". Quite why you have to be nude to protest against the car culture, I'm not sure. And what an uncomfortable nude sport that must be. But there is plenty to go at there I think.
Have an energised and stimulating Thursday, see you after 2 and 5.

Simon, my sympathies are with you - the elderGB is revising (or not) for his AS exams this month. His report came in yesterday, I'm encouraged (and I hope it's not misplaced) by the fact he knows he can improve by applying himself. I'm off for ring binders and dividers this afternoon. The youngerGB and I are trying to keep a low profile. The youngerGB has SATs next week but he seems quite chilled about them, as he should be.

Without technology.
Youngsters today seem to think they're the first to have to go through this kind of pressure and by all accounts in here, appear to 'take it out' on their families and loved ones. We'd be better off teaching them not to be so selfish.
By all means be supportive - make sure they have the tools and the space for study/revision - feed and water as necessary - then leave them to get on with it.
Give them the roots to grow and the wings to fly.

Yesterday she got her friend to change her FB password so that she can't access it. I think the difference is they are given their predicted grades and, in some cases, they seem to think that with little or no effort they will achieve these grades. Perhaps if they didn't know what they were predicted to achieve, they would work harder. After the GCSEs last year, the elderGB had 10 weeks holiday. I know that in some schools, the students move into their next school year a few weeks before the holidays so they have their timetable and are getting started on their courses. I think that is a far better use of their time, giving them about four weeks worth of tuition and also stuff to look at over the hols which would be a great help when they get back after the summer hols. If they don't get the grades required to study these subjects, alternatives can be sorted out during the holidays. I'm speaking as a parent and am in no way an academic expert.

It's a stage production along the lines of Grumpy Old Men - both feature some of my favourite people

AS levels? I understand completely. Unnecessary, unwieldy, badly planned. Surely they've phased them out by now? They have here.
My eldest and her contemporaries caught this as it was introduced. And whilst they were well drilled and fully accepted the nature of their privileged grammar school education etc. - ALL took a gap year before Uni - simply to get a break from the relentless exam taking. GCSE's, AS and then A levels. Three years on the bounce.
Despite that, I can't say that she ever transferred her anxieties towards us, her family.
I am guessing that all the emoting, squealing, dramatic OMG-ing occurred within her friendship group.

#86 - I'm familiar with the televised version of these shows - I have to say, I agree with a lot of what they say. The elderGB has two or three friendship groups; one group is the students who are naturally academic and don't seem to be putting in too much effort, a group of college music students who are naturally talented and, again, don't seem to have to put in too much effort, yet another group of friends who aren't academically gifted but who could be with more effort but they don't seem to put in the effort either. We have had several discussions about how he's doing, what he could be doing differently and how he's going to achieve this but the surge of motivation seems to be shortlived. I told him, the day he was born, he would be grounded 'til he was 25 and had passed all his law exams - I should've stuck to it, shouldn't I? ;)

What happened to rocking up at the polling station, having a chat with neighbours / fellow villagers you never see from one year's end to the next, a bit of banter with the candidates and their supporters, a lighthearted exchange with the lady at the desk handing out the papers followed by a gentle stroll home, admiring pretty gardens on the way.
