The power of the bean
Bleary-eyed, I am squinting at the screen this morning and clearly in need of coffee. (Goes away, makes coffee) Try again. No school run duties to perform, I can write earlier and without hassle. No chance of any family member seeing the light of day till Zoe's on at the very earliest and, in one case, Jeremy. But I always feel sleeping past midday is immoral in some strange way (Rebecca- the Protestant work ethic isn't dead!) so am quite happy to barge in, open the curtains and run away.
Made it to the football last night, only missing the first 5 minutes or so. A dismal result of course but a great experience nonetheless and I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Watching Gareth Bale in full flight against the worlds best defenders is a wonderful sight. And when he takes his top off at the end of the match, that too, so I am told, is a wonderful sight. You can see all the guys having a 'hold-your-stomach-in' moment, all at the same time.
The journey home (2 mile walk, 20 minute tube journey) was spent in the company of a full bag of mini-eggs. I have mentioned before that I am in thrall to these demonic sweets, but I managed to make it home with the whole bag intact. We might have lost the football but I won my battle with the eggs. Until Child 2 learnt of them, whereupon they were opened and disappeared within seconds. I only had 18. There is, as everyone knows, consolation in chocolate.
Which is just as well as Nigel today prepares Peruvian Chicken in Chilli and Chocolate. My guess is its more chilli than chocolate but I have been wrong before...
And today, let's do RECORD SHOP oldies. Or maybe RECORD STORE oldies.. Saturday is Record Store day... to quote from the founders...
"This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists across the globe make special appearances and performances." So lets thrill again to joys of records, record collections and record shops. You know you want to.
Have a constructive and forward-looking Thursday, see you after 5.
(I've asked Rebecca to book the same guests as yesterday but that might not happen. Glad you enjoyed the money news!)

A little late - but due to a visit from a QC, so have had to dust off my knees - and come back down to earth.
Bloomin cold here in Oxford, weather better cheer up next week, as I am holidaying at lovely Dartmouth!
I love old vinyl, not just for the moldy old smell of records (and some of my parents 78's were, actually mouldy) but also for the fantastic artwork on the cover - and having lyric sheets (big enough to read) freebies (ie a poster inside Wings's Venus and Mars) all in all, after parting with your pocket/Saturday job/Christmas money, you felt like you had something really tangible for your cash.
My suggestion would be
'YOU SPIN ME ROUND' (LIKE A RECORD BABY) by Dead or Alive -
or I think the sooper Thea Gilmore did an updated version, if you want to be more 'down with the kids' Mr M?
Anywho, off to complete my PDR now - as there is no paint drying in the locality that I can watch instead...

Driving into town today and listening the radio, Richard Madeley announced that he only recently found out that "Oh-Bla-Di Oh Bla-Da" was written by the Beatles. Chris Evans has his moments, too. A few weeks ago someone texted in and corrected him on the name of a golfer. The 'texter' was wrong but Chris Evans, instead of ignoring the comment, really made the poor guy look like an idiot; an incredible abuse of power.
I'm afraid I believe Radio2 should, primarily, be about music and the presenters should have a good knowledge popular music over the last 30+ years. I don't think the head of Radio2 feels the same about it; I think s/he sees it as 'entertainment' in a much broader sense which is why we get the likes of Richard Madeley, Chris Tarrant and Lisa Tarbuck.

I heard an interesting interview recently where somebody reminded us that at the time in the late 70s/early 80s, everybody dismissed ABBA as cheesy trashy pop. Nowadays, although they are clearly still in the "feelgood" category, people praise their musical composition, finely crafted melodies, technical brilliance etc

Richard Allinson stuck at crazy O'clock, Mark & Stuart shovelled off to 6 Records, Alan Carr and Norton destroying prime slots and the stand in DJ's are awful - Madeley, Zoe Ball, Liza Tarbuck. Only Tarrant brings a little life to the place. It's fast becoming Radio 1.5, and when will the powers that be realise that radio listeners on the whole do not want TV celebrities presenting shows on R2. If they are there to work off some of their vast salaries when they are not doing TV work, then that's just bad form. The BBC Trust appears to want entertainment for 'everyone'. Well, do that on TV, don't try and do that on radio, especially on R2. Just my opinion. Certain TV people can do a reasonable job on radio; Chris Evans and Dale Winton were DJ's for many years, even if you don't like their personal style. They can at least do a reasonable job. And I think that by rule, if you are going to present a show on a station like R2, you should be able to drive the desk, not gabble on about your kids and your famous wives/husbands whilst a producer picks the music and runs the bells and whistles. It's dumbing down for the 'celebrity dancing on ice in the big brother house in the jungle with the x-factor' community, and I don't like it.
End of rant.

ABBA didn't really really achieve their status until someone asked "how come people still love this after 20 years?" Then a musicologist or two looked at the composition and realised just how finely crafted the songs were. Most popular music doesn't get that kind of attention. Before ABBA, I think only the Beatles and Dylan were properly studied. Popular music is much more ephemeral and 'of the moment'; it's not supposed to be around for long. When it is, that's when people start attaching the 'classic' tag.

What about moving to other way; from radio to TV. A couple of people managed it succesfully (Noel Edmunds?). I wonder if TV personalities complain about radio DJs nicking their jobs? I think Adrian Childs did!

Hello!
I'm popping in from over the fence to ask you 'pretty please can you make us a cake and/or hat for the winner of our guess how many pages before Chris returns game'.
So far it's looking as though Jillygoat might be nearest with 7 pages, the rest of us being a bit optimistic.
I'll let you know the final result on Monday and would love one of your lovely cakes/hats.

I still think it should have been destroyed immediately, but as has been pointed out on more than one occasion, 'I know nootheeeng'

I must admit that I find Richard Madely extremely bland and I have not enjoyed his shows at all. I am not interested in his family (or Zoe Ball's for that matter) and his inane chat puts my teeth on edge. I recall that last time he sat in for Chris, he said that he would be playing a brand new song from Michael Jackson and guaranteed that it hadn't been heard before. He then played that Hollywood song which had been aired on every show for the past 2 weeks. Muppet.
In the main, I don't really care whether the DJ is a "celeb" or a seasoned radio DJ - I just want to be entertained. I find some of the R2 DJ's entertaining and others less so. I make judicial use of the off button as necessary.
And, by the way, I can't seem to get rid of the cat dribble................
