Brief shows
Ok, well the Osso Bucco turned out to be a slow-cooked stew after all. And the risotto was something else again. More top work from Nigel!
After the show last night I went round the corner to Radio 1 to congratulate Chris Moyles on breaking my 37 hour radio marathon record. While I was there the total raised was more than a million pounds - some achievement really. Chris was in slippers and in command, if somewhat baffled by the music he was having to play. "It all sounds the same," he said, which is the kind of thing your parents always said when you had the radio on. He was right, of course, and what a relief to jump in the car to listen to Alex Lester sitting in for Bob. That George Jones track he played was a corker. Anyway, Chris has now crashed through the 52 hours this morning so well done to all.
Cheltenham Festival this week has delivered some fine racing, some brilliant commentary, and the great John Hunt last night on the show. Today's Gold Cup means the movie show gets shifted to 12pm for an hour. Some have suggested that Mark and I try to go for the record next time and try to break 52 hours. There is NO CHANCE of that happening, none at all. I'd be asleep by 11 as normal. We mark Chris's achievement by doing a shorter show than normal.
Anyway, I'll have ample time to stroll round the A40 and get to Radio 2 and the All Request Friday. We need a wind-down-the-window-and-shout-along tune to kick it all off. Over to you. As ever.
Have a surprising and joyful Friday, see you after 5.

Good morning Everyone and, of course, Simon, The Team and the NYM,
Firstly - thank you so much for playing my request last night and for the mensh :) Humblest apologoes if it embarrasses you reading out my moniker, Simon, but I have it on good authority from the gawjus Alex~G that I should leave it as it is. I doubt it'll be a permanent feature, I'm sure it'll change as the mood takes me :) Anyhoo, I had to listen at a time more convenient as I was in the car with a friend (she had her car radio tuned to the local radio station, what's that all about???). We were off to see Frankenstein at the cinema - it was totally fabulous. I know Katy is going next week, did you say you're going next week too Tortie? You are in for such a treat. It was very moving and sad but there were some lighter moments too - fan-blimmin'-tastic. Twister from Lark Rise was in it and the girl from Small Island too. We're planning on going to see The Cherry Orchard with Zoe Wannamaker (she's in it, she's not coming with us) at the end of June.
Gazmondo - I missed ya - good to see you, however briefly.
Tortie - good to see you back again and I'm so glad you had a wonderful time. MTF is just so thoughtful and caring, isn't she? A lovely, lovely, lady.
I'm going to post this as it's taken me an age to catch up and type this so I reckon today's blog will be up and running now :s

Have any bloggers gone down the route of ripping their music collections to lossless format on a hard disk? It breaks my heart that my CDs just don't get listened to these days because it's more convenient to connect up the iPod or listen while doing stuff at the PC. So I've pretty much decided I'm going to do that. Have been playing with EAC for ripping and taken a look at Squeezeserver and Squeezeplayer as I think I'm going to end up investing in a Squeezebox.

I transferred about 50 of my rarer vinyl albums to CD a few years back and gave all my vinyl to my niece (my kids weren't interested). All my CDs have been ripped to mp3 and that's how I listen to music now. I sold most of my CDs to a market trader, I think I kept about 30 or 40 maximum. I haven't bought a CD in over 2 years; I just download now. I never really liked CDs anyway so I didn't feel the same loss. To my ears they lack the warmth of vinyl played on a decent system. And all those little scratches and crackles which had their own stories to tell just don't feature with CDs. I think I probably listen to more music now than I ever did so I don't feel I'm missing out.

Thank you very much.
Well done to Chris Moyles - even although I can't listen to R1 anymore!!! And Happy Red Nose Day!
A good, real, unrestrained, hearty laugh is a sort of glorified internal massage, performed rapidly and automatically. It manipulates and revitalizes corners and unexplored crannies of the system that are unresponsive to most other exercise methods. So says someone....no idea who said it, but at least it means we can laugh a lot today and no gym required!

My first record player was one of those where you could stack the vinyl and there was a little plastic arm which operated a switch to tell the machine that the record to be played was either a 45 or a 12”. Me and my first girlfriend discovered that, if you left the arm off, convincing the machine that a 45 was to be played, with Emerson Lake & Palmer’s first album, the needle would land just at the end of ‘Tank’ and so play ‘Lucky Man’ continuously for hours.
ELP’s eponymous first album is only vinyl I still own, it’s in a frame on the wall, but I know if I play it all the way through there is a little scratch between the last two tracks on side 2 which holds sweet memories.

Deebee, Many thanks for your kind first aid on my finget yesterday. It's still very sore but I'll live!
#55 Ken, I kid you not - Mr 39 (38 actually) still has 78s and several HMV gramaphones. We occasionally crank them up and the sound is just awesome.
Zoe UU, Do I know you ;-)

At 13:07 18th Mar 2011, Bear Texted Brian wrote:#74 Sometimes when I play a CD or listen online, I anticipate the point where the click or jump on my old vinyl copy would have been. It's nice to be able to put that vinyl onto a format such as an MP3 file or disc so that you can listen anywhere and still get those little inconsistencies, but it is the vinly album covers that are so nice - some I have with gatefold (!) sleeves still crackle like new when they did when they were bought in 1974. Also, however much you enjoy more modern formats, second hand albums bought back in the seventies from Cardiff market still bear the names of the people who had owned them before me. So however much I may enjoy listening to Robert Fripp's EXPOSURE album on an MP3, it doesn't bear the mystical name of one "Ruan Kimber" who owned it before me. I have a few of these - sometimes tempted to find them on Facebook, just to find out all these years later who they actually were... but never bothered. Sadly a leaking boiler a year or so ago leaked so impereptibly that half my albums were ruined before I knew there was a leak, including some rare spoken word albums from the sixties of Lawrence Durrell, Henry Miller and some Jack Kerouac, that will now never be listened to again my house...

I had an album (which I lent out and never got back) called It's About Time by Tonto's Expanding Head Band (an early synthesiser band). In the run-out someone had written:
"Have you ever thought what you seek for the sake of seeking yourself?"
Never quite understood what it meant! :-)
