Simon, Simon, Simon .... I'm with KatyMac - what are you thinking? Or are you being ironic and a bit tongue in cheek?



Take it easy young man. I'm sure Mrs Mayo and the Mini Mayos would rather have a slightly crooked Simon than a totally kyboshed one!



We took Nic's 8 year old to see Yogi Bear 3D last Saturday and I have to say it was 80 minutes of no-brainer fun. I'm not usually a fan of kiddie films but did enjoy Yogi's adventure. Yes, the plot was a bit thin on the ground, and 80 minutes seemed about right but on the whole it was OK. The best bit is watching the kids trying to touch the 3D effects in the cinema. They'll learn ....!

Hi KatyMac, I didn't see you :-) The statue on Main Street is of the Earl of Mayo, he used to MP here. It got demolished by a lorry back in the 60's but I don't suppose that made anyone's "traffic bulletin".

#22, Harry, I have a Kindle and while it is handy, it will never take the place of a real book. I have a copy of Frankestien that was used for A-Level English Lit. We were encourage to use highlighters and such like to mark the relevant passages but I just could bring myself to do it. Just didn't seem right!

#31 Hi Alice, I have a small shop in Cockermouth (only about 2000 books) and I sell mainly non-fiction. I don't really specialise but I do lilke to keep a good stock of art and architecture. Pretty much anything that might turn a small profit :-)

#36 mrs_moog, only joking! I really can't see anything replacing the pleasure of handling a good book; they will always be with us but I just hope that they don't become so scarce that future generations can't afford them. Kindles have their place but I really can't see how you can improve on the idea of a book by making it dependent on batteries. I have my niche and I'm happy in it.

I saw a recommendation on this here blog for The Help and scuttle straight to Amaz** to buy it but balked a bit when I saw the Kindle price. £6.49! but only £3.99 for the actual paperback. How does that work? I emailed Amazon to ask why and the reply I got back was that the price was set by the Manufacturer and will say so before the format box. Guess what? It didn't say that it was set by the manufacturer, although I have seen this on other books.

#44 Alice - I don't think eReaders will affect me a great deal. No matter how good they get can you imagine getting the same thrill from picking up and holding a Kindle compared with an Arthur Rackham illustrated Gimm's Fairy Tales? I know which I'd prefer to own. And, you can't re-sell an ebook! If looked after, a book is practically indestructable; have you ever tried burning one? With a little care a good book will give you, and your children (and your children's etc) much pleasure and if times are hard you can always sell it :-)

We had the kindle/book debate not so long ago. I have an ereader, bought to save my spare room from being taken over, but can't resist the smell, feel, touch of the real thing. Alice, I'm with you, couldn't possibly mark a book and as for turning the corner of the page down to mark my place!

#38 I wish I could say that I felt so passionate about actual books, but for me they take up space I don't have, and I can't have them on display because of my twin's obsession with paper tearing. I know many people do value having books though, and would never replace them with a Kindle (other E readers are available...) :)



#44 Yes, some Kindle prices do seem a bit steep, especially when you can buy some books so cheaply second-hand, or indeed RRP for paperbacks etc. But you pays your money and takes your choice, I suppose :/

I suppose he hasn't done himself many favours in recent years by announcing that he won't be signing any more autographs for fans (or E-Bay sellers!)



I heard Johnnie Walker interviewing Ringo Starr (might have been last year) and he has the most extraordinary accent these days!!

Ooh - yes, I've got Photograph and Sweet Sixteen on the pod actually. But not a full post-Beatles "Best Of" collection.



In Nov 2009 I arranged a blog meet for CLP Bloggers in Liverpool. 5 of us partook in a Beatles Taxi Tour and the guide/driver didn't have a decent word to say about Ringo because of how he's turned his back on Liverpool and been a (blue) meanie to his fans in recent years.



It's the only time I've been to Liverpool but absolutely loved it, and shall never forget the Sunday afternoon spent in The Cavern drinking beer and singing along to Beatles tunes with a guy on an accoustic geetar. He asked if I wanted to join him on stage and like a total muppet, I declined. Still kicking myself .....

Hello peeps - glad you all loved the idea of George's birthday. He was the loveliest man - didn't know him, but when I was very little his brother lived over our back wall, and he was seen fairly often visiting. When his brother got married we had all four Beatles over the back fence!! wHEN i WAS TEN WE MOVED HOUSE AND COINCIDENTALLY LIVED 100 YDS FROM gEORGES DAD (sorry about those caps!!) and George was a very regular visitor late at night in a little white open top Mercedes (early seventies). I knew his dad quite well as a teenager - he was always trying to buy my dog off me! George regularly seen in local newsagents buying his fags, and bumped into my brother in law literally in a local exhibition to mark George Formby's centenary! Yes - George always my favourite Fab, and sadly sadly missed, - not the gobby one, not the Veggie one or the Tank Engine one, just the gentle one with a beautiful face and soul and a lovely manner to him. And my - isn't his son like him!!??
