The weekend arriveth

Simon Mayo|08:52 UK time, Friday, 7 January 2011

Well we might be expecting 11 of Mr Celsius' degrees but the amount of rain hurtling down here means that we might not exactly be parading around in our spring wardrobes. Just yet. My Friday taxi bike ride will be a wet one I feel.

A two show Friday again! Off to 5 Live with a couple of reasonable guests. Colin Firth opens up proceedings with "The King's Speech", then it's Danny Boyle and his follow up to "Slumdog Millionaire", "127 Hours". Everyone is tipping "The King's Speech" for awards and it's easy to see why. Firth and Geoffrey Rush as his speech therapist are brilliant. It's a buddy movie really, it's just that one is the king and the other is a chippy Aussie (are there any other kind?).

Danny Boyle, as well as being a director and producer, is the artistic director of the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. It is quite likely the organisers are hoping for a little bit more of the "Slumdog" feel than the "127 Hours" feel. As you may well know it's about a man who chops his arm off to free himself from a boulder trapping him in a canyon. You might not think of it as a feelgood film but it is a great performance from James Franco and it is 'life-enhancing'. If also 'limb -reducing'.

Then it's the first ARF of the year! Hooray for the mighty ARF!

Choose your favourite opening song below. Go on, pick a belter.

Have a gentle and reassuring Friday, see you after 5. Or after 2. Or both.

If at first you dont succeed, then try, try and try again.

Then, try a bit more and then possibly a bit more....

My point being 2009 - tried. 2010 -tried.

So here we are in 2011, I guess theres only one thing for it, yup try again.

Dear Simon and the team, and nice young man that we met in the lift..

Could you please play *** Twilight *** by ELO.

    Morning All,

No ARF request from me as I have been very lucky this week with my 3 menshes!

Simon, that film about that poor man who fell down a crevice and got his arm trapped, it was great that he had a happy outcome, but I couldn't sit and watch him gradually cutting his arm off. Not my idea of fun. Looking forward to 'The King's Speech'.... Colin Firth is such a good actor as well as being so yummy!

Have a lovely weekend all, I have a busy day today, lots to do, people to see and places to go!

Hi Twisty - yes, we talked about the sad passing of Mick Karn earlier this week and a few of us requested Japan tracks. Gerry Rafferty's passing did rather grab the headlines, though ...

Just spotted your post about snow Simon.

I think its as far down as Staffs.

Heavy heavy rain here and quite mild.

Go carefully those of you with the dreadful white stuff.

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 28.

Good Morning Each! Simon, this may seem a little perverse, but bear with it. The delightful MTF has long requested 'Twilight' by ELO as her ARF, and has been singularly unsuccessful in her attempts. I want to to continue along the path that Drivetime has previously taken, and continue to ignore her. Not as cruel a request as it might seem.Poor old MTF is feeling a tad underwhelmed at the mo, and is going to withdraw her presence from this blog, apart from a weekly visit, which presumably will be with her traditional ARF. If you were to succumb, and play it, we would run the risk of losing her completely, and we wouldn't want that, now would we?

    Two solutions.

    1)Don't play MTF's ARF, until normal relationships have been resumed;

    or

2)RESUME NORMAL RELATIONSHIPS. This may require a bit of movement from each side of the rift, but hey, we don't want to take sides, and we don't want to lose either party.

Is this a high horse I find myself sitting upon? I'll get off it, and suggest my own ARF.

I considered choosing somethiong celebratory of Englands Ashes success, but I have an Australian customer and I will save my gloating for him. If he shows up, of course. Instead, would you give some consideration to playing...

    'RUBBER BISCUIT' by THE CHIPS.

  • Comment number 29.

    Paul, LOL!

I do have other songs to consider once Twilight has been played.

Good Luck with your Rubber Biscuit :)

    Back to it...

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

A friend of mine (the 'other' Mo) who's a bit of a film buff, went to see "127 Hours" yesterday. She survived.

Colin Firth - hmm... no, I'm not going to restart that debate. But as far as I'm concerned, he's all yours Mcw!

No ARF request from me today. I'm hoping to hand over the crown I received on Christmas Eve to another blogpoppet (MTF, perhaps?). Better make sure I've got rid of all the tinsel off it first... Plus Simon's already played my SRF this week.

#11 Simon W - I actually suggested that as an opener form Patrick Kielty's NYE ARF show. Then forgot to listen. I'm guessing it didn't get played...

    Deebee X

  • Comment number 31.

#17 I know what FNWC is (I "lurk" on the other side) but not FNMC LOL

  • Comment number 32.

Good morning Simon, Team, NYM and fellow blogpoppets!

Gerald the Lurgy has asked if I can move away from my usual Rosie related ARFs and request something to coomemorate all those musicians past and present who bring us the music that gives us so much pleasure. He did want John Miles but haschanged it to:

I'VE GOT THE MUSIC IN ME - Kiki Dee

    Laters

    Alex-Girl (and Gerald)

  • Comment number 33.

    Good Morning Everybody

    Good Morning Simon & Team

    Sorry I'm late.

Thank you for playing my song suggestions yesterday. Even so, may I be cheeky and make a request ?

    Please will you play

THE BEAT by The Look ?

It's a stomper of a song from the very first second and would make a brill opener.

#39 I'm not sure what the connection is, Mo?

I didn't mention any names - neither did AlexG!

  • Comment number 43.

    Morning All,

    What's all the fuss about?

Someone gave an opinion which others (myself included) disagreed with, and, as far as I could tell, last time I checked - the world continues to spin.

Life's too short - let's crack on shall we?

I am tempted to suggest something like the New Seekers - I'd like to teach the world to sing or Van Halen - Why Can't This be Love, in the spirit of harmony and all the things that these blogs should be, but can't bear to waste another opportunity to call the kids over to the radio at 17:05 with the promise that Daddy might get a mention and a song played - only to be brought back to the real world by one of them asking "who is Deebee/MCW/PSL/MTF/Billie Pepper (insert your own choice), is that you Daddy"

Anyway - My winning (Ahem!) choice is: Ocean Colour Scene - Riverboat Song.....Come on! Friday evenings have missed this since TFi Friday went missing.

Hope EVERYONE has a marvellous weekend

It has occurred to me that my choice of 'Rubber Biscuit' may not fit into FYM's definition of what an ARF should be. The case being thus, then perhaps...

    'Poison Ivy' by The Lambrettas

would be more suitable. In fact, if someone were to voice such an opinion, I would have to acquiesce to that view. Therefore, fine young man, production team, Simon and decision makers all, would you please play...

'POISON IVY' by THE LAMBRETTAS as the ARF opener.

    It would make me happy.

  • Comment number 48.

Last night MTF and I were chatting on FB, and we came up with the idea of a blog meet in Cambridge. A very fine city of culture, with it's historical sites, lots of places to eat, excellent shopping emporia, and some very nice near neighbours (myself and Mcw included!). If the weather was fair, we could even go punting. It's (reasonably) easy to get to - the A1 passes close by, there's a fast train service from London (and I believe from 'oop North' you can get down the East Coast line), and for those further afield, Stansted airport is only about half an hour away. I could probably put a couple of people up overnight, and maybe Chickster would be able to do the same, but there are also plenty of hotels and guest houses around. What do people think. Does that sound like a plan?

    Deebee X

(who is deliberately ignoring previous posts - you naughty lot!)

  • Comment number 49.

    Afternoon All.

Snow now stopped and is thawing out so interview should still go ahead at 4pm (it's on a building site, and no, it's not for a hod carrier position!)

Thanks for the good wishes Tortie. I shall give it my best shot (although after a call from another Agency this morning there's a better prospect around the corner - watch this space!)

Agree with Rips ref all the kerfuffle! Opinions are allowed. And should be voiced. Heaven knows, I've had enough "opinions" fired at me over the last few years over the fence, and have come out of it smiling and non-plussed.

Twisty - yes, soe of us did request Japan tracks t'other night. The passing of Mick Karn was very sad indeed as Japan were fab in their heyday.

And so onto my ARF ..... I could go for something trendy, something indie, or goth, but as it's Friday I feel the need for Glam Cheese.

Hold onto your hats for ....

    WIG WAM BAM - SWEET

Had a ball dancing to it on NYE with my Midland mate, and she's just as bonkers as my Suffolk mates, which is good!

#91 #92 Sorry you're feeling poorly Mcw. Is it today you're taking your GD back? Hope it goes well - it's emotional enough anyway, without adding the lurgy into the equation. But I'm pleased to hear Gerald's moving out of your gaff, Alex. He'd better not show his face around here - we've had quite enough coughs and sneezes thank you very much!

Alex, you have my sympathy re the muddy cat. The mutt rolled in something unspeakable this morning when Mr B took him out for a walk. I'm hoping when it's dried most of it will brush off, otherwise it's in the B A T H for him this afternoon (I have to spell it - he understands every word, you know...) I'm trying (not very successfully) to keep him off the furniture in the mean time.

It occured to me this morning that Simon hasn't written his column for the Telegraph for ages. I think the last one was just before his summer break. I wonder why he stopped - I used to enjoy reading them.

    Good Afternoon,

Enyoy the match, Gaz. What colour(s) is/are your scarf? I am a claret and blue girl myself.

Alex, glad to here your unwelcome house guest Gerald has finally started packing his bags.

    MCW/Brandon, Hope Gerald's relatives don't stay long...

Alison, Well done on your run! And now to "relax" you are hill climbing. What a superwoman!

Filthy black sky here but the sun is trying really hard to break through. Going to disappear now in order to try and locate the rainbow that must be out there somewhere.

    Have a good afternoon.x

Thanks everyone, for your kind wishes. The cold is not that bad, just annoying.

Deebee, she went back about an hour ago. I must admit that neither Mr Mcw or I fancied driving down to London, so a very nice man that usually takes Mr Mcw to airports, has taken her. She, infact, suggested him, I think she was ready to go back! So it is just Mr Mcw and I and the animals now.

The Garden Centre beckons.....we know how to live!
