Stay calm and carry on

Simon Mayo|08:57 UK time, Friday, 17 December 2010

Sounds like Band Aid on the radio. Haven't heard it for a while. Shops don't count obviously as they run their Christmas compilations from September but on the radio, it still sounds fine to me. I haven't played all these old Christmas songs for years and I'm loving it. Next week we have loads of singers and musicians in to play some good ol' festive tunes. Fisherman's Friends, Kate Rusby, Lauren Pritchard and Thea Gilmore will put you in a fine old mood. By the time we get to Christmas Eve we will have been serenaded into a state of seasonal bliss.

All this is assuming any of us can move next week. If the winter apocalypse descends all bets are off.

Nigel's 5 bird roast was a treat yesterday and his stuffing was quite delicious. Not quite convinced I would be as patient as you need to be to put bird 1 into bird 2 and so on. Or that my local butcher would do all the de-boning I would need to ask him to. All the information's on the website should you want more. And use the blog if you have any queries about Christmas food and drink you might have. Nigel will be on everyday next week at 5.20 so we have plenty of time to tackle most issues.

All request Friday coming down the tracks very fast! And next week it'll be an all request Christmas Eve! And guess what! We are going to do an all request Thursday as well! (too many exclamation marks I realise, sorry) So lots of great tune ideas please, can be festive can be non-festive, whatever you fancy really.

Child 1 returns from University today, doubtless starving and inevitably penniless, so we'll have a great Friday. Hope yours is a belter too, see you after 5.

Morning all, no ARF suggestion from me today. I have had my celebration moment for this week already.

I collected my GD from Bristol uni on Wednesday evening and I think she has superglued herself to her bed as she seems to be very reluctant to leave it!

We missed the Royal variety show last night, due to a terrible tv reception. Why does it always do that when there is something on that you want to watch. I have picked up one or two remarks over on fb about it and hope that I can watch it this evening maybe by the wonder of 'play again!'

Right then, off to shake the snow off the Christmas tree that has been outside since the weekend and get busy with some baubles.

Ho Ho Ho, here comes even more snow!

Morning all. New to posting so bear with me, my ARF request is Ragpickers Dream, Mark Knopfler. Beautiful Christmassy song and never, ever, ever, ever played on Radio 2!! So please Simon make a faithful listener happy this cold and snowy Friday. MWAH

  • Comment number 19.

After Simon's snowman joke, he is a little offering:

Scrooge was sitting in his office in the week before Christmas. He was

counting his money, making sure he had made enough profit for the year.

Suddenly, he became aware of a noise. It was one of those irritating

humming noises that once you've noticed it, you can't concentrate on

anything else. After some time trying to ignore it, he decided to

    investigate.

Scrooge looked all around and finally managed to pin-point the sound

coming from under his desk. Bending down to look under the desk, he was

surprised to see Jiminy Cricket, playing a tune. Scrooge crouched down,

and said "Jiminy! What are you doing?"

"I'm singing you a Christmas carol," Jiminy replied. "I've forgotten the

words so I was just humming it instead."

"That wouldn't be so bad," says Scrooge, "but, you're only humming the

first bar ... over and over again."

"Well," says Jiminy, "I guess that makes me a bar hum bug."

    ;-)

PS Hi DansNan, it may be cold outside but may I extend to you a warm welcome to this wonderful blog. You are right, Ragpickers Dream is fabulous and deserves more airtime, especially now.

    Good Afternoon,

Hello and welcome to DansNan. I am still quite new to this blog but they really are a lovely bunch of people. Is there a collective noun for Blogpoppets?

ARF - Hello Nice Young Man etc.... Please, please make the Mobile Tooth Fairy's dream come true. TWILIGHT BY ELO. When you do eventually play it I reckon there will be reports on News at Ten of a strange loud inexplicable cheering sound at 5.05 as all us Bloggers celebrate.

Are you still there Revster? Big Girl's nativity was lovely. It was called A Present for the Baby. Various presents were given in the hope of stopping the baby from crying including emeralds, dancers and the four enormous elephants. None worked - the only thing that stopped the baby from crying was a kiss from a little girl.

Just as an aside, Simon. Every week, MTF requests Twilight by ELO, and it never gets picked. Next week, if she were to make such a request on a Thursday, you could play it, and yet you would both maintain your respective records of not having played it for an ARF. It would have been played as an ART.

But then it snowed. And snowed. And snowed. And is snowing again.

When I went to bed (about 1AM), it wasn't snowing, and there was none on the ground. By the time I got up, we had 3-4 inches. Now we have 8-10 inches and still coming down heavily.

I have a seasonal HOMEWORK SUCKS question:

Why is it better to have a two-tier postage system with first and second class services? Busy weekend for me. I'm singing in my choir's Christmas concert tonight, then tomorrow afternoon we've got the church carol service. We don't have a church choir as such, but some of us get together and sing the harmonies in the carols.

And my GB arrives back from Uni today, and my Mum is arriving on Monday so the house has to be made tidy. And Mr B's getting the tree, and there's the decorations to be put up!

    Snow has arrived in Cambridgeshire/Hertfordshire.

Well, today could have gone better. There were a few flakes of the white stuff falling when I went to Royston for the rehearsal at half past 2 this afternoon. An hour later when we broke for a cuppa it was about 2 inches on the ground, and falling fast. Not a lot compared to what some areas have had, but I made the decision to cut my losses and come home - a journey of about 6 miles. It turned out to be the right choice as the roads were pretty bad, and I crawled home at not many miles an hour. Arrived, shut the door behind me and heaved a large sigh of relief - I'm very nervous about driving in snow and ice.

Then I remembered - Child 2 was in Cambridge, working (she has a weekend job in a boutique). So out into the snow I went again, and drove 8 miles in the other direction to pick her up - luckily her boss let her leave early.

The two of us are back home again safely now, and not intending to go ANYWHERE until the roads are cleared. Whenever that might be. I'm disappointed not to be able to sing in the concert, but such is life. I've heard from Mr B and Child 1 that they're in a hotel in Aylesbury, so please God they'll be able to make it home tomorrow.

So now I'm going to light a fire, pour myself a large glass of something alcoholic and settle down to watch the Strictly final. Every cloud...

To echo what Billie said - hope everyone is safely gathered in.

    #67 Hi Brandon

#66 Deebee - sorry it took so long to get back to you. We've got 7/8 inches of snow which fell in two lots, one Thurs. night one Fri.night. It is FREEZING! But we are not inconvenienced at all really. A good excuse to stay home. And it is truly beautiful to look at. The whole Island is white. Late morning/early afternoon we had a weather phenomenon - don't know what it's called - maybe a sea fret or a hoar or a haar - but the area between the ground and the sky became covered with a white mist. It was magical - like being in Brigadoon!

Now listen Miss D. Auntie Billie speaking. All of you are safe. You're just not all together yet. But you will be. Enjoy your tipple and concentrate on that.

We've put up our tree this afternoon/evening. It's not 11 foot, (Simon), more like 6, but it is a Nordman and it is FINE! We decorated it with baubles, bangles and bright shiny beads all in shades of gold while listening to CDs from the wonderful Annie Lennox and the incredibly talented Susan Boyle. Bliss.

Tonight we are having Alison from Eastleigh's fish pie supper. I'll play while that's in the oven and then we might watch some of a new DVD of Tim Minchin. Does anyone know who(m) I mean?

I hope everyone is safe and well, warm & as cosy as poss.

Billie, I saw Tim Minchin live last year. The man is a genius, almost a sort of antepodean Bill Bailey. So ******* rock, was the show, and I even bought the canvas bag. Did you know that his current project is a musical version of Roald Dahls 'Matilda'? There are a few clips here and there about the interweb thing.

#70 Thanks Billie! And sometime I'd love to compare Alison's fish pie with my own, which I got from my Mum, who got it from her Mum, who got it...etc, etc

I've just been out with the dog for a pre-bedtime walk. It's quite lovely out there now - it's stopped snowing and there's about 3 or 4 inches on the ground, and it's not too cold either. If the sun comes out tomorrow it will be really pretty. Quite glad that I don't have to go anywhere though - we'll have to see about the carol service, but if worst comes to worst they can do without me.

Night night all - keep safe and warm, and sweet dreams.

In a similar vein - although not specifically Christmassy - years ago my brother (who studied languages at Uni) had a French poetry book entitled 'Mot d'Heurs Gousses Rames. It included the following classic:

    Un petit d'un petit

    S'étonne aux Halles

    Un petit d'un petit

    Ah! degrés te fallent

    Indolent qui ne sort cesse

    Indolent qui ne se mène

    Qu'importe un petit d'un petit

    Tout Gai de Reguennes.

Say it out loud... and tell when you've got it

    ;o)

#77 Tell ME when you've got it.

I should by the way report that husband and son are now both safely gathered in. They arrived back about an hour ago.

Good Afternoon All. Hope everyone is well.

Deebee #78 Glad to hear Mr. & Son are safely with you.

    I didn't get your #77 DOH! Did get Paul's #76.!

From last night, #72 Paul - Tim Minchin. We discovered him by accident about 4 years ago on a R2 prog. which was introduced by Michael Parkinson. We hadn't intended to listen but loved it. We've heard him pop up several times on various things since including a R4 series with Mark Watson. Know he's been on Buzzcocks but never watched it.

We didn't know what he looked like until an article in The Times one Sat. (The same article mentioned Matilda.) Doesn't he just look amazing?

And what talent - he's mesmerising. I love the way you're sure he's being ironic but then you have this little niggling doubt. Very funny.

Our DVD is called "Ready For This?" recorded Live at The Apollo. We only watched 9 of the 18 because it was so exhausting! We already know the last track "White wine in the sun" which is stunning.

You are right, there is loads of footage on YT including his own Channel.

BTW, I loved the idea of putting Susan Boyle & Tim Minchin together in my post!

#71 Alison Hope all your plans turned out lovelyjubbly.

#72 Thank you Brandon, Kind Sir!

We're now going to make our first batch of mince pies, marzipan our cake and prep supper which is Stuffed Aubergines.

We're feeling rather festive. Hope everyone else is too.

    Love

    Hi All,

All my chooks have flown back to the roost. Infact, the two offspring were both home Thursday, but son went to Kings Lynn to see his girlfriend, and daughter wisely decided not to drive to the Peak District but go back to London (her halls are available over Christmas) and party with her friends. However, yesterdays blizzard meant that they spent an extra night at their respective destinations, and they both made it home this afternoon. The snow does look lovely, but I am sure that if it hangs around too long, I may tire of it pretty quickly. At the moment, the fridge is full, and, most importantly, we had our Christmas wine delivery from ELH yesterday, so I am intending on enjoying having the whole family home.

#77 Deebee, A nursery rhyme, methinks, about a chap who fell off a wall?

Take care all, and hopefully catch up tomorrow,

    Evening All again

I’ve not played tonight. Not ‘cos I’m too ill nor have had too much to drink, (Heaven Forfend!) but because we were doing KitchenyChristmassyThings while listening to Mr. O’Grady and then we just drifted into Alan Titchmarsh. And, do you know I’m not that fond - I think he can be very esoteric and can speak in a very condescending fashion - and he’s not even a proper DJ! And it’s prerecorded! But, tonight he hit the nail on the head with his wonderful selection. If you are so inclined, do the iThingy.

    We’re still listening to R2 - now it’s Brian D’arcey. (Spelling?)

We’re going to eat shortly and then prob. Tim Minchin again.

Please everyone ………….. Check TM out. You won’t be disappointed.

A PS to earlier posts. Apparently, 2009, there was an iThingy campaign to

make TM‘s “White Wine in the Sun” the Christmas No.1, but it lost out to “Rage against The Machine” and Joe McEldrey.

    SHUCKS!

    Hello All,

#82, Sounds a lovely day Alison.

#84 I was listening earlier Billie and enjoyed the tunes

Am a bit miffed at the moment, the supermarket delivery arranged some time ago for my elderly father and step mother for Saturday was postponed to Sunday and then today they said couldn't now deliver till after Christmas, obviously not much use, giving them some worry.

Sorry to sound off on here

    Thats dreadful Brandon.

Do they live far from you?

If so, do they have a good reliable neighbour that could help out?

  • Comment number 87.

#86 Thanks MTF, Its about 70 miles, not a problem am sure we will sort things out,

As they say the future may be bright, its certainly not going to be orange again.

To every story there is another side, had something to eat in my local cafe today and the wonderful people there offered to plate up some Christmas dinners to take up, all I can say is support your local shops, people that do really care
