Rock and a hard place. Take a cushion.

Simon Mayo|06:27 UK time, Friday, 10 September 2010

I've just remembered I'm off to see Muse tonight and I haven't a thing to wear. You see it's at Wembley stadium which makes it outdoors last time I checked and it's September. Do I take the travel rug? Will it embarrass my teenage son if I take a thermos? At what age do you stop moshing? These are all questions that will be pertinent tonight. Last time I went to a ROCK gig it was Kasabian and I ended up chatting to the only other guy I could see my age, who turned out to be the guitarist's dad. I have promised to behave myself but will take a book to read if I feel tired and need to sit down.

A quick 5 Live movie show for you this afternoon with Mark Kermode and director Joe Dante who did Gremlins. Then the bike beckons and we warm up with one of them there all-request-Fridays. You know the drill. Set the standard.

    Morning Simon. Morning All.

My ARF starter - again - is THE BEAT by The Look.

That Intro! Sure to get the weekend started!

Good Morning Each! And Eid Mubarak!

    Morning Simon and blogpoppets

An outdoor gig eh? Doesn't the roof at Wembley Stadium close these days Simon?

My advice is to enjoy it. Mosh away at your hearts' content, sing as loud as your DJ lungs will allow (good job it's ARF - the punters can do the talking for you!). Have a beer en route as the beer on sale will be vastly over-priced, and take some form of head wear to alleviate the eeejits who get their kicks from throwing liquid missiles into the crowd (assuming your down with the kids and not in a VIP suite!?!?!. I got hit by a flying plastic bottle at V recently and it REALLY hurt!

So, onto the business of ARF .....

    Supermassive Block Hole - Muse

    of course!

    Enjoy.

    Morning Simon and Morning All,

I can see your dilemma about what to wear, Simon. Yesterday was sunny and quite warm, today it's cold and wet. I think that Deevs advice is quite sound, and I can't really add any more.

ARF, today from me has to be this little belter:

    OLIVERS ARMY by ELVIS COSTELLO

Will dance around to that one whilst getting the house ready for a mass invasion of relatives this weekend!

    Mcw x

    Morning Simon and Blogpoppets

I think Deevs is right. In one of Richard Hammond's 'Engineering Connections' programmes he stood on the roof of Wembley Stadium and pulled the lever to close it. Still, it'll be nippy when you come out, so take something warm.

No ARF request for me today, as I've had two menshes this week. Ironic, in a week when I haven't been able to listen live to the show. And after I had the cheek to cast aspersions on our esteemed leader as a parent. Erroneously, as it turned out.

So I'll be putting my wholehearted support behind MTF's request. Whatever she decides to choose...

    Deebee X

    An ARF...

'Natural Born Bugie' by Humble Pie.

  • Comment number 7.

    Morning All,

Stick with 'Dignity' by Deacon Blue as my ARF suggestion

    Have a good day everybody

  • Comment number 8.

Morning all...think I should re-name ARF as SRF same request Friday...

Jackie Wilson 'the sweetest feeling' please

  • Comment number 9.

Morning Everyone and, of course, Simon and The Team

Enjoy yourself Simon - it's later than you think ;)

May poop by with an ARF opener in a bit. Off to have coffee with my wonderful girlie friends. Woo hoo! I love Fridays.

    GailyB :)

  • Comment number 10.

Morning Gaily. Missed you yesterday. Have you got a note?

Going back to what Deevs was saying, I get the impression Simon doen't really do VIP. He's much too 'normal 'for all that celeb stuff. And I'm sure his son would prefer to be in the crowd. Of course, he may prove me wrong...

  • Comment number 11.

Morning Simon, team and all poppets!

I was going to suggest "Come Rain or Come Shine" as the weather outside my window really can't seem to make up its mind, but I will spare you that suggestion.

    Instead:

    CRACKLIN' ROSIE - Neil Diamond

For a VERY patient kitten who sits in front of the radio every Friday at 5.05. AND she has a picture of our esteemed leader in her cat basket. Make a little kitty happy, Simon.....

    Alex-Girl

  • Comment number 12.

Hiya Gaily - missed you yesterday!

Hi Billy - will look out the book. I actually found it in a second hand shop so it might be out of print but I will pull it off the shelf over the weekend and post the details on here.

Mr P and I had a pedantic debate about the "Listen Again" feature. I was whooping over Deebee's mensh and said that she would have missed it as she can't listen at mo. Then again, I said, there is Listen Again. Mr P - how can you listen *again* when you haven't listened to it before? It's a good point. His suggestion is to rename it "Listen at a time that is different to the time it was first broadcast". Catchy. Not.

    Offski for a bit

    A-G

  • Comment number 13.

#12 LOL! I guess Mr P has a point. Although there may be people who are so chuffed to bits at hearing their name on the radio that they will listen to it again...and again...and again...

Not that I would ever do that. Obviously.

  • Comment number 14.

    Well, here we go again.

Dont Fridays come around quickly! This one in particular has come a bit too fast for my liking, as I have a trip to the dentist myself this morning and its going to hurt, i know it is!!

So here is my ARF .....

Simon and the team, would it be possible for you to play....

    *** Twilight *** by ELO.

It was lovely to here 'Hold on tight' yesterday, but it would be even nicer to hear twilight as it doesn't get much of an airing on the radio depsite being such a fabby song.

Right, just off to double check my appointment time, yikes!!

    Gloomy old morning here.

    Happy Friday to you all.

    Morning all

MTF - hope it doesn't hurt too much - lots of sympathy anyway!

One of my friends is going to see Muse tonight - give her a wave if you see her, Simon!

    Back later

    Tortie x

  • Comment number 16.

    #12 Alex Thanks for that.

#14 MTF - Gloomy old morning here too. I used to teach and one little boy aged about 7 wrote about a day like this wind and rain and grey sky. He called it "droopy". Now we always say "It's a droopy day".

    BP

  • Comment number 17.

#14 Good luck at the dentist, MTF. Trust me, I've had more than my fair share of dental work, including whilst away in Greece, and I can honestly say that these modern anaesthetics are bloomin' marvellous, didn't feel hardly anything. And wear your "I've been a brave girl" sticker with pride when you come out. You never know, Simon may even play that tune you keep talking about!!...now what was it called again??

    ;-) Mcw x

#16 BP love that, it is pretty droopy here as well, and I'm not just referring to the weather!

  • Comment number 18.

Billy - the book is "Those Were the Days", published 1929. No longer in print but you might be able to find a second hand edition. Try the South American River site.

    Franz Ferdinand - Matinee

  • Comment number 31.

So we need a real show-opener for ARF.

We need one with an brill. intro to get the weekend started.

May I suggest "THE BEAT" by The Look will fit the bill.

(I know. Posted this at #1. Just thought I'd try again.)

    BP

  • Comment number 32.

'it's a man's man's man's world' James Brown has an explosive intro....and may just fit the bill?

  • Comment number 33.

How about "The Spirit of Radio" by Rush for ARF.

As for Muse, don't forget the ear defenders but go for in-ear foam ones rather than the big headphone style type to save your sons sensibilities!

    Hi Si, Lo Blo!

    SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE - REM

  • Comment number 35.

    Hello you gorgeous blogpoppets,

Very droopy in Lincolnshire today - rain is hammering against the roof-lights as I type :(

ARF OPENER - PUMP IT UP, ELVIS COSTELLO AND THE ATTRACTIONS

Deebee - apologoes for my absence yesterday - the dog ate my note :( Truth be told, I was blimmin' busy with the building survey, downloading photies, answering phones, making tea... you know how it is. I did manage to lurk but as I didn't have a three worder nor a suitable song choice, I carried on at the grindstone.

MTF - glad the visit to the dentist went better than you'd feared. You'll have the most fabtastic weekend now, I'm sure.

Alex-G - good point, well made - the title is so catchy too.

Wishing you all a weasant pleekend (btw where is Malcolm? Anyone seen him of late?). It's not Goodwood yet is it?

Taking elderGB to the RAF careers office today to find out about a bursary for next school year. Have fun and play nicely whilst I'm gone.

Gotta go, the fish fingers are ready to be placed lovingly between two slices of wholemeal and mayonnaise. mmmm yum.

Toodle-oo and good luck - will be tuned in at 5.05 to hear EC ;)

Glad it all went well at the dentist MTF.

'pologies for late arrival today, but had to drop daughter at 'big school' for her first day, cue parents hanging around in class room as she runs off to sit by her friend and waves dismissively to us, as we say we're going!

Hello Webm - keep posting as after the first 5 or so are ok you won't be pre-modded.

Can I suggest The Call - Let the day begin for ARF.

Big day for you then Andy - if not for your daughter!

Okay, I'm boggling off home now. My brother will be here shortly to take over looking after Mum. I hope I'll get back before Drivetime starts, but you never know on a Friday afternoon. Good luck with those ARF requests!

Andy - I hope your GD has had a good first day.

  • Comment number 40.

Just had a wee read through yesterday's blog - well done all you menshees. Deebee - I didn't hear either your licit or illicit menshes, but well done anyhoo. And most definitely, a mensh, is a mensh. I heard your mensh Glenn, well done. GD - well done on your mensh. I had a fair few when I first started and I have to say there was a fair amount of dancing round the kitchen in celebration with the two GBs. For them the novelty has worn off and my dances of celebration are met with glares of incredulity from the elderGB.

I'm off now - going to rescue Bernie Bunny from his run. It's been nigh on torrential rain here this aft and the poor wee soul has taken refuge in his cocoon. Now the rain has eased a bit I think he should come back into the kitchen to dry off. Aw he's just so totally gorgeous, bedraggled or not.

    Cheery bye.

ARF opener this week Simon must be "Get It Up" by Chickenfoot.

    Cheers, have a great weekend.

    Evening all!

So sorry but I am really busy these days and get hardly any time to think, let alone blog! Anyway, I have a spare 5 minutes (that's inflation for you - a lunch hour used to be an hour!), so I thought I would poop by and see how you all were.

    Not enough time to check back on the postings, but can I suggest;

THE CULT - SHE SELLS SANCTUARY?

    Kind regards,

P.S. Off to TV Centre on Tuesday - my mate got 2 tickets for the recording of Later with Jools Holland and he wants me to go with him. Yee-har! I wonder who's appearing?

    Evening All

I'm back home now. My word, being a carer is tiring. I really take my hat off to people who do it on a permanent basis. I'm not sure I could - although I guess you rise to the occasion when needed. My Mum is no trouble at all, but I'm exhausted. Keep looking at the clock to see if it's bedtime yet. Thanks to Simon and his mate Mark K, who between them kept me going through my journey (with a nod to SW who filled in between 4 and 5). I just really wish 5 Live was on FM though - at times the reception was quite hard work on the ears.

Tortie - so sorry to hear you're not feeling well. I had an ear infection a couple of years ago. I had to attend a 2 day recruitment course at the time, which included interviewing "real" candidates (actually students who needed some practice at being interviewed) - no idea how I got through it.

Katy, I hope you heard me saying "Hello Katy Mac" out loud (in a "hello Jason Isaacs" kind of voice - if you listen to the 5 Live show you'll know what I mean) as I drove through your town, actually city.

Alex - love the idea of Kev wearing a "Drivetime Blogger" t-shirt. Kev - you should really do that! I'm quite glad you're not going the following week though. My Brandon Flowers obsessed friend would kill(ers) me if she knew I had a friend who was going the week he's on.

We're off to Proms in the Park this afternoon. Really excited! Although it's looking a bit grey at the moment. I'm having a bit of a wardrobe crisis actually. I don't want to wear jeans as if they get wet they are so uncomfortable. Leggings don't look right with the shoes I want to wear. I have an old pair of black cotton trousers - they may have to do. • Comment number 87.

Hope you are having a lovely time Deebee.

Paul, I feel your sorrow, maybe the sun will come out tomorrow?

    I've had a hectic day.

Took my lovely daughter up to move 'some' of her stuff into her new uni accomm, nice room, great views, 12 storeys up, lift... 'out of order!'

218 steps up and the same back down, strangely enough!

Then, as if that wasn't torture enough, Ikea, oh yes, on a Saturday too!

Decided a bit of respite was needed, so pooped along to a pub, where some of CLP bloggers, myself included, had a mini meet in April.

It was also tinged with sadness, as that was the last time we met up with one of the lovliest people that you could ever hope to meet.

Then, went on to the home of a housebound (ATM) CLP bloggerette, laden with home made preserves and mince pies, yes, mince pies!!

Finally hit the mammoth ELH, then the long drive home, absolutely knackered. The girls got glammed up for a night on the town, and my last taxi run is over and I have poured myself a very 'cold' one.

So, bottoms up, chin chin, whatever.

    Morning All

    Lovely sunny day here.

MTF, we have that delightful job to do next weekend. And there still seems to be a load of stuff to buy. Nothing like being organised (and my son is nothing like.....). Glad you managed to visit your friend (was it Debs? - not me, the other one.)

We had a fantastic time at Proms in the Park last night. The music was quite eclectic - from Jose Carreras to Bjorn Again to Brian May. The great thing about it was the atmosphere - it was lovely to see people smiling and dancing and enjoying themselves. And the community singing, led by the gawjus Gareth Malone, was quite moving. A guy near us was practically in tears after "You'll never walk alone"! Our son was thrilled to bits to see his hero, Brian May, in the flesh - albeit quite a distance away, but there were screens up so you could see what was going on on the stage. He came on with a female singer (whose name I've forgotten) and they did a few songs from 'Wicked' and then finished with 'We will rock you' and 'We are the champions'. At the very end of the evening there was an amazing firework display, whch was totally unexpected. I don't know if it was shown on the TV, but it was awesome!

I've wanted to go to the last night of the Proms ever since I was a little girl, and watched it on TV with my parents. So this was kind of the realisation of an ambition for me. I definitely want to go again next year!

MTF - yay to getting to see our now Bootless blogger! And hats off to you and yours for the stairs and Ikea on a Satuday.

We had a lovely time at Joseph. The main lead was meant to be Keith whatshisface who came second to Lee Mead on Any Dream Will Do, but we got his understudy instead and he was blimin' brilliant! It was my 6th time of seeing Joseph and every time I go, there's a new take on something or other and yesterday didn't disappoint. We also opted to leave the car and let the train take the strain which was fab and made the day out that little bit more special for Nic's ickle lad.

Today is a fairly relaxed affair here in ChezNic. The sun is out but we've had some rain. There's cricket and F1 on the tellybox (how diverse can you get?) and the slow cooker is about to be drafted into action with a lump of beef and some veggies for later.

Right, off to do nothing very much at all with my lovely geez.

    Laters.

You saw Barry Manilow, Deevs? Bet that was a good show. Our 'international star' was Neil Sedaka. I must admit I'm not a massive fan, but he put on a good performance and got everyone singing along to some of his hits (and doing the Peter Kay actions to 'Amarillo'!) We got chatting to a guy who said he'd been every year for the past 8 years!

I've uploaded some pics on Faceache, if anybody's interested. Unfortunately once it got dark it was impossible to take good shots (or at least not on my little digital camera) so most of them are from earlier in the evening.

Deebee - just has a peek at your pics - it looks like you had a great evening, but poor show on Sir Tel of Woganville - he wore that Tux last year too!!!

    ;-)

Yes, we had Bazza, which was my sole reason for going! Somewhere on my FB profile you will find me and MW,a! from CLP's blog in our best Lola garb - yellow feathers n'all!

Just reading back a bit, and it seems that some all round good entertainment has been served up to some of us. Such weekends are like little nuggets of gold amongst the humdrum, are they not.

Interesting to see that you have a bucket list, Deevs, I wonder what else might be on it. I have never really given much thought to drawing one up, but I think I will. And Proms In The Park, I think, will be on it. I doubt that I would have the stamina to wait however many years it is to get tickets to the actual last night at the R.A.H.

Another would be seeing Derby County at the new Wembley. I always swore that I would never go to Wembley unless it was to see the Rams in the FA Cup final. I gave up on waiting, though, and went to see them in the play-off final against Leic*ster. We lost, and had to endure a horrible trip back up the M1, roundly jeered most of the way. That's life, eh?

I get Sunday afternoons off, but on occasion I find that i have a little something to do in the shop when it is closed, and today was one of those days. It wasn't much, and I've done it between my last post and this, but whilst I was there, I listened to a bit of Jarvis on 6Music. It struck me, not for the first time, that there is a remarkable similarity between Jarvis' show and the one broadcast on R2 by Desmond Carrington. Is it just me?

    Hi Paul

Most of my Bucket List seems to involve alcohol .....!

A pint of Guinness in Dublin (pref at the factory where it's brewed)

A Singapore Sling at the bar of Raffles Hotel, Singapore (where it was invented)

I've managed to cross off a Mojito in the La Bodeguita Del Medio in Havana (it's spiritual home!)but plan to go back and do it again with Nic as Cuba was simply stunning!

And yes, seeing my beloved Arsenal win something at Wembley would be amazing, but I shan't be holding my breath!

    Time to Wii .....

Deevs, mojito's in Brizzle weren't that bad either eh?

How about a Scrumpy Jack in Zummerzet one day?

Glad things brightened up for you Paul. I listen to Desmond, at home, live from Perth when Mayo has signed off for the week. I quite like it because it signifies the start of the weekend, now that he has moved to another slot.

I dont get 6 music on my car radio cassette thingy I dont think?

Oh and its a Sunday so I'm not in the car either, doh!!

Off out for a meal 'en Famille' tonight, its been years since we last did that.

    Ciao for now.

Maybe next year we should have a blogpoppet meet at Prawns in the Pork...

I used to listen to Desmond Carrington when he was on on a Tuesday, on my way to choir practice. I like his laid back style - it's like sitting in your granny's front room, listening to stories of the old days.

A bucket list sounds a good idea - first though I will need to purchase a bucket... Actually, I haven't heard that expression before - what is it, a list of ambitions, things to do before you pop your clogs?
