Smile. Crinkle. Flash.

Simon Mayo|07:21 UK time, Friday, 14 May 2010

Here we are again at another weekend eve and another "All request Friday". But some work first. Work that we all secretly dread here at really rather popular Radio 2. Putting programmes together is great, selecting songs is great, reading confessions is great. Gettting photographed for the latest publicity shots can, however, be really rather stressful. Particularly if the Daily Telegraph recently described you as looking like 'a rather jauntily peeling beach hut'. Not that I'm paranoid you understand but pass that foundation factor 10 or whatever it's called.

After that it'll be straight upstairs for the movie reviews at 5 Live with the good Dr Kermode. He will however be at the Cannes film festival which he loathes so that is usually worth a laugh. Robin Hood will be top of the bill.

And finally to hot rockin' radio 2 (220 million listeners isn't it?) and your selection of fine, shouty anthems can be left below.

PS Zoom by Fat Larrys Band is not an opening song, never has been, never will be. Just saying.

Just remember how much Beach Huts go for in Southwold!!!! Say no more.

Friends round for dinner tonight so I shall be ARFing in the kitchen whilst knocking up my signature dish, lasagne, throwing together a garden salad and baking the garlic bread. All preceeded by smoked salmon and followed by cheese and biscuits. And wine. Well, it is Friday!

So, what will get me jumping around the kitchen with hyper-citement!?!?

ROCK & ROLL - LED ZEPPELIN

For now, it's off to the supermarcardo for moi!

Have a lovely weekend, Mcw x

    Morning Simon / All,

Doesn't ARF come round quickly these days?

    Anyway, my choice, as always, is;

    Salutations to you all.

I agree that the ARF does seem to come around very quickly in what seems like a very long week workwise,if that makes any sense!

Not so sure that my ARF is shouty, but its certainly fine.

It might be a little shouty with a bit of imagination.

    So here goes (again!)

    Twilight..... please Simon, by ELO.

Has anyone got better than what I am staring out at? Its absolutely pouring down here.

I have heard a rumour of a possible nice weekend. Please let it be right.

#9 - better outlook than rain? Well, our 8th floor office is overlooking Bournemouth beach, with the Isle of Wight to my left and the Purbecks to the right - quite sunny but a little hazy over the water, which is like amillpond at the moment....sorry! ;-)

#3 Oh yes, the famous Southwold beach huts. You need to take out a second mortgage for one of those, don't you? And there's about a 30 year waiting list. Oh, and where is it you live again, Deevs? That sounds like my perfect meal, I may be over later.

#9 The sun's shining here and I've had the roof down on my car for the first time in about 3 weeks.

Back from the supermarcardo and just delaying the inevitable putting it all away chore, and then the cleaning the house gig before the fun of the cooking commences.

Thought I'd "treat" myself to a muffin from The Golden Arches Restaurant (you know the one - clowning around!). Ordered it and then had to wait 15 minutes for it! I said to the girl behind the counter I could have cooked a full English brekkie in the time it took them to "cook" one muffin. At one point I thought they'd gone out to find a pig for the bacon ......

Southwold beach huts brings back childhood memories, had a relative that lived there and the whole family use to spend most of the summer holiday there and rented a beach hut, not a trendy place in those days some 35 years ago and the wind off the North Sea was a bit nippy.

A bit off topic, but can I just say congratulations to Graham Norton for getting the Saturday morning slot. I think he's done a splednid job filling in for Chris these past couple of weeks. I think we should rename Friday Tumbleweed day - it all seems to go a bit quiet once people have put up their ARF requests.

  • Comment number 26.

Good ARFternoon Each! Bit late today, but I'll still have a bash.

In a change of tictac (lol Deevs), I will not be requesting my usual Bonzo song. The form seems to suggest that what is required is an upbeat ditty that has been a success in the hit parade for some popular music combo of the past. And, although the form further suggests that the chosen ditty seems to be requested by some forum other than this blog, this blog nevertheless is where I make my stand.

With all of this in mind..

Simon, would you kindly consider starting tonights show with...

'Into The Valley' by The Skids. Thank you.

    Morning All

Another beautiful blue sky day here, a little chilly still though.

Paul- I think you are impersonating Severus Snape, played by the gawjus Alan Rickman.

Deebee- hope the choir gig goes well in Thaxted. Are you singing in that beautiful church that sits on the hill in the high street? We often go to the restaurant accross the road- very good there.

Gailyb- lovely to 'see' you here.

    Mcw x

  • Comment number 61.

#60 Yes we are singing in the church MCW, and we may end up going to the restaurant afterwards if it's not too late. If you're at a loose end tonight, you could always come along.... And I'm with you re Alan Rickman, although I slightly prefer Jason Isaacs who plays Lucius Malfoy. He looks better without the long white hair though.

I'm trying to download the podcast, but I keep getting "the website cannot display the page". Grr...

  • Comment number 62.

I return to try once more. If no-one is about, and no-one gets it within 5-10 minutes, I shall reveal myself. (Not like that, calm down madam!)

    "Ooh, yyess"

  • Comment number 63.

So, then. A hectic day in the shop, but one or two people, most noticeably 'less than fragrant' Bob, a motorcycling customer and nearish neighbour (name changed to protect the inno...xxx, guilty) managed to correctly identify that 'Ooh, yyess' was the frankly unmistakable voice of the late, great Deryck Guyler.

Despite the lack of success of my attempts on this blog to have any apparent success in my new impersonation/impressionist venture, I refuse to be put off. I think I have hit upon a winner, especially if I continue to only impersonate dead or out of favour celebrities. Nostalgia is the future, you know.

I am therefore pleased to present to you my latest dead celebrity impression...

    ((((( ! )))))

    ((((( ยก )))))

The beauty of this one over the last one, is that it works on the blog. Can you tell who it is?

  • Comment number 64.

Perhaps you should be aware that Mrs of Sheffield thinks that 'it works on the blog' is a misnomer, and in fact if it works anywhere at all, it is only in my head. However, I would point out that her judgement can hardly be considered sound, for obvious reasons.

P.S Do you want a clue to the above...You must be joking.

  • Comment number 65.

Of course, Paul, Deryk Guyler - that would've been my next guess!

Sorry, you've got me on this one - I don't think I made the time limit set anyway so wouldn't have gotten a prize even if I did get it right.

I'm going to have a go at guessing anyway.

It's not Victor Meldrew is it? No, no, I know who it is - it's my old maths teacher, Mr Gingles (the first 'G' is pronounced 'J' as in ginger and yes that is a real name and he was lovely - a very nice boy, reminded me of Larry Grayson actually). Anyway, is it Mr Gingles, 'You must be joking' was the catchphrase he used most often when I handed in my maths homework! So is it, is it him?

MCW - haven't seen you much lately - although I think we may be friends on FB - I still haven't got a handle on everyone's alternative names. Lovely to see you too tho'.

Spent a great day out at Wembley yesterday with Boy Wonder, watching Oxford return to the Football League after 4 years' absinthe. An entertaining game with great goals, nail-biting tension and a phenomenal amount of support for the U's. 33,000 Oxford fans to about 6,000 from York.

I've been out of work for a while now and was on the verge of getting a tad fed-up when I came across this video (apologies to Wombles, but when you watch it you will forgive me!)

I will never complain about anything again, except when KatyMac gets yet another 7 letter word just as I thought I'd caught up!
