Where's the beef?
As if you really needed to ask. It'll be with Nigel in the kitchen of course as he adds slices of bourguignon (is this right?) and conjures something wonderful to drive you mad on the way home. I know it can be a cruel torture to be stuck on a long drive, miles from any cooking facility, while we're tucking in gleefully in the studio. Today will be the same. Let the juices flow...
And we continue to amble through the timetable with art songs today. Not sure I can manage Brian and Michael but anything else take your fancy?
And Matt's Man Utd prediction was somewhat more accurate than Pauline's (as you might expect) so I think Pauline should set us a prediction for tonight just to even things up.
I shall now go and listen to a selection of country hits to close the show as Bob Harris looms through the Bourguignon haze...

Now then, my Charlie Drake story held over from yesterday (you are a patient lot of poppets)....I used to love playing one of my Dad's 78 rpm records by Charlie (can't remember the title) and at the end of side one he'd sign off with "see you on the other side" and I'd whisk the record up the long spindle of the gramophone, flip it over and re-set the stylus (anyone lost yet with the technical bits?) to enjoy side two.
Which I did one day, rather too abruptly, and snapped the thing in half.
I was gutted, and then frightened and as I was on school holiday I had all day to wait for Dad to come home to break the news.
Doesn't quite count as a Confession, as I owned up and Dad was fine about it. My Mum on the other hand flipped her lid!
If you know the record, please remind me of the title. I consoled myself by listening to Peter Ustinov's reading of Antoine de Saint-Exupery's The LIttle Prince as the tears rolled down my 7 year old cheeks....

SIMON, here is my CONFESSION
"It was the mid 1960's and I used to love playing one of my Dad's 78 rpm records by Charlie Drake. It was a family favourite and we all used to gather round the fire of a Winter evening and enjoy Charlie's chirrupy voice lifting us into a state of family jollity (no doubt we were eating Black Forest Pudding).
I can't remember the title of the record, but it may have been "My Boomerang Won't Come Back", which is somewhat apt as you will see. I looked forward to playing it whenever my parents went out as a special treat because, you see, I wasn't supposed to use the gramophone at all, as I was only 7 and neither the XBox nor Sky had yet been invented.
A brief diversion for your younger listeners goes as follows: 78 rpm records don't exist any more, because they are extremely brittle....
One day during the school holidays, I mischievously crept up to the sacred gramophone cabinet (oak veneer, 2 speakers, 4 legs, etc), selected the prized Charlie Drake record and carefully extracted it from its cardboard sleeve, delicately balanced it on the long spindle so it would just catch as intended.....and pressed the Autostart button.....
And I laughed all the way through, pops, hisses, crackles and all...it was a well loved family favourite, after all.
At the end of Side One of the 78rpm record Charlie would sign off with a chirrupy and avuncular "See you on the other side" and I'd whisk the record up the long spindle of the gramophone, flip it over and re-set the stylus (anyone lost yet with the technical bits?) to enjoy Side Two.
However, on this particular day I was keen to get to Side Two asap (that hadn't been invented either) and I raised the record rather too abruptly......and it caught on the spindly bit ....... and duly snapped in half.....
I was gutted, and then frightened - and as I was on school holiday I had all day to wait for Dad to come home to break the news.
I guess this doesn't quite count as a Confession, as I owned up and Dad was fine about it. My Mum on the other hand flipped her lid!
To this day, I cannot think of Charlie, look at a male swan, or the number 78 (does anyone else have this affliction?) without also thinking about the fact that I had robbed my family of our comedy moment.
So SIMON, please play "No Surprises" by Radiohead, as it has absolutely nothing to do with this story, nor with tonight's song theme.
Bless you one and all, Spike x"
