need to carefully consider the context in which their product will be used. A good example of this is bicycles. Mild steel may be the most suitable material for the frame of a BMX bike as it is relatively lightweight, stiff and durable. Steel is widely available and can be repaired, modified and reinforced if required.

Alternatively for performance cycling, carbon fibre offers a different set of properties. It has a better strength-to-weight ratio than steel, is extremely stiff and can be moulded into strong, shapes, and the frame parts, which are of various thicknesses, reinforce it where needed. However, carbon fibre requires a costly, time-consuming and highly skilled manufacturing process and can be very hard to repair if damaged.

The different context bicycles are used in affects the choice of material, as what will work well for one will not work for the other.
