Colin Montgomerie plays the second hole at Wentworth
Montgomerie chipped in for an eagle at the 12th

Colin Montgomerie stormed into a first round lead at the Volvo PGA Championship at Wentworth with an eight-under-par 64.

Montgomerie shrugged off his back injury to finish with two birdies, leaving him three shots clear of the field.

Scot Andrew Coltart, Zimbabwe's Mark McNulty, Dane Steen Tinning and late-starter Eduardo Romero all fired 67 for five under.

A host of players finished on four under including defending champion Andrew Oldcorn and Jose Maria Olazabal.

Meanwhile, Lee Westwood carded a two-under-par 70 and Nick Faldo went round in 71.

1825: Romero is relishing the late start and fires back-to-back birdies on 11 and 12 to reach four under.

1820: New Zealander Greg Turner cards a 68 to join the massed ranks on four under.

1805: Eduardo Romero is three under through 11 and threatening the top of the leaderboard.

1750: Justin Rose completes his round of 74 and Ian Woosnam comes home with a 73.

1740: Clarke takes three to get down from the back fringe on 18 for a wasteful par after a huge drive and a round of 70.

Jose Maria Olazabal makes birdie for a 68 at four under.

Angel Cabrera leaks a bogey at the last for a round of 70.

1735: Torrance takes a scrappy bogey six at 17 to slip back to one under.

1730: Olazabal launches a perfect drive down 18 but drills his three-wood second shot to the rough on the left of the green.

Clarke hits through the back, while the third member of the trio, Cabrera, found the bunker with his drive before pitching to 10 feet with his third.

1720: Harrington nudges it to the front fringe for three on 18 but ends with a bogey six and a four-over-par round of 76.

His playing partner, the defending champion Andrew Oldcorn, takes a par four to finish with a four-under-par 68.

Meanwhile, European number one Retief Goosen holes a three-footer for bogey on 18 and a round of 71 after losing his drive.

1717: Clarke (-2) and Olazabal (-3) birdie 17, while Cabrera makes an eagle to go to three under.

1715: Harrington's drive on 18 nestled on the lip of one of the fairway bunkers.

He choked down the grip on a three wood but topped it into the rough on the left.

Meanwhile, Goosen plays three off the tee on 18.

1705: Olazabal hits a driver and five iron to the front edge of the 571-yard 17th.

1705: Harrington makes double bogey after his out-of-bounds drive on the long 17th to drop back to three over.

The Irishman's playing partner Andrew Oldcorn safely makes his par to stay at four under and Retief Goosen lips out from three feet for a birdie to stay at two under.

1650: Olazabal squanders a 10-foot birdie putt on 16 to stay two under. Playing partner Cabrera three-putts for a bogie to slip back to one-under.

1648: Padraig Harrington (+1) is out of sorts and out of bounds on the left of the 17th before putting the second in the trees on the right.

Meanwhile, Sweden's Robert Karlsson eagles 17 to climb to four under.

1645: Oldcorn trundles along with another par at 15 to stay at four under.

Meanwhile, Goosen is put off his 20-foot birdie putt on 16 by a huge gust of wind. He leaves it inches short to stay at two under.

Elsewhere, Torrance bogies the short 14th to go back to two under.

1638: Olazabal is not at one with his putter and misses from six feet on the 15th to drop back to two under.

1625: Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance wields his broom handle putter to great effect with a birdie on 12 to reach three under.

1619: Darren Clarke leaves his birdie putt well short at the uphill par-three 14th.

Playing partner Olazabal makes his par to stay three under but Clarke slips back to one under after circling the cup.

The third member of the trio, Angel Cabrera, misses the green but holes a long putt for par to stay two under.

1610: As the wind increases, Oldcorn misses a 10-foot birdie putt on 14 which would have taken him into a share of second.

Meanwhile, Goosen goes through the back of the 14th and fails to get up and down to slip back to two under.

1605: Justin Rose makes birdie at the long 12th to claw his way back to three over after his earlier triple bogey.

1600: Goosen birdies 12 to go to three under, while playing partner Andrew Oldcorn also drains his putt to go back to four under.

1555: Darren Clarke holes a 12-foot birdie putt at 12 to go to two under.

Meanwhile, Olazabal recovers from a clumsy chip with a holed eight-footer to birdie 12 for three under.

1545: Defending champion Andrew Oldcorn takes a bogey at 12 after going out of bounds to slip back to three under.

1540: Padraig Harrington lips out on an eagle putt at the long 12th but makes his birdie to go to level par.

1535: European no.1 Retief Goosen birdies 11 to go to two under.

Meanwhile, Oldcorn drives six inches out of bounds on the 12th.

1530: Denmark's Steen Tinning birdies 16 and 17 to race to five under with one to play.

1525: Olazabal misses a nervous four-footer for birdie at the 11th to stay at two-under.

1520: Oldcorn is in fine form and secures a safe par at 11 after picking up another birdie for four under at the 10th.

1505: Oldcorn birdies the ninth to reach the turn in three under.

1500: Dane Steen Tinning goes through 15 in three under as France's Sebastien Delagrange finishes with a round of 70.

1455: Oldcorn goes to two-under through eight.

Olazabal bogies the eighth to drop back to two under.

1450: Olazabal safely pars the par-four seventh to stay at three under.

1445: Justin Rose takes another bogey at the fifth and is four over through seven holes.

1420: At the sixth, Olazabal sinks a 12-footer for his third birdie of the round.

1406: Justin Rose endures a nightmare third, taking a treble-bogey seven to slump to three over. Harrington, meanwhile, is beginning to find his rhythm and makes his first birdie at the sixth to move to one over.

1400: Diego Borrego pars the last to card a 68 and end his round tied for third.

1355: Olazabal makes his second birdie on the par-five fourth to go two under. Darren Clarke also birdies the hole but his reward is only to return to level par after bogeying the short second.

1348: McNulty finishes with a second straight birdie to card a 67 that leaves him tied for second on five under, three shots off the lead.

1343: Mark McNulty birdies the 17th to move to four under and a share of third place.

And Padraig Harrington is grateful to get a second successive par at the fourth, having bogeyed his opening two holes.

1335 The big names in the tournament are now all underway. Jose Maria Olazabal makes birdie at the second but playing partner Darren Clarke bogeys the same hole.

Ahead of them, Retief Goosen is level after two but only after a bogey-birdie opening.
