Furyk storms to victory
Tournament founder Jack Nicklaus congratulates emotional winner Jim Furyk
Jack Nicklaus congratulates champion Furyk

Jim Furyk fought back from a five-shot deficit on his way to a two-stroke victory at The Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio.

Furyk's final round was filled with fantastic shots, many from off the green on the back nine, as he charged past a star-studded leaderboard thanks to a seven-under-par 65.

"I started looking up at the leaderboard and realised it was a close race," Furyk said.

"I got from one down to three up. It was pretty exciting."

Tiger Woods watches as another putt slips by the hole
Woods did not have the best of weeks

Among his best shots were a pitch from the fringe for a birdie at the 12th and a blast out of a bunker for an eagle on the 15th.

Vijay Singh, the 1997 winner, David Peoples and John Cook could not catch Furyk's 14-under-par total of 274 - the lowest winning total here in five years.

Cook and Peoples finished two shots behind Furyk with Harrison Frazar, Singh, overnight leader Bob Tway, David Duval and Shigeki Maruyama a further stroke behind.

Tway bogeyed the first two holes of his round and never recovered as he finished with a 73.

Tiger Woods was bidding for his fourth win in a row in the tournament, but despite shooting his best round of the event, a six-under 66, he still finished eight shots off the pace.

Tournament host Jack Nicklaus fell away badly with a 79 to finish seven over par.
