Els led the Perth event by one stroke after the first round, four after the second and nine after Saturday's third round. Afterwards the South African said: "The way I'm playing now is some of the best golf I've ever played.
"The whole package is pretty good at the moment. This week everything went right. I had a great time. "The greens are soft, the wind stayed away all week and I could just go out there and attack the golf course." Two Australians, Stephen Leaney and Andre Stolz, were tied for second at 19-under 269 after final-round 66s. Five players, including defending champion Retief Goosen, were tied for fourth. Els broke the European Tour record in relation to par of 27-under 261, set by Jerry Anderson in 1984 at the Ebel European Masters/Swiss Open. Last month, Els shattered the USPGA Tour record for relation to par, finishing 31 under in his eight-stroke victory in the season-opening Mercedes Championships in Hawaii. The South African star shot 64s on Thursday and Saturday and 65 Friday. The Open champion spent last week in Bali after successfully defending his Heineken Classic title in Melbourne. He has four victories in his last five events and 10 since teaming up with Retief Goosen to win the World Cup in November 2001. |
