Gavin Coles, Skip Kendall and Dean Wilson are tied for second after going round in 66, while Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke is part of a group of eight two shots further back. Tiger Woods could only manage a 70 on his return to action after knee surgery. Woods had surgery in December and the 27-year-old American last played a competitive round in early December. His first tee shot on Thursday went straight into the crowd. Woods' recovery was a sliced three-wood into the thick rough surrounding the green, but after a wedge and two putts he walked away with a par.
He again drove into the rough at the second and had to settle for another par. Woods bogeyed the fourth before bouncing back in style with birdies at the fifth and eighth. Rain then started to fall and play was called off for the day after he reached the turn at one-under-par. When he re-started his round on Friday he struggled to get his game going and he will begin the second round five shots off the pace. |
